“Great hotel...warm and very well themed”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2013 via mobile

I stayed only one night...great room, which looked out over the mountain and was clean and modern, had a great stay. Heating was sufficient and well required as of the snow :) Took a few mins to ring through to restaurant for room service but other than that a great stay and would go back

Stayed at this hotel on a snow/ski holiday and was a great location with friendly service. The hotel atmosphere, décor and service allow you to take a step back into the past and experience days gone by. The main room has fantastic views and allows you to relax by the fire or the massive windows (with grand views of snow capped mountains), while enjoying a high tea, music on the grand piano or just a beverage. Food is delicious and affordable, buffet breakfast is exceptional and the staff helpful and friendly. Rooms fit in well with the era of the hotel in terms of décor and are clean and comfortable with great views of the mountains. Only complaint was that gym is very basic and the pool/sauna was closed for renovation which was disappointing.

Room Tip: Refurbished rooms are located in the Tongariro wing and are have a more modern bathroom and better v...

I recently had my honeymoon in the hotel and we intend on visiting again. We now have amazing memories to cherish for the rest of our lives. The view of the surrounding mountains was awe inspiring and the snowy backdrop completed the experience. The regal style of early 1900's classic furniture and decor gives it a warm feel.

We just love coming here and sitting beside the big window in the lounge to enjoy the view of Mt Ngarahoe while we sip on a glass of wine. This visit was no exception with pockets of snow on the golf course and the mountains looking spectacular covered in snow - a photographer's dream.
Every room in the older section is different so we were lucky this year to get a kingsize bed in a corner room that opened out to the terrace above the entrance with views over the golf course. The room was spacious but the furniture needed refurbishment and the bathroom is looking a little tired with chips in the handbasin and bath - but so nice to have the luxury of a soak in a hot bath after being in the snow. Despite that the overall ambience is of timeless elegance and everything was clean and comfortable.
Be warned that the central heating in the rooms is quite hot for NZ taste so you don't need winterweight sleepwear.
We had dinner and breakfast in the grand Ruapehu Room and both were excellent.

Since I first saw the Chateau I have wanted to spend time there. From the time you arrive the staff are on hand to handle your every need and are so helpful you can't fault the service. We stayed before the skifield opened which meant there were not very many visitors and it made for a much better experience. It was nice to be able to chat with the staff and experience the ambience without lots of people. The dinner in the restaurant was great and the italian waiter was a delight. Seeing this historic building surrounded by snow was spectacular and of course the backdrop of the stunning mountain peak is never to be forgotten.

Glynis from Kapiti 4 Seasons, for years I have raved to the world about our trips up here...
Sadly this trip June 25th and 26th was last of Sentimental Journey...
SO DIFFERENT for sure...My last report (5 star) had many readers enjoying rave reviews...
We had only a very small group this time and ran it as a loss, hiring another driver because my husband (driver) was in hospital.. Our Kapiti travel group has over 200 active people....
They all pick different trips as we go away every two months with weekly day and theatre trips in between...I did not want to cancel for low numbers as several had never been to Chateau before and others wanted to experience it once again!... I wanted them to have lots of lovely memories...
At our travel meetings and my last Trip Advisor review on Chateau Tongariro I/we had mostly raved about warm floors and breakfast...This time it was the main three course dinner... it was much better than the menu promised (they needed better description) it was delicious!!!
Most of us have been to chateau many times... I think it fell on deaf ears with staff and Chef? but we all agreed the breakfast was not anywhere near the standard... showed left overs to waiter with no response, dried up pastries etc... we were guessing all the fresh supplies were aimed for Saturday( start of the Season)..Food was awful, for Wed and Thurs.. Stale etc...
Ask us about last year and previous... it was the Best of the Best. Last two days 3 out of 10 :(
Worst of all "Nobody cared" Like I said : So different" just trailing along on reputation...
