“Awesome, great location, base yourself here for the whole far north experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2014

New Zealand best kept camping secret, we visited Christmas 2014 the camp managers, staff and Wagener family were lovley. Fishing was spectacular, 4 fish over 12 pound in 2 hours. Wageners put on a huge 90 minute firework display for New Year. Boat ramp at camp made launching a breeze. Shellfish at cnr of East Beach.

A well run camp recommended by a seasoned kiwi camper. If this isnt enough being 10 minutes from both the East and West coast will be. We will be back!

Unfortunately it was raining when we arrived here, but even through the rain we could tell that the location was great. Kayaks available to paddle across the stretch of water to walks that could only be accessed by water - but unfortunately we were staying for one night only and the rain hampered that option. So location was the best part of this and the staff in the office were very welcoming and helpful.

But facilities were bad. Cleaning rotation hadn't been ticked off for 3 days and with the rain the bathrooms were pretty putrid. One toilet overflowing and hadn't been checked the whole time we were there. Kitchen tiny and outside sitting area alright but BBQs not really clean.

I was not happy to have to pay for showers and also the use of the pool. I thought that this was pretty rich actually, so refused to use both. 6km drive into nearest shop - small 4 square supermarket, small café, bottle shop and takeaway fish/burger place which was handy. But nothing else much there.

There seemed to be plenty of holidaying families there with lots of children running around and on bikes, scooters from early in the morning until late at night.

Lots of permanent caravans/tents obviously for people who come there every year. I found the campsite grounds to be extensive but a bit badly planned with everything mixed up.

If I had to I would stay here again just for the location, but facilities need to be better managed and cleaned.

The location of this campsite is spectacular - calm and crystal clear water all around for swimming but also excellent sites for spear fishing and collecting pipi's/cockles too. Our tent site was a bit average - on a slight hill and had a big patch of sand. Luckily our tent is teeny tiny but for any more than two people it wouldn't have been big enough. It was nice and close to the water for swimming though, even if we didn't have a view of it.

The facilities are adequate but not great. You have to pay to use the showers which I find a bit annoying (a few $$ got you a decent length) but at least they were spacious and had nice hot water. The kitchen was really small and didn't have enough cook tops for the number of people and we had to wait for a while to cook our food, and used our camping cooker some nights to avoid the wait.

They hire our kayaks etc which were fantastic and we had heaps of fun exploring the area in these. The staff were nice and were happy to chat about best fishing spots/collecting shellfish etc. The swimming pool is tiny and again, you have to pay to use it...but with such lovely ocean around I have no idea why you'd want to!

I would stay here again for the location but if you're in a larger group or need a decent site I'd talk to them about this before you arrive and make sure you're going to fit.

While staff in the office was nice and supportive, they didn't manage to provide us with a proper powered site for our motorhome, though we made reservation 2 months in advance. They squeezed us in between two permanent campers, so that we hardly could open the doors. Even beyond our experience, the place is not recommendable.

It's not just place what makes your vacation great - it's about the people you meet. Loved our camp neighbours and the staff. Thank you Veronica!
Location is fabulous. If you have a tent you can always find a great quiet spot up or down the hill, by the trees or out in the open. Kitchen is ok. It's small but it was never really busy. They even have a spa and a pool.
We'll be back!

Wagener is located in a great spot, and you can go swimming right by the camp.
It has a nice swimming pool also, and plenty of tent sites.

We went in early March so it wasn't too busy but I can imagine it can get pretty packed in peak season.
Could do with a few more toilets and you do have to pay $1 for a hot shower, but aside from that I'd recommend this campground to anyone who is up that way and doesn't want to stay at a DOC site.

Terrific campsite for families or campervans looking for a base in the far north. Friendly and well organised campsite, with kayaks, sandboards, bikes, etc available for hire, a small but popular pool, and a great range of tent and campsites from coastal to shaded to sundrenched. Pizza oven! Bbq! Beach! Beach nearby is reasonably good, and if you've got access to any kind of boat, you'll have an awesome experience out around the heads.

The bad? Facilities are clean and functional, but not *anywhere* near big enough for a campsite of this size. Not enough showers, not enough kitchen.

I'd recommend it for someone looking for a "time out" holiday, or international tourists wanting a base for a day or two to explore the top of the North.
