“Comfortable but small rooms in a large complex”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2011

We stayed in an ensuite double, which was attractively decorated but very small and quite expensive. I think most hostels/motels are rather expensive in the town. There is a bar and restaurant on site. The complex is large and attracts coach loads of young back-packers so don't expect to be able to get anywhere near the communal kitchen or the hot tub in the evening. This is a pain as the restaurants in town are a bit overpriced for what you get.

Rainforest Retreat is a backpackers - or is it a motel - or is it an upmarket treehouse retreat? Here is the problem; its a busy, noisy establishment that doesn't seem to know what it wants to be; it certainly isn't a quiet, restful "retreat". As an example of how busy it is, there are 3 receptionists on the front desk at 4pm checking people in. We stayed in a motel room; it was small and noisy, when the backpackers part had quietened down at about 11pm, then the upstairs people were tap dancing on the ceiling and people were walking up and down the stairs outside our room from about 6am. There must be better places to stay in Franz Josef; we were in New Zealand for 4 weeks staying in a variety of places and this was easily the most disappointing.
No surprise - they charge for wireless internet.

Maybe if I was 25 years younger it would not bother me that there were 3 pubic hairs in the shower recess on our arrival, that our balcony looked straight into the bedrooms of younger people from a coach tour, lights on the hotplates in the kitchenette did not work and at times I could not tell if they were high or low, off or on. There appeared to have been a beverage splashed over one wall and had dried on.Not enough parking. The laundry was filthy. No matter what your age no-one needs other peoples pubes.

Stayed in the tree house. The family loved it. Excellent house on secluded part of the site, surrounded by trees. Spacious property with all mod-cons. Site is close to centre of Frans Josef. On-site pub/restaurant provided good value food and drink.

I booked a tree house and it was more like a log house in a bit of native bush. Definitely not a tree house and very basic facilities for the price. We had much better 2 bedroom accommodation In queenstown for the same price.

We stayed in the Rainforest Retreat for 2 nights in November 2010, while we were in town for the Glacier climb. We had a motel unit (there are hostel and lodge rooms available). Although the room was fine, it was the smallest of all the motel rooms we stayed in on our trip. The location was good, just a few minutes walk from the shops and Glacier Hike centre. The room was clean. There was a small fridge, but no hob or microwave. You used the bathroom sink to fill the kettle, though the sink was a bit small for the job really! The shower was OK. The TV signal was good, and there was a DVD player. The bed was comfortable. We got extra pillows and a hairdryer from reception. There was cheap internet access at reception, and the onsite bar / restaurant was good (especially during happy hour!).

Stayed here for 2 nights while I was in Franz Josef. We stayed in a Tree Lodge & it was lovely! Large and spacious for 2 people with nice modern fixture & fittings. It was also quiet secluded and private which I liked, but at the same time very close to town. We also had a balcony where you could have breakfast.

The Glacier Hot Pools are just across the road, so very handy. We didn't eat in the restaurant but had a few drinks in the bar and it was very lively and good fun!
