I grew up in New Bedford & return frequently to visit my parents. I love visiting the Fort. Its a big loop, nicely paved path. The path is so nice my husband & I like to roller blade on it. The ocean is on 3 sides of the fort. Gorgeous ocean views, big grassy areas for kite flying, picnics, Frisbee, walking the dog. Small beach areas. Unfortunately bathrooms only during peak season now. They had port o potties at one time, but some kids set them on fire so they were removed. There are 2 play ground areas for kids, also a hamburger, ice cream place. A great walk out pier many like to fish off of. The seagulls get their quahogs & drop them on the pavement to break them open & expose the meat. If you like to feed the seagulls, this is a great place to do it. The museum is small but very interesting. It gives a lot of the history & has some great pictures. I feel pretty safe here as its open & there are usually a lot of people walking & exercising. Lots of benches for rest as well.
