The owner of Cafe Sandspit is hilariously funny, down to earth and adds genuine character to the restaurant (something many many cafe's around the area lack tremendously), not to mention that he has a brilliant taste in music, before I had even had a coffee or something to eat I found that I was enjoying myself. You step into the clean and comfortable Cafe that sits by an old Warf and looks onto the water, the wooden and warm furnishing is calm and relaxing, with enjoyable varieties of kiwi and international music playing, it is perfect for a dinner and a catch up over some wine or beers with some friends. There is a great outdoor spot for those warmer days too.
The coffee, was superb, I found myself thanking the gods for it, as I had just come back from Kawau without a decent Espresso coffee in weeks. The owner pours a top quality coffee blend that I had never had before called "Altezano Brothers" coffee with great kiwi barista skill.
The coffee and service was so enjoyable I returned with friends for a dinner that evening and we were all hugely impressed, wine, brilliant food, great music, lovely ambiance and a wonderful view made it an almost perfect New Zealand dining experience.
If you are a visitor from overseas staying around the area, or even going past Cafe Sandspit, it would be a sin to not enjoy a meal and a truly wonderful kiwi experience at Cafe Sandspit.
I recommend you visit for Dinner after dark if you are with friends, or make sure to grab a good strong coffee and muffin in the day if you can.
