In July last year, we were on Holiday in the South Island with our Friends and two 8 Year old daughters. We were travelling down the West Coast of the South Island, and Decided to visit Shantytown.
We enjoyed looking around at all of the exhibits and then were able to ride on the old Steam Railroad, pulled by a Locomotive which has been fully restored, and runs well. The Children were invited to help fire the Locomotive, which was a great experience for them. There was a visit to a sawmill which had a video display showing how it all used to work, which was quite amazing.
After that, we were taken to a demonstration of Gold Sluicing the way it used to be carried out, and all of this was explained to us by the friendly staff. Following this, we were shown the way to where the Children were taught how to use a Gold Pan, and even though we thought the gold was already in the sand, the children were delighted to find that they had discovered gold!
After that, We were shown a Movie in the Holographic Theatre, which is only One of Four Permanent Installations in the world.
We then went and got all dressed up in costumes of the period to have photos taken, which we received via Email when we returned home, because their photo printer was down at the time. - Good Service.
All in all, a Good half day was spent at the attraction, Great for the Children.
