“Very good!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2013

Only stayed here one night to enjoy hot water beach and the cathedral cove walk, wich starts just behind this lodge. It is a lovely place to stay. I stayed in the backpackers part wich was really good, nice communal area. Friendly staff and free muffins!

Were roadtripping the Coromandel Peninsula with two friends and found the Tatahi Lodge a beautiful, lush, quaint place.
We had a very interesting experience which wasn't unfortunately all good... We baked and cooked dinner with my two friends at the communal kitchen when the very drunken housekeeping staff (WWOOFers?) got to the lodge (where they apparently lived) and started eating away our cooking without us knowing while we were having dinner... Unbelievably rude! We were shocked! And as we're relaxing after dinner the dishes were awaiting and the manager comes and tells us off for not cleaning up. We told him politely that we would like to relax after dinner, sit down for a while and then clean up. This was not good enough for him, he wanted things done NOW and made himself very clear. Well unfortunately things got very heated up and he insulted and verbally abused my male friends. As a girl I think I got off easy, it was some sort of male ego on the loose.

Anyway, the lodge was absolutely beautiful and stunning, loved the homey feel of it, it was not expensive and location was brilliant.
Unfortunataly I still cringe thinking about that confrontation that went on. And staff that eats guests food.. Never got over it.

When you visit do enjoy the beautiful surroundings and lovely cosy rooms though.

I stayed at the Tatahi Lodge with my parents in the self-contained chalet and considering they describe themselves as a backpackers hostel I was slightly taken aback by the impressive accommodation! Our chalet had its on driveway, private gardens and barbecue. The bedrooms were very large and spacious and the living area was really spacious with comfy sofas, tv, dining table and kitchen area. A brief stroll from the beach and right by a shop to get supplies. All in all excellent value for money, very clean, well serviced and you couldn't really ask for friendlier staff.

The staff are friendly and helpful. The kitchen is quite big so their is lots of room to cook, and they have a space rack for communal use, which is great. The lodge is very clean and quite modern and has a homely feel. while i was there everybody was very friendly and i was made very comfortable. We spent 1 night in a 4 bed dorm room and 2 nights in a private double, both were great, however the walls are very thin so you could hear everything through them, which can be annoying at night.

Room Tip: The dorm room nearest the common room has the TV on the same all which is quite loud, but it is turn...

We stayed here for two nights on a trip to the Coromandel peninsula from Auckland. We loved being so close to Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach. The hotel is lovely, the owners helpful but not overbearing. The two bedroom cottage was perfect for us (a couple and a friend). It was really nice to have the outdoor space when returning from the beach. It was considerate of them to provide towels for the beach and the shovel for Hot Water Beach. Literally next door is a little cafe and restaurant which is very convenient.

Rented a studio apartment for 4 nights. Just perfect. Slap bang in the middle of Hahei, a lovely little quiet beachy place, with all the (low rise) shops and eateries basically on the doorstep of the accommodation, and the beach itself just over 5 mins walk away. Reminded me of Hanalei in Kauai.

Helpful front desk staff. Studio had a nice modern look, a very big comfy bed, a spotless bathroom and oodles of towels. Came with a wooden table on a grassy area outside the patio doors too, for breakfast or whatever. Some limited cutlery and crockery and fridge provided too. And my kettle did fit in the sink.

Other nice touches were the beach towel, and spade for hot water beach. HWB and Cathedral cove are musts in the area, though don't expect it to be quiet. Cathedral Cove has its own park and ride scheme! Say no more.

Others mentioned thin walls between studios, and yes I think they were, but my neighbours were quiet so not a problem for me.

Found this place after an internet search, and certainly it seemed to be good value compared to other nearby options.

Would definitely stay again.

We were planned to finish our long NZ holiday in the Coromandel Peninsula by reading, sunbathing, etc.. We decided to stay in the Tatahi Lodge and booked a double. As this was in early april, the Lodge was empty and as others, we were also offered to stay in the motel unit, for the same price.

The unit was awesome, seemed freshly built, with 2 large rooms (2-2 bunks in each), a really comfortable lounge, with separated reading area and spacious, well-equipped kitchen. We were on our own for one night, and with 2 others (one guy seemed to work there and a girl who became his girlfriend while we were there :D )

Cathedral Cove is in walking distance, so as the amazing beach. Hot water beach is 30 mins drive away.

However our sunbathing was ruined by the weather, we can recommend this place with good heart.

One little drawback: the TV in the lounge is on a thin wall, so if your room is on the other side of that wall, your sleep may be disturbed if others watching the TV in the lounge. Earplug can help of course.
