“Fantastic spot - roomy and airy motel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2009

Sunset Motel was a great place to stay and, we think, one of the better options in a small town. The rooms were clean, comfortable and airy. We stayed in a mountain view room, which was reasonably priced and did have views of the mountains. Mt Cook even dared to show its face more than once! The bed was comfortable and the kitchen fairly well equipped. The bathroom spaciaous and the heated towel rack, a familiar site on our 3 week trip around the South Island, a pleasant little touch. The Motel also has a laundry with washers and dryers that we found very helpful.

The motel is located within a 10-15 minute walk to the town, certainly not to far to wander for an evening meal. The location was nice as the motel did not look into any unpleasantness or other motels, but instead a lovely English garden of what seemed to be a house. We found it quite and peaceful there, no helicopter noise problems. Otherwise we were surrounded by vacant farming land. The staff there were helpful and pleasant. We would definitely recommend to stay at Sunset Motel!

We stayed in a ‘Mountain view studio room’ for 1 night in Dec 2008. The room was new, reasonably spacious, neat and very clean. Nice view of Southern Alps. The place modern and is close to the town centre, scenic helicopters and fox Glacier. It was quite noisy in the morning as the helicopters were constantly taking-off and landing in the land beside the motel. In my opinion, the room was excellent, but overpriced, compared to other places we stayed in.

Nice neat, tidy and new motel.
Basic amenities.
Nice view (for Fox) from the back of our room.
Overpriced for what you get.

We arrived at Fox Glacier at about 1500hrs in the afternoon and went to see Fox and Franz Joeseph Glaciers before booking into our motel. On arrival, I checked in at reception and was informed that our booking was for 2 nights, and we had only requested 1. The guy was very good and said that if we only wanted 1 night there was nothing he could do but let us stay for the one night. Apparently he has a lot of errors with internet bookings, but most of them are caused by the Golden Chain Motel booking system. Rooms were nicely appointed, very clean and well maintained The bathroom was fairly small, but adequate for the purpose. There is no restaurant at this motel, so we ventured up to the township to see what was available. Well, there was not much on offer. There is about 3 or 4 places to eat so we chose the Café Neve as they had a steak on the menu and we love our steaks. The meal was a little while coming, but when it arrived it was presented butterfly’d on a serving of vegetables and was very nice, a bit fancy for me. I thought it was a little expensive, but when I realised where we were, miles from anywhere, then I thought that the price was reasonable. We were lucky that we went to the glaciers in the afternoon as the whole area was fogged in the next morning. We had booked a Helicopter flight, but that had to be cancelled because of the weather. Not happy, but what can you do.

We had a one night stay at Fox Glacier during the April School Holidays.

Fox Glacier itself is fine. Great part of the world. Excellent scenery and a great dining experience at the carvey/buffet put on at the nearby Fox Glacier Hotel.

Sunsel Motel is modern, well situated not too far from town but is overated and expensive compared to other places we stayed of a similar or better quality.

Our family room had a rather strong odour of disinfectant or something similar which was really off puting for our stay. The room had been closed up and was extremely stuffy. Took a long time to become inhabitable. The room was reasonably spacious but nothing outstanding and just had an ambiance of adequate but cheap. (unlike the pricing unfortunately). The owner was quite friendly but otherwise I would have been happier with other accomodation.

As stated by other reviewers, the view of Mt Cook is certainly no better than what you would get at other motels close by.

We very rarely find complaint with any accomodation and are not really complaining as such here, but I think you can do better at Fox Glacier or at least find something comparable for a more reasonable price.

We stayed here for 1 night prior to a heli-hike on Fox Glacier. The Motel is a 10 minute walk (or 2 minute drive) from the town centre, but that isn’t really a problem, and indeed means you are away from traffic noise. Our room was very generously sized, clean and comfortable, with a good bathroom and a kitchen area that was quite adequate for preparing breakfast. Don’t, though, expect too much of the views from the picture windows. The near-distance views are uninspiring, whilst you won’t get the benefit of the alleged views towards the glacier unless you happen to be in your room at a time when the cloud has lifted. The trouble is, when the cloud does lift, the chances are you’ll be on the glacier, not in your room!

Like most motel accommodation, one couldn’t describe the Sunset Motel as having any character, but as motels go, it was good value at $179 for a large and comfortable room.
