“Wonderful place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2013

We were treated very personally, the room was wonderful, breakfast was delicious, and we'd recommend this B&B to anyone wanting a nice place to stay in New Bedford. There are three rooms in this Bed and Breakfast, so the owners can treat everyone individually. It is only a few blocks from the museums, the Seamen's Bethel, and the New Bedford waterfront. The home is located in a very nice old neighborhood. It has been decorated with great taste, including the stenciling on the walls. Stan has provided a number of books in the rooms, including books written by Melville and books about Melville.

Room Tip: All rooms are fine.

The house is alright. It's nothing special but clean and somewhat comfortable. Not really any desk or much sitting room to speak of in the room. The man running it was kind even though he was a little awkward. He made sure to have a great breakfast every morning at 8 for us and would try to chat with us a little bit and make sure everything was alright. We did have to ask him to do the room since he wasn't the first two days. Overall it was a decent experience although a few details didn't earn it five stars.

New Bedford is an odd town. We were here for a wedding in nearby Dartmouth and made the trip into a Melville pilgrimage. We got here from the Berkshires where we'd visited Arrowhead the place HM wrote Moby Dick. New Bedford is spooky, run down and ultimately fascinating. The old whaling captain's houses of which this is one are quirky, some even feel haunted from outside let alone in. Stan and his partner have made this a great little place to stay, embracing the narrative of the area and adding their own ideas. Stan himself is a lovely host. He may seem awkward at first (reading below others have said this) but he's a really sweet man who when he cracks a smile really exudes a quiet warmth. If you're going to New Bedford give the Marriott a miss and stay with Stan. He does a mean Brocolli and basil omelette too.

My wife and I have stayed several times in the Douglass room, a perfect accommodation in every detail. Ron and Stan are wonderful hosts, kind, friendly and attentive. Breakfast is incredible, prepared with the best local fresh organic ingredients. Their B&B has obviously been decorated with great care to preserve the historical elegance while providing every comfort. They are also expert at bodywork, and can give you a sophisticated treatment that will leave you feeling great, if not better! No hesitation in recommending Melville House - if it were a hotel it would be a five-star.

Room Tip: All of the rooms are elegant and comfortable.

The Melville House is located in a quiet corner of New Bedford, but still in walking distance from nice bars and restaurants such as Freestones.
The rooms are beautiful and spacious but be aware that in early spring there're not really anywhere to stay except in your room since the patio is closed.
And then there's the breakfast. This is by far the most superior breakfast we have enjoyed for years!!!

Room Tip: You could always ask for a discount if they have available rooms and you can come on short notice.

My boyfriend and I stayed here August 2011 for one night to attend a wedding near New Bedford. I describe it as awkward because when we arrived at our predetermined time, we rang the bell and no one answered. We called the number for the b&b as we stood at the door and we were told Stan would be sent right down. He let us in and told us our room wouldnt be ready for another 15-20 minutes- thats fine we say, and sit in the gorgeous sun room.
He leads us up to our room, which is very cute and clean, and we remind him that we havent paid for the room yet, is there some place we have to sign in? After that is all taken care of, he asks us what time breakfast is- is 8:30 okay? sure we tell him and head off for the wedding.
The next morning we wake up at 8 (after a wedding!) to be on time for breakfast. Down in the sun room we awkwardly try to figure out the coffee machine and poke around like we're in someone elses kitchen. Stan comes in telling us he overslept and goes to find us some food- I found a few blueberry scones? and that is our 'gourmet' breakfast that we've read reviews about. We never met or caught a glimpse of Ron, the alleged charismatic chef/owner.
All in all, it was a nice space and it would be perfect under the right conditions. This was just our experience and it fell a little short of our expectations.

I recently enjoyed a stay at the Melville House B&B. The owner was accommodating knowing my late arrival. I stayed in the Douglas room. A comfortable and spacious room. The touch of a homemade chocolate chip cookie is one of the small things that set this B&B out from others. A great part of the stay is breakfast. As a very active, health conscious person I am particular about meals. I eat organic and this is what the Melville House serves. Eggs are farm fresh, strawberries and cantaloupe were local, and fresh squeezed organic orange juice was from the local gourmet food store Sid Wainers. During my three night stay Trader Joe’s organic fait trade coffee was brewed and I was served fruit as a starter served over an oven pancake or as a fruit cup. I was served a broccoli omelet with an incredible sauce, a frittata and on my final morning I asked for oatmeal, but this oatmeal was far from plain oats. It was covered with dried fruit and nuts from a local health food store then pure maple syrup was drizzled on top. There is not a place in New Bedford that serves this type of breakfast and I have been going to New Bedford for seven years. The solarium is one of my favorite room in the B&B. I wouldn’t stay anywhere else.
