“The most awesome restaurant / chill out venue on the South Island”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 14, 2013 via mobile

Excellent food and craft beers as well as amazing decor and music. 88 could be the hottest spot in the trendiest and coolest parts of any major city in the world, yet it's located near to a glacier on the west coast of New Zealand's South Island. Highly recommended that you drop by to experience this slice of heaven!

“Bad food, Good service”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2013

The service is great. The waiters were friendly and helpful. While knowledgeable about the type of food they had, the waiters were not knowledgeable about Asian food.

The lack of knowledge seemed to be rampant throughout the whole restaurant including the kitchen. I ordered the Nasi Goreng for NZD 17. First of all, they used the wrong type of rice to fry so the fried rice was soggy. Next, the pea and corn were not properly cooked. Whilst I can accept that not everybody does it the same way, few people would put uncooked peas and corn in Nasi Goreng. Next was the "fried egg". Instead of frying the egg, they burnt the egg and served it cold! I asked if this was the way fried eggs was cooked and they said that that is how its cooked in asia! Really? Obviously not a well travelled and rather uneducated about Asian cooking crew.

Now comes the best part - the two little sticks of "satay" First of all, they overcooked the poor chicken that probably died sometime in 2012. It was tough, full of fibre and the lack of proper garnishing for the satay was prominent as much as it was astonishing in a bad way.

I was asked by the waiter how the food was. Well, being surrounded by New Zealanders and being in a foreign country, I was polite - socially acceptable yet totally insincere.

This place is reserved and best appreciated by those who have little experience of proper and good Asian cooking.. Best of luck!

“Splendid food and service”

This is the 2nd time we have visited Franz Josef and we were not impressed with the restaurants the first time. This new restaurant is both stylish and offers good food and service. Highly recommended

“Delicious food and great service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 1, 2013

Definitely one of our most memorable food experiences. Ate here 3 times in 2 days because it was so good. Asian fusion may be passé to some but this was excellent. Had some very good meals on our NZ trip but this was the first time we felt the need to share.

“An unexpected pleasure”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2013

This place looked a bit out of place in tiny Franz Josef, with very urban decor. We thought it would be a bit out of our price range, but it was actually around the same level as the other restaurants we looked at (mains were between 15-30 dollars) so we gave it a go. I ordered the beef cheeks, which was melt-in-our mouth delicious and topped off with a very subtle but fragrant sauce. My partner had the Pad Thai which he was very impressed with, and found the spicing to be spot on. Another bonus was the beer, from a craft brewery in Nelson. Made a nice change from the usual Speights offerings!
