“Great value here”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2014

I stayed in a modern rain forest suite and I was very impressed. Very private, very comfortable. A gas fire, spa bath, leather couch & a small but well equipped kitchen. I loved seeing the fan tails flitting just meters from the deck. The managers are very friendly and obliging.

Well located with easy access on foot to eateries and shops. Quiet and quiet location. More privacy than in many motels and a pleasant greenery view from the room. Relaxed atmosphere was welcome. Easy parking on site.

The room we had was massive and over two floors but still felt very cosy and exactly what we wanted after a long drive. There was a good seating area and a well equipped kitchen, complete with anything you would need to cook (a good change from some of the motels we have stayed in). The bed was very comfortable and we actually ended up wishing that we could have stayed a second night. It's also in a good location, set back from the main street but still only a 10 minute walk from the restaurants. Ideally placed for both glaciers too.

Friendly receptionist but not always at her desk so had to wait a while. Apartment was clean and comfortable. Close to travel to the glaciers - 25 minute drive. Local convenients shops if you need anything. Franz Josep glaciers a good walk but you need to drive about fifteen minutes.

Previous review commenting on lady owner was very mean. She may not be as outgoing as some but with us she was very polite and helpful. Maybe a case of you get what you give.

Our apartment was surprisingly large, very well equipped and spotlessly clean. A large picture window provided great views of the rainforest and mountains.

The free wifi worked very well too.

The motel itself is well placed for walking to all parts of Franz Josef with a good choice of restaurants close by.

We can recommend the food, beer and ambience at the Monteith's pub a couple of doors away.

Franz Josef is quite a lively little place but we found it a pleasant place to stay.

TIP: The weather can change here very rapidly and it has one of the highest rainfalls (with cloud!) in NZ. So if you want to take the helicopter up to the glaciers, don't hesitate to book and take the first slot you can get. If they don't fly, you can shift your booking and you only pay when you actually go.

We knew what to expect when the receptionist could not crack her face to greet us. The room was gloomy and damp. The street is a disgrace with tatty backpacker accommodation predominating. The only reason we were there was to visit the Hot Glacial Pools which were very nice, but we could not get out of town fast enough in the morning

Room Tip: Is there one???

Best thing about Franz Josef is the hot pools, really a great afternoon after a long drive. Punga Cove motel is expensive and rather gloomy in the room. Best take supplies with you as the village shop is expensive also.
