My wife and I stayed at the Pousada Mariola in March 2011. We had some difficulty in getting to the property but once we arrived it was an absolute pleasure from start to finish. We arrived after midnight but Gilmar greeted us with a broad smile and showed us to our room, and introduced us to the pousada and the surrounding area which was great. After a great night sleep in the huge and very comfy bed we then enjoyed breakfast in the main property's dining area and conversed with some of the other guests which was nice.
The property comprises of (I think) 8 seperate pousada's set on a steep mountain, all having a wonderful view of the ocean and Sao Paulo's mainland. Our property was at the rear, and had a wonderful view from the balcony. The room itself was large, and barn-like which we thought was great. We also didn't come across a single mosquito or bug which is rare in properties of this type, so another BIG plus point. The swimming pool has been built within the past couple of years and only invites you to take a dip, especially when the weather is hot and sunny!!
Ilha Bela has a variety of exceptional beaches and is voted the 3rd best city (in this case island) for beaches in the whole of Brasil, according to Guia Quatro Rodas's beach guide to Brasil (2011/12). Fortunately, Pousada Mariola is in a great location to many of the suberb beaches, including Curral and Juliao (Prainha). Another notable beach is Bonete, only accessible by foot (takes a laborious 4 hours to walk there, so if attempting it, start early and take plenty of chocolate to keep going) or by boat, however, Bonete has been voted the 8th best beach in Brasil (also according to GuiaQuatroRodas's beach guide to Brasil 2011/12). The pousada is also very close to the lively part of Ilhabela where you'll find the restaurants to fill up and people watch. If staying for a week, it may be worth getting the boat back to the mainland and enjoying some other local towns, such as Sao Sebastiao, Caraguatatuba, Ubatuba or even Paraty (150km away but a lovely place).
My wife and I absolutely loved our stay at Pousada Mariola, despite the weather being unkind for much of our stay (though it was during Brasil's winter!) and we can only recommend this wonderful place to all, and thank the wonderful staff for making our weekend's stay so memorable.
