“Always a great spot to vacation in Maui”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 days ago NEW

We have stayed at Makena Surf a number of times over the years and although we have also stayed at the luxury resort hotels we will continue to return to Makena Surf for the beach and water literally right outside the door. The 2 bedroom unit we stayed in this year, B302 , was well equipped, fairly recently updated with a large propane BBQ on the lanai and a terrific ocean and beach view. We have stayed in larger units but this one was certainly adequate. Do be careful if you are not booking a particular unit as some units have not been updated. This is an older condo development- we first came here 20 years ago and it was not new then- but most units are very up to date and the grounds are beautiful with mature foliage. There are no restaurants , bars or shops on site so be prepared to drive a short ways to a variety of restaurants and shopping.

Aloha...We really appreciate your great review of Makena Surf. The beach you are referring to is named Po'olenalena and means "yellow head" which is said to refer to a long time landmark, a yellow streaked rock located on the golf course across the street. We hope you are able to come back soon to enjoy this lovely beach once again.

Mahalo,
Matt S.

We love this quiet south end of Maui, and the Makena Surf is an excellent base. We stayed in F 209, which was almost perfect for our family: spacious, comfortable beds, a nice big comfy couch, good showers, a well-equipped kitchen, and most of all, a lanai with a fabulous ocean view. Our only complaint is easily fixable, so if you're reading this, Destination Resorts, please ask the owners to consider upgrading the TV in the living room. We brought a bunch of movie screeners (my husband gets them because he works in entertainment) but ended up not watching them because the TV sound was terrible and the picture was too small. We don't usually watch TV on vacation and certainly don't need a big fancy one, just a normal, decent-size flat screen with good sound.

Otherwise it was perfect, and we'd come back in a heartbeat. Two beautiful beaches, great snorkeling, two nice pools and jacuzzis, good barbecues, great tennis courts, and a very nice staff.

This is a quiet area. No restaurants or bars or anything within walking distance, so people should know that. It's much more low-key than showy and pricey Wailea next door. Kihei is about a 15-minute drive for lots of restaurants, shops, rentals, surf beach, etc.

Perfect location and accommodations with great views of Molokini and crashing surf right outside the unit. We stayed in Building B and loved it. The unit was very clean and updated. The property is close to golfing and to the Wailea Shops. Would definitely stay here again.

This condo complex is located a bit south of the big luxury resort hotels. It has great snorkeling, nice sand and lots of space. Beach was never very crowded during our stay. We were in a 3rd floor unit with very nice views. The downside to that was lugging all of our stuff up and down. But hey, paradise can't be all easy? For joggers, there are nice roads that aren't very busy. The staff were all very nice and helpful.

Room Tip: Beautiful location, but some buildings have better views - check online. Buildings e and f are both...

We couldn't decide whether to write this review, because quite frankly, we didn't want to draw attention to OUR Makena Surf and have it booked-up next time we're trying to reserve. As well, it's hard to find the right words to describe the wonderful experience we had. Our condo (E204) was hanging right over the beach. Some days we were the only ones on the beach, and some days there were a few other families. We snorkeled a few metres off shore and found coral, urchins, tropical fish, etc. right there. About day 2 we spotted a giant sea turtle by the rocks, and once we knew what to look for, we saw them everyday, sometimes a few feet away from where we were playing in the waves. We used the pool a lot when the waves were too big - it was lovely and warm, with just a few other people around. The condo was absolutely gorgeous, beautifully decorated, wonderfully clean, fully equipped, with a really strong wifi signal. We had the time of our lives.... and will return as soon as we possibly can!

A few other notes:

You can rent snorkel equipment from Snorkel Bobs for a reasonable price for the week instead of buying your own.

We had a private chef (Maui Private Chef - Kevin Dumlao) come and cook dinner for us and we ate on the lanai one night, as the sun was setting, a warm breeze was blowing, and an intimate wedding was underway a few metres away. Absolute heaven!!

Loved the views especially when watching the whales and sunsets. Close to terrific restaurants and shopping. Very private and enjoyed every minute. Well equipted kitchen and a nice den to use our computer.

Room Tip: Not a hotel but a condo.

This unit is in terrible condition. Orginal 1970s decor. Musky smell throughout the unit. Rusty refrigerator --- yes, there was actually rust on the refrigerator! Wall damage in master bath. Mattress in master bedroom most uncomfortable mattress I've ever slept on. It sagged terribly and my wife actually injured her back sleeping on it. See attached pictures. Unfortunately, you'll just have to imagine the bad smell to that goes along with the 40 year old decor.

Aloha....I truly appreciate you sharing your comments and hope you will accept my sincere apologies for what you experienced while you were our guest. We are currently in contact with the owner of the unit and are working towards making the improvements that will bring it up to our standards. I understand this does not change your recent experience, but I hope you can feel confident that we heard your concerns and are acting upon them.
