“A dream come true!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 14, 2013

On a recent visit to Ecuador, I had the distinct pleasure of staying at Casa del Sol for one week. Located on "the point," this cozy hotel was exactly what my boyfriend and I had been looking for. Not only was it the perfect location (far enough from the craziness of town, but close enough to walk - and just steps from the beach), but the rooms were bright, clean and comfortable, and the food was the best we'd had in Ecuador (everything is fresh, healthy and homemade from scratch). The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, and the vibe of other guests and local visitors was very much reminiscent of a "family" atmosphere. Even though the town is quite close, we found we preferred to spend our evenings on the patio of Casa del Sol (drinking cold, cheap beers) chatting with other travelers and the "locals" who have now made Casa del Sol their home-away-from-home ... which is always a great sign!
The owner, Tamara Allers, went out of her way to make sure we were well looked after - and she couldn't have been more generous, caring or hospitable if we'd asked. It's no wonder that people seem to flock to this place. With everything they have to offer, and the quality of service they provide - there really is no other place I would ever recommend. If you're planning a trip to Montanita or surrounding area, this is the best (the ONLY) place you should stay!

I don't like writing reviews and this is my first one, but I felt I had to write this review. The Casa del Sol is an amazing hotel that offers great food, great service, and wonderful hospitality. I was quite ill for 7 days and the staff made sure that I was comfortable through the illness. The staff was quite friendly and ensured that the guests received every item requested. The rooms were quite nice and the bathrooms are large with tremendous space available. This hotel is a five-star hotel in my opinion and you will enjoy every moment of your vacation.

Casa del Sol is a great place located outside of the noisy and boisterous town of Montanita. This place attracts tourists from all over Ecuador and all over the world. Bustling with surfers and people looking to party all day every day. Casa del Sol is a breath of fresh air. Everything in Montanita is more expensive than anywhere else in Ecuador because of the tourist trade there. For a good price however you get a wonderfully quiet and tranquil atmosphere with a delicious breakfast every morning (with REAL coffee, not instant) and a safe place to land when you come back from town or the beach. A hop across the street and you are at the beach. Bars and restaurants are easily accessible. It is a great place to meet people from all over the world and I recommend it highly.

I stayed at Casa del Sol recently with two friends and although we were very excited to stay there after checking out the website and reading all the great reviews, I am sad to say that we were incredibly disappointed by our time there, especially because of the unclean rooms and hostile environment.

Casa del Sol is quite expensive - we paid $25 for a room with three beds that was very basic and had no other furniture, and a private bathroom. Considering the high cost of the room (more expensive than anywhere else we had stayed whilst travelling across south America) we expected something a little bit nicer and were disappointed to find something so basic. The bunk beds were very old and creaky and there wasn't even a ladder for the person sleeping on the top bunk to use.

Our major issue with the room was the bathroom - there is no other word for it, it was disgusting. It was dirty from the moment we arrived and obviously very old - the shower doors were broken, the floor was chipped and cracked, it was mouldy, the shower pressure was terrible and you had to choose between freezing cold water and boiling hot. Not only this, but the shower didn't drain properly so you were forced to stand in filthy water as you showered. The worst part was that a rotten sewage smell emerged after every shower and filled up the whole room to the point where it was unbearable to be in there. The smell was there the whole 4 days we stayed there and we avoided the room as much as possible as a result.

Not only this, but there were cockroaches all over the room after dark. I understand bugs are inevitable in a beachside location but we have never had trouble with cockroaches before in anywhere we've stayed. My friend was really sick one night and spent the night throwing up in a cockroach-infested bathroom with a smell that was bad enough to make you gag. Not a pleasant experience at all for her.

