“Amazing Hospitality!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2010

My wife & I stayed at the Alpine Glacier Motel on Christmas Day 2009. Billy (the proprietor) was extremely kind and generous towards us! (He felt bad that we made the +6 hour journey from Christchurch to Franz Josef on Christmas Day). Billy had decorated our room with chocolates, flower buds, and sweet cakes....definitely went above and beyond for 2 travelers on Christmas Day! The room was lovely! -- spacious, clean, and extremely comfortable, plus the view of the snow capped mountains was absolutely breathtaking! The motel is directly in the middle of the Franz Josef Village, and literally 200 feet from the Franz Josef Glacier Guide Tours (our reason for visiting Franz Josef). Would absolutely stay here again if we ever make it back to NZ's South Island --- and we'll never forget Billy's amazing hospitality!

We were on our honeymoon (visiting from California) and this was our second stop on a trip through New Zealand and Bora Bora. We were looking for a nice hotel/motel after visiting Fox Glacier.

We chose this property because it was rated #1 in the area in Franz Josef.

POSITIVES:
Upgraded Room: we booked through the website and even though we had only 2 people, we had a room that could have comfortably slept 5. Not sure this was intentional, but they were more than happy to let us keep it.
Location: Franz Josef is not big, so everything was comfortably walkable.
Kitchen amenities: there was plenty of kitchen stuff, although we didn't use it.

NEGATIVES:
Cost: I hadn't stayed in a motel for many years, so was pretty shocked at the price relative to what we got. Similar to another recent review, there doesn't seem to be much competition here so they are able to charge more.

All in all, it was overpriced and ultimately a motel room is what it is - nothing special - but it served our needs.

Accommodation is restricted in this part of NZ and as Franz Josef is a small village in a national park it's likely to stay that way. We had read some good reviews on this motel and while it was of acceptable standard it was one of the most expensive places we stayed at. For Aussies the glaciers and temperate rainforests are unique and the drive from Queenstown is spectacular making Franz Josef well worth a visit. irrespective of accommodation prices. Travellers who are familiar with mountain scenery in places like the Rockies might find this expensive compared to other places in NZ.

I can only confirm what all the other reviews about the Alpine Glacier Motel say.
If you fail to be impressed with this place then your standards are set way too high.
Would not hesitate to stay here again.

We stayed here one night while passing through the West Coast. Although enjoyable, you get a lot more for your money elsewhere in NZ.

The good points of this property are the spacious room (we had a 1BR Deck Unit), comfortable bed, cleanliness, view of the mountains, friendly staff, availability of free DVD movies in the office, and the nice bathroom with good water pressure in the shower.

It's not worth paying extra for the deck. The deck is really small and faces the main street. You have no privacy, and get the same view out your window. We left the deck and windows closed most of the time because people were smoking. We also closed our curtains because otherwise people can look in the room from the main street.

The kitchen facilities were pretty bare-bones. We only had a 2-element hot plate and microwave. The pots/pans were quite limited, and there is a $20 extra charge for not doing your own dishes. We never paid extra for dish service anywhere else in NZ.

Don't waste your time going motel shopping in Franz Josef. This should be you first and last stop. Room was a smallish queen/single/sofabed, but with well equipped kitchenette. The thing that separates this place is the staff. Extremely friendly and helpful, with tips on local dining (where to go, where to avoid), and ideas for further travel and excursion outside of the area. Glad we wandered in!
