“DO NOT STAY AT THE SKOTEL”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2010

Our stay at the Skotel was extremely disaapointing. The place is dirty, musty with cobwebs in the room and the furniture has not been updated since the 1970's! There is nothing to do in the hotel once the sun has gone down and with only 3 TV channels and 3 small children in a cramped space with a terrible dinner menu that none of us could eat, we went to be bed, hungry, angry with blocked noses from the disgusting smell of dust or mould (not sure which or both) on beds that were so old and pillows that were flat. My son would not sleep on the bunk bed because it wobbled so much. At $185.00 for a superior room, there is nothing superior about the Skotel. Do no waste your money staying there! We would never have booked the hotel if we had known how bad it was. If we could have, we would have gone to the Chateau but there were no vacancies on the night. I would recommend staying in the village on the other side of the moujntain where there is something to do in the evenings and then drive back up the mountain in the morning to ski. I would thoroughly recommend Happy Valley for skiing for families with children. It was wonderful! Don't be fooled about the entertainment at Skotel, they have a very old area with encylopaedias to read and books so old it was laughable. They haved a cheek to be charging that kind of money. It is disgusting - please do not waste your money by staying there! The owner should be ashamed of such a place. Spend some money ont it. They are charging way too much! In Rotarua was paid $105.00 per night for a family of 5 with heaps of spare pillows and blankets and a very clean room and with entertainment everywhere and foxtel. Thsi guys is ripping everyone off! There is no place in the sections below to describe our awful experience at this hotel.

We had booked two superior rooms for three nights through the internet, for the youngsters to ski and snowboard on Mount Ruapehu. They had such a great time we booked a further night, which cost about 25% more. The hotel seemed clean enough in the bedrooms, but needs a deep clean in the back-packers' kitchen, the games room etc. All the games seemed to be out of order, the kitchen facilities were lacking or not working ( not even a tin-opener), chairs broke when sat upon. The restaurant provided a very poor meal at exorbitant cost, and breakfasts were unbelievably expensive for what was provided. As there is very little else in the village, and the hotel is so close to the slopes, they can get away with it, but this place could be so much better. The staff are all very friendly, and reception very competent. I do recommend the ski equipment shop, Edge to Edge, where the staff were exceedingly friendly, and the prices very reasonable.

We stayed for 2 nights, no TV for the 1 st night! Requested one, when we arrived at the end of the day from skiing, still no TV, rooms hadn't been serviced either. Breakfast was appauling, I'll probably go back. Not much alternative in the immidiate area!

We stayed here for one night so our children (3 and 1 years) could experience the snow at Mt Ruapehu. The location was sensational but the rooms and service could do with some improvement. We stayed in a 'Superior' room but it was very basic and run-down. There was a double bed and a bunk to sleep 2 children. The facilities were adequate but it was not inviting or comfortable. In fact, the beds were very soft indeed and we could hardly sleep all night because we were not able to get comfortable. The bedding was old and the bathroom was drab. We had dinner in the restaurant and it was an 'Asian' buffet. Very strange collection of dishes, since when was risotto an Asian dish? Many of the dishes were dried out and overcooked but we did find enough food for the kids and children under 5 ate for free so not all bad. The staff we mostly lovely but some of them needed a bit more training and polish. On the plus side, the room was warm and we had fun at the snow. Now we just need to fix our backs.

A group of nearly 50 are hard to keep happy, the Skotel managed this and more, top marks to all staff, especially the General Manager, many thanks for a special stay!

Aberystwyth University (Wales, U.K) has held one of its Geography student fieldcourses here for a number of years. We find it ideal - and this year, April 2010 - was no exception. Based in Skotel, students have immediate access to a World Heritage landscape, and one of the world's great walks, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Skotel has stunning views of the volcano Mt Ngauruhoe across the subalpine moorland and beyond. The rooms are good, with tea and coffee provided, and there is a drying room, and a sauna in the basement. The manager and staff went out of the way to provide us with what we needed, including a large room for our exclusive use, and a special barbecue night. The food was abundant and excellent, and the bar stocks all the usual good NZ wine and beer. I'd strongly recommend this place both for personal travellers, and for touring groups.

Excellent location, we had a superior room looking out to spectacular views to Tongariro. We were walking out to the Tama Lakes, the track for which starts right next to the hotel.

This hotel is a little dated, but clean, and the price is appropriate. I guess it's a bit of a toss up whether to renovate and charge more or continue to offer the good pricing.

Though happy with the facilities the food was rather average. Had some good bluenose (fish) one night, but the venison the following night was a bit tough (waiter was apologetic and promised to feed back to the chef).

A comfortable place for a great long weekend though, and enjoyed the sauna after our long walk.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Skotel was established in the early 60s by a group of keen skiers who wanted the convenience of accommodation close to the ski-fields but more comfort than the ski lodges of that time. In 1986 it underwent a major expansion with the addition of restaurant, bar and other facilities. The old part of the building became the backpacker’s wing. Skotel has maintained its friendly informal atmosphere but now provides Qualmark three star accommodation and the exciting cuisine experiences of our new dinner menu. ... more   less