The room we could have dealt with if it wasn't for the extremely hostile attitude of the owners, who from the moment we arrived did absolutely nothing to make us feel welcome. We didn't even get a smile from the owners brother (Greg I believe) when we arrived, he only sullenly showed us to our room and told us nothing about the hostel and it's services, which is fairly standard when you're showing new guests around. The majority of the people staying there when we were there were friends of the owner, Tamara, and were mostly American surfers. Being girls from Australia, we immediately felt out of place. When we walked back into the hostel after a day at the beach the group would stare at us intimidatingly, barely say a word to us and make us feel as if they were talking about us behind our back. This may sound petty, but in a small hostel with only a certain amount of guests it is very uncomfortable when you are made to feel isolated and unwelcome. This happened everytime we walked in and out of the hostel and when we sat in the main area, even after we made an effort to chat to the guests and the owners and spend some time at the communal bar. Tamara was dismissive when we went up to ask questions and gave the impression that she didn't want to talk to any of us, only her American surfer friends. After reading all the reviews that said how lovely and welcoming Tamara and Greg were, we were surprised and disappointed to find ourselves in such a hostile environment. We wanted to move hostels after one night but didn't think we would find anywhere with free space during high season.

The one positive comment I can make about casa del sol is that the local staff who are employed there are absolutely lovely and were always friendly, helpful and welcoming. I just wish we could say the same about the owners. The breakfast cooked by the chef every morning was also delicious, much better than anything we had seen before at other places.

Overall I would not recommend staying there unless you are American, a surfer, or a friend of the owner. It seems you are only welcomed into the casa del sol "family" if you are the type of person they deem cool enough to talk to.

First off, I am very sorry you did not have a great time here at Casa del Sol.
If there were problems with your room, (ie the bathroom), it would have been great if you could have let us know so we could remedy the situation or move you rooms. Both were viable options and perhaps would have made your stay more comfortable but nothing was said to us.

As for you not feeling like part of the 'family', I also apologize. I don't feel we are less welcoming to one person or another. It takes effort from both the hotel and the guests to create that experiance and everyone is going to take something different away from it. We are not biased to certain guests, but most of our guests tend to stay for 2 weeks or longer and may connect in a different way after spending that much time with us.

However, thank you for you review and will take your suggestions it into account for the future.

Saludos

I stayed here for over a week, and enjoyed every minuet, the staff is amazing, the quality of people i met was top notch...... healthy food, yoga classes, perfect location in front of a surf break. rooms were very clean, hot water, free amazing breakfast, free wifi. Great bar to relax at, it is far away from the centre of town so you can get a good nights sleep also. Great atmosphere to relax and meet people, Felt right at home and the staff makes you feel like family...can not wait to go back....stay there you will not be disappointed ...

I initially booked into Casa Del Sol for three nights based on a recommendation from a fellow traveller, but ended up staying seven. The owners and staff are so fun and fantastic - it's a good place for a solo traveller to base themselves, especially if you want to be away from the 24/7 chaos of Montanita but close enough to walk along the beach for a crazy night of maracuja mojitos and salsa dancing in the street. The room I stayed in was fairly basic but had everything I needed including hot water, a hammock to sleep off any hangovers, and was right over the road from the beach. Highly recommended!

First off, Casa del Sol is a nice and clean place to stay with most amenities a traveler will need. However, the prices are quite high for not being on the beach. Unlike many people that visit Montanita we originally planned to stay for 10 days and left after 4. If you are an ACTUAL surfer, as in surfed for more than 10 years and can do more than just stand up, Montanita is NOT the place to stay. It's always 2 feet smaller than everywhere else...why is it the "surfing capital of Ecuador"? I have no idea. I go on vacation to surf, and hang at the beach...although Casa del Sol is nice, it is not on the beach. For about $20 less a night we stayed 30 minutes up the coast where the waves were way better and our room was literally on the sand with a patio, private hammocks, and beautiful views. Casa del Sol has NO views, and hammocks outside some rooms that provide a view of tables. If you are learning to surf, have no desire to hike or explore outdoor activities like fishing around the place you stay, and want to get wasted all the time...then Montanita is perfect for you. Casa del Sol is safe and away from the crowds, and the owners are nice...but I would only choose it for a 2 night partying getaway, not a vacation.
