4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2008

After spending a cold, fairly miserable night in Mole Hut, high above Murchison, we decided to head back down a day early and were delighted that Murchison Lodge could fit us in. What a contrast - I think the bathroom was bigger than the whole hut! I have never enjoyed a hot (enormous!) bath more. It is a long way from London, but we may even go back to NZ just to stay here again.

  • Liked — Huge bathroom and comfy bed!
  • Disliked — Having to leave it and go home.

We cannot say enough good things about the Murchison Lodge or about Merve and Shirley! My mother and I (her adult daughter) were driving from Fox Glacier to Blenheim and needed a nice place to stay for one evening. We were more than pleasantly surprised and will plan a future trip back to Murchison just to have the opportunity to spend more time at the Lodge and surrounding area. (It bears noting that the area surrounding the Lodge (and the entire drive from Fox Glacier to the Lodge) was stunning. Our travel guides and internet research had not highlighted this drive (as they had some other drives), but it was really beautiful!)

At the Lodge, our room (with two beds and a private entrance on the first floor) was huge. And either of us could have lived in the bathroom alone (which had both a huge tub and a lovely shower). The living room was beautiful, and nothing could be nicer than relaxing by the fire.

Merve and Shirley were terrific. They worked with us prior to our arrival to accomodate our somewhat late arrival, even preparing several terrific "platters" for us to snack on once we arrived (in the event local restaurants had already closed). These platters were huge and offered a wonderful variety of truly delicious food. Merve and Shirley also offer many excellent wines by the glass.
As another reviewer mentioned, Merve and Shirley strike a perfect balance of being professional and personable. They have traveled to amazing places and have terrific stories to share. They seem geniunely curious about the experiences of their guests. We could have sat and talked to them for hours. They can recommend many great activities in the local area--we will be forever grateful to Shirley for recommending that we visit Nelson's World of Wearable Art, which was outstanding!

Merve and Shirley have filled the Lodge with photographs, furniture and other arts and crafts that they have created and collected on their travels. All of these little touches (combined with the wonderful platters and delicious breakfast in the morning) made us feel right at home. We would highly recommend the Lodge, and it was a perfect place to rest while traveling between the towns on the Sounds (Nelson, Picton, Blenheim, etc.) and the west coast (Fox Glacier, Franz Josef Glacier, Punakaiki, Greymouth, etc.).

We stayed for one night in February and were impressed by the natural friendliness of the hosts. Also had evening meal here and a packed lunch full of homemade goodies for the following days journey. The packed lunch was a real treat to eat and I can honestly say it was the best packed lunch I have ever had !!! Accomodation is comfortable and the lounge is lovely and large with squashy sofas to relax into. Well recommended, and top marks to Merve and Shirley for making their lodge such a welcoming place to stay.

We don't offer evening meals any more as we have got busier, However, the local cafes and pubs offer many options for eating out and are only a few minutes pleasant walk away.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2006

We stayed at Murchison Lodge in November this year. We had the upstairs double room which is enormous, spectacular and well worth the small extra cost. The owners have created a lovely home which visitors are privileged to share. They sleep in a separate cottage so the lodge is yours to enjoy with the other guests for the evening. Breakfast is taken with other guests around the kitchen table and is substantial and of excellent quality. The hosts are experienced in the many outdoor activities available locally and will help/advise on these. They strike just the right balance between friendliness and being professional.
Dinner may be taken at one of several (good) local restaurants within walking distance.
We liked it very much.
