Yet another great camping experience at Hahei. It is our second time for new year camping here and we have put in for next year as well. You couldn't get any better with the location. Its simply beautiful scenery with safe swimming and good kayaking. The campground itself is well maintained and staff very friendly and helpful.
We never used the kitchen facilities but the toilet facilities are looking a bit tired and a new toilet/shower block wouldn't go amiss as there is too few showers for the amount of people that inhabit the camp at peak times. Getting a warm shower can also be challenging at times if you go at peak times in the morning and early evening.
Word of warning (not regarding the campground). Take as much food as you can manage as the only store for miles which is a 5 minute walk from the camp is very expensive. We learnt this the first time there and came well stocked this time.
Also love the fact the rubbish is collected right in front of your site every day. Keeps the flys away and the rubbish from being banked up and overflowing.
Overall though we love the place and will keep coming back. Highly recommended.

Thank you for your response. We all work really hard to ensure our guests enjoy their stay. The convenient local store offer most emergency supplies. We do have plans for a new ablution block. We are continually looking at ways to improve the camp, and appreciate the location we're in couldn't be better! We look forward to your next visit.

The holiday park is in a fantastic location with a beautiful beach a very short walk over the sand dunes and Cathedral Cove within a reasonable walking or kayaking distance. Unfortunately this is the highlight of the holiday park with the rest of the site in need of some attention to bring it up to being able to justify the almost $100 per night that is charged for a patch of grass. There is only one shower and kitchen block for the whole campsite, resulting in it not being very clean by mid afternoon, or having ample hot water available for showers and dish washing. The grass was also getting rather long with no sign of anyone doing any cutting during the week that we stayed there. I know that this is peak season and as a result it is very busy, but you are also charged accordingly for staying at this time of year and as a result i do not feel that it was value for money. It is not enough to use the location as justification for the high charges.

We appreciate your comments. We do have plans to build a new ablution block. Hahei is a popular choice, and we do run at maximum capacity over New Year. The toilet blocks are checked 3 times daily, and we work really hard to keep the facilities clean. This is not always possible during absolute peak. Maintenance staff are available to mow sites in most circumstances. Occasionally sites do get missed when guests depart. We have gas, solar, and electric for heating the water. It is rare that hot water runs out, even over peak season. We haven't raised our rates in over 3 years, and feel our prices are in par with similar resort types.

We stayed here for 2 nights in a garden studio (#8- end unit) in the Cathedral Cove Villas.
We loved it! Although we didnt face the beach, it was quiet, private and a short walk up a flight of stairs and you see the gorgeous view and beach in front of you! There was hardly any one there. We took the Kayak trip with Cathedral Cove Kayaks..excellent, especially enjoyed the fresh hot cocoa & cookies they provide on the beach! Our studio was perfect, bed comfy, great shower and front deck..free use of the private laundry room too was a plus after 3 weeks of travelling. One of our favorite places we stayed on the North Island!

Great! We highly recommend the Kayak tour to guests. The coffee and hot chocolate are café quality. The Sunrise tour is definitely a staff favorite! Studio 8 is a popular choice for those wanting privacy, especially outside of peak season! The only way to beat the proximity to the beach is rent a villa. Thank you for taking the time to write such a positive review.

We camped here for a week over Christmas/New Year. The location is absolutely beautiful. The white sandy beach was about 200m from our site which was just great!
We enjoyed the great facilities with kitchens, bathrooms etc all spotlessly clean despite the fact that they were running at full capacity.
The site is close to Hot Water beach and Cathedral Cove and a short walk to Hahei shops where you will find a decent cafe and a decent range of shops, including a great icecream shop which we visited regularly!
There were loads of other campers who had been visiting Hahei for 20 odd years and were very clear that there is no way they'd go elsewhere. I tend to agree and we are definitely considering a return trip next year.

We booked a kitchen cabin for 6 nights. On checking in the reception was busy and while waiting I (and several other people) were unfortunate enough to have to listen to one of the receptionists treat a foreign tourist like a complete idiot when he asked a question regarding his booking (note to staff: if someone asks a question about something you've told them, repeating your original statement only louder and louder until you are yelling at them is obviously not going to help). The cabin was fine and just as expected however the state of the shared toilets/shower block in the mid-afternoon was not. They were filthy, toilet paper on the floor, poo on the walls and while I understand how busy holiday time is I would expect that in peak season they might be cleaned twice a day instead of just first thing in the morning.
The beach just over the dunes is the best bit about this camp - obviously having a monopoly by being the only holiday camp in town means they know holidaymakers don't have many other options so it's a case of put up or shut up.
I wouldn't pay to stay here again.

Hi Trudi. We appreciate you taking the time express your thoughts.
We know we are in an extraordinary location and our intention is to provide a positive and enjoyable holiday for all our guests. It is disappointing this wasn't your experience. Our ablution blocks are checked 3 times a day. Unfortunately not all guests have the same hygiene standards. This is obviously out of our control. In regard to reception staff attitude, this has been noted, and will be followed up with further training if necessary. Holiday makers do have a choice of where to stay. We are fortunate a lot of our guests have been camping for generations.

Thank you for another fantastic camping trip. A small amount of flooding with heavy rainfalls one night, but we managed to dry out quickly and then spent the rest of our week soaking up the sunshine on one of the best beaches in NZ. Did a bit of kayaking around to Cathedral Cove and around the rocky islands and outcrops off Hahei beach. As always the campsite was just great, really friendly neighbours and an excellent spot in A block. Will definitely be back at Easter!
Short drive to Whitianga either via Cooks Beach and the ferry or directly on the State Highway. Hahei General Store has everything you need and is a short walk from the campsite. My only suggestion would be to add more freezers as these were limited to 1 small freezer. Toilets and bathrooms were adequate.

Room Tip: The blocks closer to the beach are obviously better - we usually camp in C or D block but were very...

Thanks for visiting us another year. Luckily we didn't get hit as hard as the neighbouring beaches during the downpours! We love our local beach and highly recommend the kayak tour around the islands. The friendly atmosphere within the camp keeps the same families being welcomed back year after year. We do have future plans for another ablution block in the future. Secure freezer space is available. We are hoping to provide more accessible camp freezers in the future.

Friendly staff and a great spot! Inspite of a drop or two of rain (!) we had a lovely time and with small kids the facilities made the holiday really easy. Amazing to see rubbish bags collected from the tent every day - we'll be back thank you :-)

Thank you for your positive comments! Hahei was more fortunate during the brief downpour than some local beaches. Our ground staff are kept extra busy during Peak season to ensure the campers have clean surroundings. We'd love to see you back.
