“Golf Weekend”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2013

My husband and I stayed at Carrington 27th September and were pretty disappointed with what we expected to be an "up there" resort with 4+ stars. Whilst the location is stunning I'm afraid the accommodation and restaurant are pretty ho hum with a fridge in the room but nothing in it, had to ask for water for the room and when we went for a swim there was a palm tree that had blown over and was still in the pool on Saturday the day after. We had been told it had been sold and that was clear to see from the lack of maintenance to the buildings which are showing signs of wear. The restaurant is a beautiful setting but the food did not match. The golf course whilst dramatic and challenging suffers badly with lying water. I'm afraid this is not the resort it was purported to be and needs to be updated to compete with Bay of Island accommodation a lot cheaper than this

We stayed at the Peppers Carrington Resort from 7 - 12 July. It was the most delightful winter break and we loved it. The room in the lodge was spacious, clean and well appointed with glorious views over the golf course and out to sea (+ wonderful sunsets). The hotel staff were very helpful and the food, wine and service in the restaurant were all great. The chef went the extra mile to ensure that our meals were excellent, even producing a special menu just for us on our last night.

The location is truly beautiful and not to be missed are the two horseshoe bays at the end of the road. The golf course is well kept, with excellent greens and tee placements to suit all handicaps. The undulating fairways were a bit of a challenge for me and I used a cart the second time. It was a bit wet in places but not excessively so given that it was mid winter.

We also did the approx 90 minute drive to Cape Reinga on a perfect day and the scenery was wonderful. At the end of the road to Cape Reinga there is a sealed path down to the lighthouse and it was well worth the effort - another gorgeous place to be.

We would definitely stay there again!

Room Tip: All rooms looked to be good but the ones overlooking the golf course have the best views.

Carrington seems to charge too much for what it is.   The  lack of modern features makes it seem this has had no update to keep it in line with its competitors.

We stayed in a Villa. They have great views over the golf course to the sea. Whilst clean and well maintained the equipment is just getting a little old - there is a TV and a player but it's a VHS tape player and the older style CRT tube TV.  Same with fittings, roller blinds on the windows etc  As a base for a family in this part of the east coast they are comfortable enough with washing machine and dryer in the garage (where you could leave beach gear) a couple of bathrooms, full size fridge, stove top and oven. The pots and pans could do with an update though as the fry pan is an omelet  size pan.  The tennis court, gym and pool provide options apart from the beach.

We stayed in the "off" season and were the only guests. The restaurant would open on request but only if we confirmed we wanted to eat there - a point worth considering if you enjoy a bustling restaurant with a vibe.  We catered for ourselves.  There is a small store down the road that holds a few basics and a take away shop is in the same group. The winery was closed for the winter.  The area itself has charm and beaches to enjoy in winter or summer. The walk to the beach from the resort provides vistas and takes about an hour. And there is the golf course to play for those inclined.

Given the small number of rooms there is scope to personalize a guests stay to a much larger extent, a focus on "Hosting" would aid this approach.  Whilst the staff we met were pleasant we left with a feeling that had been there or not it would have made no difference to the beat of the place.

Overall a relaxing stay. The accommodation was up to the Peppers standard - very quiet and the views were great. Food was great on both nights that we stayed there. As it was in the winter season, we had a very personal service. Each night the kitchen prepared a lovely cheese platter to take to our room. Thought it was great having an award winning Head Chef cook just us breakfast. Enjoyable stay.

Had a great golf course, but that is not why we went there. It is a very good location for touring the area including going up to Cape Reinga (do not miss the bus ride on 90 mile beach). Had dinner there each of two nights, very good, service excellent, wines excellent. Wish we had had more than two days to explore the place itself. Nice décor, sort of colonial in feel, as if one is in the South Pacific, and as it turns out, that is actually the case. No negatives.

Room Tip: Corner room has windows on two sides, so can sit inside and enjoy the evening breezes.

We just stayed one night but it was outstanding.all the staff were friendly and helpful.Room was well appointed and quite big.Dinner was excellent with unobtrusive service. We didn't play golf which is a major feature of the hotel but did try the wines. The 2007 Toa was great value at just $24.
The reds were v good as was the Chardonnay
We would rate this hotel a 10 and the restaurant a 9
Highly recommended

3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2013

We stayed for 2 nights at the Carrington. Perfectly situated, magnificient views and very nice rooms. We had booked a room in the lodge and it was perfect. Nice views over the golf course and the sea. A really good golf course. All in all perfect conditions to create a five star resort. But unfortunately it is closer to a three star, du to the exceptionally un-professional way the property is being run. Check in at the pro shop, no help with the luggage, no complementary wifi in the room, no staff after 6 pm,, a so called Kiwi Roast dinner, which had nothing to do with roasted food, no service when playing golf, no service on departure and a bill, which were incorrect. Dear Carrington: Simply not good enough or are you in the proces of closing down?

Room Tip: At the current time, I can not recommend you to stay here
