“Nice but old”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2014

We stayed one night and it was very pleasant. The room was very old, but the price was right. Was expecting to cook in room but found out that it wasn't a room to cook in and did not want to pay hotel prices for breakfast as we only are small eaters. The room was like the house I grew up in from the 70's, very dark and old fashion. Would of liked to have spa and sauna but found out that you had to share it with others. As we had no togs we missed out. Why tell your customers to book if they cannot have privacy. The spa room was packed with young people as the spa was across the hall from where we were staying. They were running up and down the corridor until 9pm that night.

Room Tip: If you want your car outside your room, get one where you can

The staff was very welcoming and helpful with providing information about local places to eat.
The hotel is about 15 minutes' walk from the town center with all it's restaurants or a few minutes by car.

The room was just as other's said like back in the 70's.Shower head very low and old.The TV was old fashioned like grandpa.

Because just for one night so just ok.

Try down town: Bushmans Hut Restaurant very good

It is very old and smell bad when you enter the room. The bed is cold and not comfortable as the room is damp and mouldy. The staff/housekeeper was very rude to us when we asked her why they didn't make up our bed after we came back from tour around 5pm.

We won't stay again! It will be the last choice if you really want to stay in Kaitaia and you could not find anywhere else!

Room Tip: Higher floor might be better.

This hotel was likely built in the 1970s and as such has a lost in time feel to it, but on the whole it is a very affordable hotel with a prime location for exploring the far North. The service was efficient although not overly informative. The rooms were reasonably clean with the odd stain and cobweb. This did not bother me but could bother some. The room facilities all worked very well and they really contributed to making our holiday better. The only gripe I have is that the spa pool is in the same room as the 'gym' and other facilities. The hotel claims to have a booking system for the spa but it wouldn't really feel like you had privately booked it out if someone came in a started pumping away on the weights. It would just be weird. Other than that, the Northerner hotel made for a very good holiday experience. It also sits in a secluded part of town which, no doubt, made the stay more comfortable.

Felt like we were back in the 70's. Shower head very low & room needs a makeover to modernise it a bit. Would be nice to upgrade to queen size beds.
Restaurant wasn't open night we were there which was frustrating. Spa in with the gym which isn't very relaxing.

After travelling from Auckland to Kaitaia, all we wanted to do was sit, relax, have a hot shower and eat.
Booking in the staff are really good, they explained everything they could, gave us our free internet access passwords and pointed out the best places to eat.
The rooms are best described as functional. Everything worked - but is old, like think 1970's with brown glass, brown paint, small brown and beige tiles in the bathrooms.
The bed though was very comfortable and the shower hot with freebie toiletries.
Tea and coffee facilities are in the room and a fridge for cold drinks (there is a dairy not far away).
Breakfast is very basic (toast and jam, cereal and tea/coffee). If you want cooked breakfast you have to book it the day before.
The gym room is also basic but has a sauna and a spa pool.
In short, excellent service at check in and out, functional if dated rooms and hotel, and poor for eating in the hotel (having said that we ate out for evening meals).

Room Tip: Get a more expensive room with Air Conditioning, a colleagues room was stiflingly hot with only a st...

We stayed two nights at this hotel so we could do the day tour to the Ninety Mile Beach and Cape Reinga. The staff was very welcoming and helpful with providing information about local places to eat. The room was adequate and the bathroom good with some complimentary basic toiletries. The TV was old fashioned with a tiny screen and poor reception. The sauna, spa and gym room had an unpleasant musty scent and the spa's water didn't look clean so we didn't use it. The hotel is about 15 minutes' walk from the town center with all it's restaurants and shops and there's a Pak'nSave within walking distance or a few minutes by car.
