We were 3 couples and stayed in one tree lodge and two tree huts. I stayed in the tree lodge and the room was beautiful and roomy with a well stocked kitchen. My main complaint is that the WiFi did not work well and sometimes not at all. The front staff were friendly and helpful, but one of the other couples couldn't get a problem fixed in their room and we stayed for 3 nights.

Room Tip: I can only recommend the tree lodge since that is where I stayed.

Average room, decent bar/restaurant on the grounds, terrible water pressure. Seems that we paid more for the facilities than for the quality of the room and internet wasn't even included. We stayed in one of the "motel" rooms and could hear noise all night: the gravel crunching outside, the folks in the room above us, the TV in the room next to us, and the people in the parking lot. The cabins were more expensive but also looked nicer and could have been quieter.

Room Tip: Don't pick a motel room.

The room was comfortable, but would have been more suited to 4 beds rather than 5. Make sure all your electric items are well charged before you come here...there were just 2 power points in the room. The kitchen was large, but not particularly well equipped. Many of the electric hobs did not work, and the gas one's did, but you needed a lighter to light them and nothing was provided, so if you smoke it's a huge advantage here! There is also a lack of bowls if you like to have cereal for breakfast!!! This is also one of those hostels where you need to bring your own tea, coffee, salt and pepper!! It was generally clean and tidy though and had a good atmosphere. I would think about staying here if I passed through Franz Josef again.

We had a nice stay at the hostel, the location is great and very scenic. However the kitchen was dirty and lacking in facilities. I mean there were 3 bowls and 2 frying pans for the whole hostel... not good. Other than that i would recommend

It was late when we arrived at The Rainforest Retreat. The check in was easy and helpfull staff.
This large campsite has 56 gravel sites for Campervans, as well as Cottages, a Lodge and a Motel. It has an on site Bar, Restaurant, camp kitchen, TV lounge and toilets and showers. For the amount of campers on the site there were not enough Toilets and Showers (the men’s were in a porta-cabin) and the Kitchens were very busy, as was the Hot Tub. Also, this sounds daft, but the campsite is, as its name states in the rainforest, and the rainforest is very cold, so the campsite was cold. I did not really like it, but cannot tell you why!

This is a mixed standards place with Hostel, Hotel and apartment accomodation set in large foresty grounds. The location is fantastic with a real sense of the rainforest around you. The rooms were comfortable, ample and clean with good kitchen facilities. Beds were comfortable and made for a good night's sleep. Fantastic, attentive and friendly service at reception which was sadly lacking in the Monsoon bar. Mixed drinks had so little alcohol in them my friend thought I was having him on and had just brought him a coke. Kitchen (as is standard in most NZ) closes at 9pm. Breakfast was good quality but limited to cereal, toast, juice and hot drinks.
There are also plenty of washing/drying facilities and plenty of parking. They have hot tubs which cost $3 per person. In all a good place to stay.
