“Worst Service EVER!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2013

People treated us like they were always doing us a favour. One thing that for me is personally unacceptable is when you pay for a service or a product and still no one respects you. There was always an arrogant attitude coming from the staff and actually rude. I stayed there two nights, and I got seriously annoyed and upset by the treatment that was given to us especially from the restaurant staff. I would not recommend this place. If I had know better, I would have just rented a campervan instead of a car and slept in the car. At least I wouldnt have been upset by anyone rude!!

Hate hotels that have no sense of what the word HOSPITALITY mean.

The vast majority of our hotel reviews are very positive about the helpfulness of our staff. Please come back to me with some specific issue for me to investigate since this is uncharacteristic of our staff.

My friends and I had a horrible experience at Skotel this weekend. It is located in the national park but the scenery on our ride up from Wellington was much more beautiful than Skotel's surroundings. We arrived on Friday at 8:45 PM and were told we could not order anything at the restaurant because the kitchen was closed. We then asked where we could go nearby to order something and our waiter told us that everywhere else was closed. He then said, "Fine, you can order from a limited menu--just pizza." So, we ordered two pizzas which he proceeded to give us in take-away containers. When we told him we planned on eating in the restaurant like everyone else, he came back 5 minutes later with tiny plates and no silverware. We had to ask three times for everything necessary to eat our food and the pizza slices were too big for the plates he gave us. The pizza itself was greasy and disgusting. The next day we ate there for breakfast. The prices were exorbitant--9 dollars for toast and coffee/tea/juice. The waitress was very rude and after some confusion in ordering, we saw the next day that she had charged us more than three times what was correct for the experience! We were not pleased. We also later discovered that there a great number of restaurants in the nearby area, all of which stay open past nine. So, the waiter lied to us so that we would eat there.

The front desk staff were also rude and unknowledgeable. They gave us wrong information about everything from the shuttle to the surrounding area, and we almost missed the (expensive) shuttle to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing because of it. This hotel specializes in people coming to hike the area, so they should know things as simple as how to get there and how much it will cost. Also, it would be nice if they offered hikers granola bars or water for free. Instead, they sell a limited variety for very high prices and when we asked about a nearby grocery store they once again gave us false information.

The room itself was pretty nice. The beds were very comfortable and it was relatively clean. We had a backpacking room with four beds and we each paid 25 a night.

Nevertheless, I did not enjoy my experience here at all. People would have better luck at one of the many hotels/backpackers in National Park village. Do not go here!

It was unfair to suggest our waiter was lying to get extra business. He gained no benefit from an extra meal order. Our kitchen had shut and he was trying to be helpful by offering pizza. He was correct that all of our restaurants in our Village shut before we do, but he should have informed the guests that in another village, 14 km away, there were restaurants still open. We apologise for that omission and for the mistake in double billing - partly caused by a change in order, mid-service.
The high NZ dollar does make food seem expensive in New Zealand but the Skotel price of $9NZD for one person of unlimited quantities of help-yourself varieties of toast, spreads, coffee or tea, plus juice is good value. In the hotel two hundred metres down the road a similar breakfast also costs $9 and in the local coffee shop it is more. It was necessary for our waitress to explain that, if only one has ordered, two people should not be eating from the buffet.

This mixed hostel/motel is a great place to be based if you are exploring the central plateau. The mixed nature of the accommodation can confuse some, with the hostel wing of the complex being just a hostel and that is basic. We stayed in the motel end of the complex and we happy with our 4 person room. It was clean and quiet and reasonably priced. The staff were helpful and accommodating of our extra request. The restaurant was excellent.
Only blemish was the consolidation of all the bills from restaurant and rooms into one bill. It is better practice to present an itemised bill at the end of each meal, get a signature and then add to room bill. The restaurant and bar staff were operating at capacity when we were there and so this might account for this.
Overall an excellent economic choice for accommodation.

Room Tip: The rooms facing east and north in the "superior" section have balconies with sensational...

10th Jan 2013, stayed one night. The cupboard-like spa and sauna were each disappointing. However, the evening restaurant & bar were much better than expected: the barman was a great comic, and the venison was the best meat I have ever tasted!

The next morning we wanted to take photos of the fantastic scenery, but the rain & low cloud prevented this. My advice: take your photos while you can!

This ski lodge/hotel is in a fabulous location, which is just as well as you won't want to spend too much time inside. We were given a room designed for 8 people to sleep (with 8 people a bathroom schedule will be important), but just one key. The bathroom was dirty and in need of upgrade. We waited an hour for our dinner, which was OK but too salty. The tables were sticky. Wifi is expensive and restricted which must be a problem for the under 25 market that they appear to be catering for. Can I recommend this place? No - I think I'd prefer to camp and make the most of the location.

We had a very comfortable room in this hotel, with stunning views of Mt Ngauruhu (even if it was hidden behind the clouds for most of the time...) and nice wood-panelling. The hotel facilities are good, the quality of dinner and breakfast was very good (the steaks were delicious!), but some re-decoration and refurbishing would make the place more fashionable.

Room: Superior Family Room. This would sleep 8: 1 queen bed in living room, 2 sets of bunks in bedroom, each with a double bunk on the bottom and a single up top. there was a nice balcony and a lookout area in front of the room. tea and coffee making facilities and a fridge.
There are lots of different room configurations, including backpacker dorms.

The positive things: awesome location, great place for exploring the area, nice nature walk right outside, really great food in the restaurant (but a hell of a wait, see below), cozy lounge and bar area.
The negative things: rather a long list I'm afraid...for $230NZ the unit was very tired, with a dirty bathroom floor and patchy carpet. There was a damp feeling, with condensation on the inside of the windows, and the rooms were cold (single glazed windows in an alpine resort?!). No extractor fan in bathroom added to the moisture inside. Access to our room was terrible, involving lots of corridors and stairs, with no lift access. Only one key for the room, that could sleep up to 8 people. Wi-fi is expensive and on a data-usage calculation(!! 2012 and this is being given??), which ran out very quickly, was very slow and was at extremely weak strength in the room.
The restaurant had wonderful food ( my companion's venison pie, however, was a little over-salted), but the table was sticky, and we had to wait nearly an hour for our main courses! I suggest you bring a book with you to the table.

Overall impressions: When we stayed there, the weather was terrible with rain and cold, which meant we had no view of the mountains. I'm sure that on a fine day this would be an incredible place to be, but this wouldn't change the overall quality of the rooms. Great location, desperately in need of modernisation (and for heavens sake, update your Internet access!!)

Room Tip: Disabled travelers, check access before you book!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Skotel was established in the early 60s by a group of keen skiers who wanted the convenience of accommodation close to the ski-fields but more comfort than the ski lodges of that time. In 1986 it underwent a major expansion with the addition of restaurant, bar and other facilities. The old part of the building became the backpacker’s wing. Skotel has maintained its friendly informal atmosphere but now provides Qualmark three star accommodation and the exciting cuisine experiences of our new dinner menu. ... more   less
