We stayed at Reflections Lodge, Fox Glacier for two days in November 2010 on a six week drive around NZ (both islands). We used homestays/b+b for all stops except the first two nights.Overall we found the homestay an excellent provider of accommodation in NZ which gave us a detailed insight into NZ life.It was valuable to us to have outward going hosts who placed in front of us their lifestyle, views and opinions. From these people we learned a lot and gained much pleasure.
We had read the site reviews on the internet and decided to give the lodge a try despite one terrible review compared with many excellent ones.We can only make the following comments :-
We found the lodge spotless, the living room had a view of Mount Cook and Mount Tasman to die for (not just lovely). It was quiet, peaceful and with a stunning garden whose pool reflected the snow capped peaks.
A wonderful welcome with an immediate pot of tea and freshly baked cakes combined with an accurate briefing of what Fox offered and a recommendation of where to dine that night. It was the Matheson Cafe situated to give the finest uninterrupted views of the peaks which when the sun is setting is absolutely memorable - adjacent to the cafe is a particularly splendid tourist pavilion with quality souvenirs.
Large breakfasts were wholesome and more than adequate.
There was no TV in our bedroom, but one available in one of the two lounges.
Our bedroom was lovely and spacious, not en-suite but a well appointed bathroom was across the corridor for our sole use and bathrobes were provided .... as were laundry facilities.
Our hostess,Raelene, was an extrovert who made us laugh a lot.
Humour is in the house, as is a love of helicopters - we were particularly impressed with the helicopter on the lawn when we arrived !!.Yes,in Fox Glacier helicopters are everywhere - that's how you get about.
Skype was made available but we did not use it.
One night we stayed in for an evening meal.It was super, Crayfish, Mussels,Whitebait and Abalone in plentiful amounts with a perfect salad and potatoes followed by a delicious fruit dessert. A delightful feast with much wine.
Security ( which appeared to be of concern to one reviewer) - we are not city dwellers therefore we understand the lack of need to lock everthing up.
Yes, there were no locks on the bedroom doors nor was the front door locked at night - Thank God we do not live where there is a need to be so cautious, long may NZ have places where this is the norm.
Would we stay again? Yes
Would we recomment it ? Yes, definately
We are so glad we ignored the one poor review of Reflection Lodge .... You can never please everybody - that's life.
