“Relaxing, friendly place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2012

Riversong Cottages are two cottages, sleeping four each and a studio, sleeping two. They are in a gorgeous cottage garden, made to sit in and relax while social sing with friends. The hosts are very accommodating and friendly, selling green eggs from their own chickens. The studio has a microwave, but no kitchen facilities. The accommodation is clean and the bathroooms are modern and clean. Really the only niggle I have is the small hand washbasin, a small price to pay for spending time in this blissful place.

Room Tip: Studio is perfect for a couple, the two cottages suit two couples or a family. All thre are worth ev...

We stayed in the self-contained Tui unit in a private cottage garden bush-like setting. It had a lovely sunny deck with table and chairs and great hammock stretched between trees to relax in, and chill to the bird-song :-)

We enjoyed doing the six-mile bush-walk to admire a waterfall, located a 10 minute drive up the valley from Murchison, and enjoyed local cafes.

Great hosts, great service, great spa-bath. Lovely peaceful weekend get-away.

Room Tip: Tui has great cottage garden outlook.

There aren't many lodging options in the tiny town of Murchison, which is how we ended up at Riversong Cottages.

We spent three nights in Tui, one of two self-contained cottages located behind the home of owner Jenny - $150 per night.

Our unit was clean, spacious and well equipped, but it was mighty cold the first night, thanks to a rather lethargic heat pump in the lounge and us arriving on one of the coldest days of the year.

It took several hours, but once the place warmed up, we settled in nicely and were quite comfortable for the duration of our stay.

There was a portable heater which worked nicely in the bathroom and electric blankets on the bed, which were a godsend the first night.

The cottage is surrounded by gardens and has a patio, but given the weather and time of year, we weren't able to utlize either. We did use the WIFI, which was a bit hit and miss. It only worked in the twin bedroom, where we had to prop the laptop on top of a suitcase on a bed, open the drapes and point it towards the owner's patio. But it was free, so no drama.

A more powerful heater and a reading lamp in the lounge would have been much appreciated, but otherwise, we quite enjoyed our stay.

And of course I fell in love with Felix the cat, who popped over for a pat several times during our stay.

Accommodation options around the district are fairly limited. This is a great value option: self-contained simple cottage in a pretty garden with welcoming hosts. I was traveling with my teenage daughter and a German exchange student mid-winter en route to West Coast. We spent two nights there - cold time of year and Jenny had heat pump on well before our arrival so we were toasty warm. Swing bridge was fun, a couple of great cafes and some good walks.
Very good value and lovely hosts.

My fiance and I escaped to Murchison following the second earthquake in Christchurch. The owners, Jenny and Melissa, kindly offered us a discount and a free spa upon hearing we're coming from Christchurch. This was the perfect retreat; the accommodation was beautifully set and well-equipped, the town was sleepy but offered the essentials, and Jenny and Melissa were extremely welcoming. Nice walks were available immediately from our cabin, and Nelson Lakes is nearby. This is the perfect place for a peaceful getaway.

Riversong and Murchison were a real surprise. We expected a small town that most people pass through, instead we found a town that whilst small was brimming with people who love their area and are keen to share their town. Riversong was a lovely old cottage, really clean and a well supplied kitchen. It was nice not to have to pay to use a washing machine too! The hosts were very welcoming and lets us pick some salad vegies from their garden and introduced our children to their farm animals. Great place to access good value white water rafting (heaps cheaper than anywhere else).
