“Feels like returning home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2012

This was our third visit to Owen River Lodge. We love the relaxed atmosphere. Felix and his team are very professional. Ryan, the chef, supplied us with such good food. We think Felix should promote the lodge as a foodie destination. It really is five star food. The rooms are spacious and beds very comfortable - Most important after big days on the rivers. The fly-fishing is superb on Owen River in front of the lodge. The guides are very professional and have years of experience. We had one of our "best ever"days with reference to numbers of fish landed. We plan to return again next year. Felix has a wonderful sense of humour. Keeley adds a homely feel to the lodge. We fondly remember fun times around the dinner table. Thanks again.

Room Tip: All rooms are quiet and comfortable with lovely views.

I was very fortunate to have time to fish for two months in the north and south island of NZ at the start of 2012. I passed through and visited many lodges and fishing spots. To put it simply; Owen River Lodge was the most fantastic place I came across on my fly fishing travels.
Felix Borenstein is a terrific host and has clearly invested a lot of time and love into the stunning property which overlooks the Owen river. The views from the rooms and decking are magnificent. The attention to detail is superb in every way that the lodge is run. He employs an excellent chef (Ryan) who prepared food as good as any Michelin star restaurant and there is wonderful relaxed atmosphere in general.
I managed to lose a bag in transit and Felix quietly chased up the lost item for two days and this ensured it arrived safe and sound while I happily settled into the most incredible fly fishing.
The guides were astounding at spotting fish, 'going the extra mile' and provided great company and knowledge. I certainly learnt a tremendous amount from my guide Pete Flintoft and my fly fishing has certainly improved considerably as a result. A fantastic place and the days heli fishing I will never forget. I will be back! Thanks again.

After reading so much about NZ in fly fishing magazines, it was time for the Fergus's to take our first fishing trip to experience its famous rivers for ourselves. Our choice to have our whole trip arranged through Felix at Owen River Lodge was without a doubt the best choice we made. The quality of fishing was the best we have ever had in over 20 years fishing, especially with the help of our local guide Pointer Pete who's eyes are super sharp. The service at the lodge through our witty friend Felix was stand out. Ryan's food was sensational and well received after a big day on the river and the local beer and wine was farrrkin excellent. A must for all fly fishers bucket list. As the old mate Arnie say's "I'll be back"!!!

Room Tip: Let Felix know your requirements and he will do the rest.

This was my second trip to Owen River and this time I went solo. The fishing was fantastic with 10 landed and a further 5 "bust offs". The weather was kind with blue skies, forests, rivers and mountains that only the soth island of New Zealand can provide.
Felix is definitely the host that makes you feel at home, with a great atmosphere, comfortable rooms and with a menu to remember!

I returned to Australia refreshed as all good holiday should do. Thanks Felix and the team.
Can't wait to return.

We recently made a visit to Owen River Lodge over our Honeymoon and the lodge exceeded our expectations even after everything that we had heard. Felix is a terrific host and is accommodating in every way. Pete was hands down the best guide we have ever fished with. My wife Katie, had never touched a fly rod and landed a 6.5 lb brown on a dry fly on her third day! Pete was a great teacher and I know that he hooked Katie for many trips to come. Last, but definitely not least, was the outstanding cuisine put together by Ryan on a nightly basis. He is an excellent chef and could rival the chefs at any restaurant we have dined.

Felix, we got back on Sunday and on Monday I was researching flights for our next trip. Thanks again and we look forward to seeing you soon.

If you have not stalked large trout in the crystal-clear rivers of New Zealand's south island, and you would like to make your first venture a memorable one, then Felix Borenstein's Owen River Lodge is a base you should seriously consider. Felix's enthusiastic hospitality, the style and comfort of the cabins, chef Ryan's imaginative food and the conviviality of fellow anglers over local wines at the dinner table make a winning combination. The Lodge is within three-quarters of an hour's drive of something like 25 first-class rivers offering sight-fishing in most weather conditions. Felix's guides - in our case, Boris Cech and Greg Chisnall - are razor-keen and have an almost miraculous ability to spot fish for you and then help you catch them. Highly recommended.

If you want four-star fishing combined with four-star dining then Owen River Lodge is the place for you. Felix, the owner, and Ryan, the Chef make you feel right at home especially if home is where you get gourmet meals served with a flair I won't forget. The fishing is superb. Our guides, Boris and Lindsey, seemed to have xray vision when it came to spotting fish. They also had a boatload of patience when it came to helping an inexperienced fly fisherman.
