“Great surprise! Lovely couple and nice accommodation too.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2012

What a nice evening with spent at Bruce Bay with this lovely host couple that tried and succeeded too hosting us in a very special way. We had whitebait for starters with good wine and cheese. There was another couple in the b&B and conversation at the dinner and before was interesting too. The morning after our hostess prepared for us some sandwiches for the road it was a nice touch ... I surely would recommend this place for everyone passing by this region.

We stayed for one night enroute from Fox Glacier to Wanaka & what a pleasant surprise, with luxurious accommodation, delicious food, plenty of wine & a really friendly couple of hosts. Our young children in particular loved the trip down to feed the curious eels in the creek while I really appreciated John taking me out for a couple of hours fly fishing the next morning. What a wonderful, albeit brief stay. Good on you.

Traveling around the South Island on our honeymoon road trip took us through beautiful Bruce Bay, and what a pleasant surprise it was. Jacqui and John made our one night there a delightful experience! John had just caught fresh lobster and fish that day, which we enjoyed with another couple staying at Mahitahi. Jacqui prepared an amazing dinner, complete with John’s catch, a medley of fresh vegetables from her garden, and delicious desserts! We really enjoyed their company and our room was spacious and comfortable.

The best place on the South Island so far. The lodge is along highway nr 6 and you are in the middle of nowhere!
Problem? No way! Per dinner drinks between 6 and 7 followed by a lovely dinner from Jacqui. More wine? You do not even have to ask! Next day lobster as a snack followed by blue cot. Breakfast are also very good including a cooked item.
John took us to the beach and told many interesting things and we had the best view on Mt. Cook.

Accommodation was excellent. Slept like a baby. We stayed in the apartment and had a separate lounge room with kitchen, great bath room and bed room.

Make sure you book this place on the West Coast. It was also great fun to have dinner with a couple from Sydney and of course Jacqui and John.

We stayed at the Mahitahi Lodge for two nights.

Jacqui and John are the perfect hosts. They made us feel welcome from the first minute. Jacqui is a great cook and John tells great stories about the forest and the sea. He even took us on a walk through the forest and on a early morning beach walk.

Diner in the house is superb. John and Jacqui join diner which is great. We had fresh cray fish and whitebait, all caught by John.

The house is self made by John, from trees he planted himself. The rooms are very spacious and clean. There is wifi and all kind of complementary stuff like coffee, cookies, etc.

We did an excursion to the Fox Glacier, which is about one our drive. Jacqui and John know a lot of things to do, and we wished we would have stayed for a few more days.

If you ever go to this part of the west coast, make sure to book at the Mahitahi Lodge!

We're sorry it took so long to write this review, but now that we're here we can honestly say that Mahitahi lodge was a highlight of our tour up the west coast. Being a kiwi myself, even I was amazed at how incredibly lovely John and Jacqui were throughout our stay. The food was lovely (I'm convinced the calories were worth it), and our hosts were flawless in service, even preparing a spare room in advance in case our reservation for twins was wrong (which it was). We had a good night's sleep, and were all prepared to tackle our glacier hike the next day. We've even started planning for my boyfriend's parents to visit when they can!

Thank you so much Jacqui and John, we will make sure to visit again.

If you want to get away from it all (no cell phone coverage!) and relax in comfort with friendly local hosts, plenty of great food and wine then this is the place for you and yours.
