We've just returned from one of the best family vacations "ever" thanks to the service, staff and environs of the Fairmont Kea Lani. I read other Trip Advisor reviews before booking this hotel and would say that the negatives were either expected; like the expense of the resort or the greedy birds during outside dining. Hawaii is expensive, people!! Know that before you go. As for the birds, cover your food if it is left unattended!
We decided that we wanted the big resort experience but also wanted the option of preparing light snacks and dinner in the evening. The Fairmont Kea Lani 2 bedroom villa was the perfect option for our family of four; 2 adults and 2 teenagers. The villa was terrific; 2 floors of living space, full kitchen, washer/dryer, gas grill and plunge pool. They even provided kitchen & cooking basics like salt & pepper, paper towels, aluminum foil, plastic wrap and clothes detergent! The Fairmont package also included breakfast and a rental car which was a great deal.
We felt that everyone we met was truly invested in making sure that we had the vacation of a lifetime. We were always greeted with a smile and by our names. Expect to pay extra for pool cabanas ($95/day + 1 day free) and beach umbrellas. Register for The President's Club on the Fairmont website and you're eligible for complimentary Internet access during your stay! The Concierge Desk was very helpful in booking day trips including, our favorite, a day out on the Maui Magic, island tour & snorkeling off of Molokini. I'd highly recommend this resort and would stay at the Fairmont Kea Lani again without hesitation.

I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone with kids. since all rooms are suites, you are not constantly on top of each-other.
pros: bathrooms are huge, hotel is well maintained, most of the staff is friendly, and they <mostly> don't nickle and dime you for everything
cons:some of the staff like to make up their own rules when it comes to charging you. ex. our 2.5 year old likes to drink milk first thing in the morning. at checkin we were told that kids under 5 eat free and we can order/pick up food for them at anytime from any of the restaurants (pretty standard for a high class resort as this). so the first day, my husband picked up milk for him in the morning no problem. the next day, i went down to pick up milk for him and the frizzy haired cow (aka hostess) condescendingly told me that they have to see the child drink the milk in front of them (implying that i was somehow trying to steal the milk and drink it myself). on another occasion at dinner, we were charged $8 for our son's drink. when we asked the waiter about it, he told us "kids eat free not drink free", nobody else charged us for our son's drinks so i don't know what that was all about. other minor grievances, not sure how well the bathrooms in the room are cleaned on a daily basis. $20 delivery charge for room service - what is that about. $30/person breakfast buffet - ludicrous.

This is a great place for families!! The suite set up is perfect for 2 adults and 2 kids (not sure you could squeeze more kids in or not). The place is expensive, so bring your wallet. Couple of tips...

* Valet parking is $20 per day. Self parking is FREE.
* The breakfast buffet is good, but not great. I preferred the coffee shop (Cafe Caio) that has breakfast sandwiches and coffee.
* If it is crowded, splurge on the cabana. It holds your spot all day in a nice shady location, plus you get unlimited water and non-alcoholic beverages (again, very kid friendly).
* The Spa is fantastic! The Lomi Lomi massage was one of the best I'd ever had...well worth the money.
* Skip the Hair/Nail salon. It has nice Aveda products, but that's about it.
* The rooms have dorm-size refrigerators and microwaves, so buy snacks at the local grocery store to keep in your room.
* Ask about the drink of the day...usually delicious and a few bucks less.
* The kid activities on the lawn are pretty lame, except for the lei making. This was a blast (and free). My daughter made a huge lei and wore it around for days.
* Everyone needs to go down the water slide...very fun for all ages!

We were there in a "down market" so there were deals going on at most of the restaurants and even at the pool (2-for-1 cabanas).

Overall...fabulous place to stay! Aloha!

Compared to the other resorts in Wailea, the Kea Lani is small and intimate. We were upgraded to an ocean view suit and the view was amazing and the big patio made it easy to enjoy looking at the ocean and the island of Kohoolawe. The staff are very friendly, the pool is nice, and the self parking is good. The housekeeping was excellent; we would come back from breakfast in the morning and our room would be done! That was nice.

This hotel really nickels-and-dimes you to death so you may want to get things elsewhere. The cabana rentals are expensive, room-service food is not worth the expense, and we rented our snorkeling equipment at the Maui Dive Shop at the Shops at Wailea, instead of at the hotel. We also got groceries at Safeway in Kihei and were able to use the kitchenette in the suite, although they are not equiped with dishes and flatwear, for some reason. I didn't think this was the nicest beach. The beach and snorkeling was better at other locations nearby.

We didn't try the restaurants but we did eat at the buffet for breakfast every day because it came with the room. I thought the buffet was excellent. I also got a spa treatment and I really enjoyed it. Internet service was good. A friend used the fitness center and said it was terrible.

I think this resort may get more children because all the rooms have a separate bedroom, which makes it nice for families. But there is a separate adult pool.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay.
