“Great, but should be better for the money.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2008

The Retreat part of the site was lovely, and our lodge was gorgeous, though let down slightly by the hole in the top bedcover. However, while moving the car parking away from the lodges to maintain a sense of retreat sounds like a great idea in theory, trying to cart luggage down a gravel path (ie you can't use the wheels), through overhanging foliage, in the inevitable rain, isn't particularly practical.

For the price ($199 per night), I would have expected free use of the spa and sauna, but we had to pay for these facilities, as we did for web access. It's also worth noting that the on-site "restaurant" is actually a bar, and appears to be targetted mostly at the back-packer population. This means great value for money on the one hand, but on the other hand, our clothes stuck to the tables, so the hygiene didn't appear to be the best.

  • Liked — unusual location of tree lodges
  • Disliked — value for money - the lodges are pricey and you get nothing but location for it

Booked to stay at rainforest on our bus tour. We were told it would be around $55 for a double but it ended up being $65 for a small shed with a bed in it. Better off booking elsewhere if you want doubles.

The Rainforest Retreat really does have an accommodation option for everyone. There are RV facilities, dorm like rooms, and individual bungalows. We were fortunate enough to stay in one of the bungalows. There are two bungalows back to back similar to a duplex; each with its own deck with views of the rainforest and mountains. The room was a good size with a kitchenette and nice sized bathroom. There is a restaurant and bar on-site, but the main strip is within walking distance so we decided to go elsewhere. Other amenities ons-site include a hot tub, laundry, and small grocery connected to front desk area.

We stayed in a treehouse. The room was newer. The toilet was so cold for the entire two night stay that you couldn't even sit on it! We paid 200 to stay, and we pulled up and they were having a special rate for 150. My husband went in, and they would not match the price. The whole point in booking ahead is to get the best rates??? The shower has no door and so water poured out over the entire bathroom after every shower. Beers were over priced at their bar. This is another Kiwi Express stop, so if you are looking for romance, go somewhere else. We would not stay here again.

This accomodation was our biggest disapointment in our 2 weeks of budget hotel, motel, holiday park stays... It was loud, crowded and unclean. The word 'retreat' is a bit of a farce unless you stay in one of the overpriced 'treehouses' (that aren't actually treehouses), the website is quite deceiving. This was far overpriced at $163 for a basic family room and overated. We did speak to the management and received a small discount due to the unkeptness of the room.

We booked to stay in the Treehouse 6 months before our stay - we arrived to find they had doubled booked, which was bad enough, but then they tried to blame us, then the manager blamed her staff. We got no real apology, we booked into 50 On Cron (which we would recommend) but left Rainforest Retreat feeling hugely disappointed in the why they handled their error. After writing to complain, I had even had the courtesy of a reply - My advice. Stay Away.

I can see there are mixed reviews, which I expect reflects the mixed types of accommodation. We can only review what we had.

The Rainforest Retreat is a fair-sized complex. There looks to be a wide range of accommodation options, from backpackers up. It has its own eating and drinking places, which we didn't sample, but is only a very short stroll into town if you prefer that (which we did).

We'd booked the Tree House. It sleeps up to 7 but we were only 3 and still had it to ourselves. It was gorgeous. A spacious, comfortable, welcoming, totally quiet and private lodge in among the trees, separate from the rest of the Retreat's facilities. Couldn't recommend it highly enough. Only wished we'd been staying more than one night.
