“Not my favorite, too cold!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2014

I ended up at this hostel because it's where the Kiwi bus goes, but I imagine the other hostels in the town might be better. For the most part, this one is fine- good location, fun bar with competitions and prizes (and all you can eat pizza nights), and a big kitchen. However, my main complaint was that I freezing all the time! The rooms managed to hold heat ok, but the hallways were so cold always, and this was only just going into winter. The door to the outside was usually open, and I dreaded having to leave the room to use the bathroom because of the cold. Also, I just don't really like hostels where you have to go outside to get to the other facilities (kitchen, laundry, etc.) when it's in a location with a chillier climate. Also, no alcohol of your own, and they DO check the rooms and do multiple sweeps at night.

My positive comments though are that the reception staff was super friendly and helpful, and there is an adorable and very cuddly cat on the premises who will happily curl up on the couch with you for ages. :-)

Hi Maria
Many thanks for reviewing your stay with us at the Rainforest Backpackers. Firstly thank you for your fantastic and positive comments about our staff. I have passed your praise on to them. I have noted your comments about the hallway being cold. I have already instructed our builder to ensure the doors can't be left open to keep the warmth in and I have purchased some additional heaters for the corridor.
Kind Regards
Oscar Morgan

Kitchen was great, plenty of room! We were in dorms which were fine. The shared showers for this weren't hot though which was a shame. The staff are lovely. I think the managers name is George and he is awesome. The Pizza night is good fun and you can iterally have as much as you like. Love the bar set up and the big fires, so cosey especially seen as it did rain the whole time we were there. Hot tub was good, could have been a bit warmer though. Lovely hostel. Would return if i was coming back.

Myself and my partner stayed in one of the private cabins here in March and were more than impressed with our stay. The facilities were spotless and it was all very modern and new, the location is beautiful and a really convenient spot in the centre of town with only a few minutes walking to all of the bars and shops. The staff were also very attentive and helpful during our stay, they ensured we had everything we needed and also recommended some lovely local walks. I would advise any family or friends to stay here as we enjoyed ourselves so much here!

We've stayed in the hotel before, but this time opted for a unique and secluded room in the "Gecko Village". Bathroom was really tiny but the comfy bed & the private spa made up for it. Very friendly & helpful staff and rooms were in a good, clean condition. Will be back! The pizza at the Monsoon Bar is the best!

Room Tip: The Gecko village is quiet and peaceful and has everything you need.

Really nicely laid out grounds and accommodation options. We stayed 3 nights in a tree hut. Although I had imagined it was higher up in the bush it was still really nice with native fauna surrounding it. Was handy to main street and great to have Monsoon restaurant on site as well. Even got to see a cheeky Kea who was up early making his presence known.
Will definitely be coming back to this spot.

We arrived in Franz Josef on a rainy day but nice day. We checked in and hotel staff was not only friendly but advised us that we were being given a free upgrade on our room. Parking was free and open (someone hit our rental and didn't notify us, but we had insurance so no big deal).

The room was extremely large, bed comfy and clean and although the shower was only a stand up, it was fine for us.

There is no free wifi, but its only $4 a day, so not really a big deal.

The hotel is in a gorgeous setting, but we noticed that it gets sort of loud at night. We were on vacation so we didn't mind but this may bother older couples or families with children. They had a hot tub on site but we didn't use it. There is also a restaurant/bar on the property that seemed to be packed each night. We tended to venture elsewhere so not sure how the food is there.

The hotel is close to town so you can park your car and walk around to the various restaurants and shops.

Spent 3 nights in the campervan section of the park, tucked away in a native forest nook - found the experience very relaxing. Great service from the staff in the reception, clean amenities and delicious food at the restaurant (meals might be just a bit on the too big side!).
Easy walk to town and a short drive to the Franz Josef Glacier - only about a half hour drive to Fox Glacier. Would recommend the place to anyone.
