“Perfect Ruby Wedding Surprise!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2012

Our daughters booked accommodation at Hillsfield House as a surprise night away to celebrate our special wedding anniversary. It was a real treat and every bit as good as described. Jo was very accommodating bringing extra glasses when friends arrived to pick us up for dinner, and making sure that everything was just perfect. The room is gorgeous with it's 4 poster bed and breakfast was beautifully presented as well as delicious, and included a congratulations card for us - very thoughtful! We will be reccommending this place to others.

This weekend was our second stay at this fabulous B&B. And I've booked for our next trip to Malborough as well. It is one of the most comfortable and easy to stay places imaginable. There are two rooms available, an upstairs and downstairs in a separate dwelling close to the home. We have stayed in both rooms and both of the same high standard. There is a high standard of cleanliness. The colour scheme is restful. Flat screen TV and large armchairs to sit in. Attention to details is second to none: there are locally made bath products; a decanter with sherry in for an evening drink; home made biscuits in a jar; and carrot cake was delivered for afternoon tea. The breakfast is fresh fruit; freshly baked croissants, museli, tea or plunger coffee.. etc. Delivered at a time of your choosing. Jo and Steve are warm and welcoming, knowledgeable about the local restaurants, vineyards and attractions.

We are booked to return again in December and looking forward to it.

If Hillsfield House was a Carlsberg Lager, this bed and breakfast would probably be the best Bed and Breakfast in the world. The hosts Steve and Jo are excellent, nothing is too much trouble. Highly recommend it,

This place is one of the nicest accommodation experiences I have ever had. We couldn't have rated the breakfast, the rooms, or the gardens any more highly. Jo was the most pleasant host, and was so helpful and nice to talk to. The animals she keeps (including cats, alpacas, and miniature ponies) were nice to visit and finding outside the window each morning too. We will definitely revisit when i am in the area again.

Our final destination on this trip is the beautiful Marlborough wine-producing region on the north end of the South Island. It bares similarities to Napa-Sonoma, accommodating both boutique labels from homestead growers, as well as large industrial vintners.

Our hosts Jo and Steve pamper visitors at their lovely B&B, Hillsfield House, situated centrally to dozens of wineries. Their pets, 4 alpaca, 3 miniature horses, and a black cat extend a rural character to their lovely Chateau-styled property.

I tried to make friends with one fuzzy alpaca by breathing, nose to nose, as instructed. With no foreshadowing, my reward was to be summarily spit upon. Imagine the powerful burst of compressed air you get at the optometrist to check out impending glaucoma. I took an oath in that moment to specify pure merino wool for my future knitwear requirements.

The bicycles they provide allowed us to tour the region for 3 days through light rain and shine, and gain a first hand feel for the territory just awakening to spring: perfectly manicured vines, newborn lambs and their mothers grazing in between the endless plantings, drop-ins to “cellar doors” (tasting rooms) for samplings of Sauvignon Blanc and spicy olive oil with brown bread, and comfy lunches served at some of the estates.

Roaming the quiet rustic lanes allowed us to drink in the scents, the symphony of birds, and the peace of the region – a perfect conclusion to invigorating discovery in New Zealand.

We had a wonderful stay in February and booked both rooms for ourselves and friends. The rooms are spacious and we loved the courtyard room particularly. Breakfast is filling, home-made and beautifully presented. It was also nice to get back in the afternoon and find home-made cake waiting for us. Jo was very friendly and did all she could to make life easy and relaxing. She loaned us bikes and helmets the first afternoon and was ready to adjust seat heights and provide maps etc. The bikes were in very good condition and perfect for cycling round the vineyards which were very close. Jo also booked and drove us to a restaurant one night. She was very helpful. We have already recommended friends to stay with Jo and would highly recommend it to you too.

Hillsfield House is a gem. It is situated perfectly, so we were able to ride our bikes to several wineries with ease and minimal exertion. The scenery around the property is spectacular. There are alpacas and miniature horses in an enclosed area on the property and they love the company of curious guests. Jo and Steve are great hosts. The room we stayed in (upstairs) was very cozy and comfortable. Free wi-fi was provided. Breakfasts are brought to the room each morning on a time decided on by the guest. There is a delicious assortment of breads, jams, fruits, cereal, juice and coffee.
Again, what amazing hosts. Jo even drove us to dinner one night and helped us rescue a bottle of wine we left in the cab later that evening.
We cannot say enough great things about our experience at Hillsfield House
