“Nice location; Great views!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2013

This hotel has a lovely setting and all the makings of a great place to stay. However, in my opinion - the price of this stay is higher than the service delivered. With a few updates (such as newer bathrooms in the room and a reliable elevator), this would be a much nicer place to stay.

It really is a breathtaking arrival, this massive beautiful hotel with Mt Ruapehu right behind it.
Our room was great, the service wonderful, the place quirky in a nice old fashioned way. Our two boys had a great time and were not bored when the weather turned bad. We found the hotel meals expensive initially but this was our first stop in NZ and we later learned they were actually very reasonably priced when compared with other restaurants. Food in NZ is expensive wherever you go. Overall a great time and we'd go back tomorrow.

From the moment we stepped off the Train in National Park, the staff took great care of us. After a short shuttle ride we checked in and immediately felt at ease. Highlights: Of the Chateau: Out Room, Backgammon in the Lounge, Snooker (we were rookies, but the bartender took care of us), Lounge Bar (Classic cocktails with a Feijoa twist - sours and mules), Pia Hanga, overall ambiance, staff. Of the Area: Although a rainstorm a few days before our arrival melted most of the snow, there were plenty of things to keep us busy. We had great weather for short treks around. Silica Rapids should not be missed. Taranaki Falls was flowing full after the storm. These offered great well-maintained tracks with opportunities for some great views. The Department of Conservation Visitor Center holds some excellent displays - and don't pass up the short videos!

Room Tip: The original room we had was great. I would suggest a valley long range view toward the golf course...

Just 4 hours drive from Wellington, this Hotel was somewhere I had wanted to stay since first seeing it 10 years ago. The hotel appears like a mirage when approaching it - like a replica of an imagined European hotel in the Swiss Alps, but with the backdrop of Mt Ruapehu.
This weekend getaway proved to exceed expectations in many ways.
The building itself is very interesting and attractively retro (1920-30's decor), and fully renovated only about 20 years ago.
The suite we had was clean and up to expectations. Service in the hotel was exemplary. The room was quiet and had magnificent views .
We ate dinner in the Ruapehu Room restaurant in the hotel, and we were very happy with the quality of the decor, furnishings, service and especially the fine dining food.
Excellent value for money in both accommodation and food.
We had no problem getting a late checkout. There is a 2 hour walk (return takes 2 hours) to Taranaki Falls close to the hotel and I recommend taking it.
All in all, the best weekend getaway from Wellington we have yet discovered.
Note : It is an easy drive north from Wellington, unless you you go via Wanganui, as we did, where the Wanganui to National Park road is quite winding. Highway 1 via Wairou is easier driving.

We planned a skiing weekend an booked the Breakfast and evening meal package transport to the Ski fields is just out side. The fields were all closed as it was raining rather than snowing, however, there are some great walks on the door step. So we had a good time and the evening meal and service were great. It was the same menu both days so could have been restricting. The hotel was warm in character, temperature and Staff behavior. The room was great with a view of the mountain for a short while anyway before the weather closed in.
Real old colonial feel to the place with a big log fire and lots of people around on the Saturday. We didn't use the swimming pool which was small and empty while we looked around, the gym and Sauna looked fine to.

Nice weekend stay we will probably repeat in the summer and walk the Tongariro pass.

Room Tip: We asked for a room with a view of the Mountain

It was a real treat to stay here. We booked online with the trip advisor special, and on arrival were upgraded to a mountain view room.

Although very cold outside, the whole interior was toasty warm. Staying here was like stepping back in time, in the huge main area where we enjoyed a drink before dinner there was a pianist playing beautiful music. This room was gorgeous with the huge chandlers and large bay windows.

The service was excellent and all the staff were very friendly. The room was large and very comfortable. The bed was also extremely comfortable.

The only two little negatives were no free wi fi, which we knew before we went, and the walls were not terribly sound proof, as we could hear our neighbours in the bath. This was not really a problem for us though.

I would love to return here, and will do so if I'm ever in the vicinity again.

This hotel is a well known landmark and stands out majestically with the mountain as a backdrop. It's a bit of a trek to get there but it's an imposing ediface on the landscape. It's old but well maintained. Food was amazing. But if you're not a skier, there's not much to do. Unless you ski, 1 nite there is plenty.
