We were a couple looking to get away from it all, relax, perhaps make some new friends, and enjoy some fantastic diving. Our vacation was all that and more.
Fatboys is a small group of waterfront bungalows all with beautiful views of Kolombungara and Kennedy Islands. The accommodations are rustic but very clean and given beautiful floral touches by the cleaning staff daily. We stayed in the "honeymoon" bungalow and could not have been happier. The hot water was not working great but this did not bother us at all - the weather was so warm (29 - 30 deg celsius) we welcomed the cool shower.
The meals were delicious - plenty of fresh seafood and fruit - and all served in the restaurant/bar that distinguishes Fatboys sitting at the end of a pier. From the restaurant all you need do is look over the railing to see moray eels, clownfish, moorish idols, giant clams and occasional reef sharks. Needless to say the snorkelling around Fatboys is terrific.
The diving we did was with Dive Gizo. It's a great company and the dive guides were excellent. They'll take your gear when you arrive and look after it for the length of your stay. Just always double check your gear is on the boat each day (you won't need a wetsuit the water is so warm). Our favourite dive was Yellow Corner where we had a dozen pygmy manta's playing above us for the entire 45mins. Also don't miss the wreck of the Toa Maru.
Every one of the staff at Fatboys are simply wonderful. The caretakers John and Karen made sure we had the best time possible. We were also fortunate enough to be there when the owner Dan Kennedy was visiting and he and his family are the very best of hosts. Our trip was made extra special by everyone we met at Fatboys.
A few other things that we'd recommend in the area - kayak around the island Fatboys is on (2 hours or so), go to the markets in Gizo, checkout the amazing wood carvings and enjoy a SolBrew in the bar at the Gizo Hotel. If you are looking for gifts - a little shop tuck away opposite Dive Gizo has some great woodwork and shell necklaces. A new bar The Waterfront is out the back.
Or you could just lounge at Fatboys enjoying the amazing views and cool breeze - it really is a slice of paradise.
