“Beware of whats in the water for your safety!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2013

Beautiful beach! But very strong current, I did not let my little boy play in the water . Not for small children to play in. Plus the locals warned me that there is something going on with the sharks in this side of the island. A guy died three days before we arrived here to this side of the island. Shark bite off his foot and he bled out on the way in. There is been four attacks this month alone on this side of the island. It is in the paper about how that guy was bite. you can read about it for yourself. Beautiful beach , just be careful! Sand castle is good to do here!

“Perfect beach day”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2013

This beach in Makena State Park, also known as Big Beach, is really just a perfect place to spend the day. The beach is long and wide, with life guards. There are trees at the back for shade, or bring an umbrella. The ocean floor is sandy and it's easy to swim there -- there were lots of families with kids. And if you want you can walk up the path and over the rocks to Little Beach, which is clothing optional. There are porta-potties near the parking area. The day we were there was very cloudy, but we still had a great day.

“Terrific beach!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2013

This is a state park and is very beautiful. The sand is soft and powdery. There seemed to be a little more surf here, good for body surfing. The sand gets very hot and there is not much shade, so you need a chair and an umbrella. You can go down the far end of the beach, climb up the hill to another small beach that seems to be frequented by "free souls". There is a taco stand in the parking lot that has drinks and limited food offerings. Service can be very slow if you are there at noon to two, better choice would be to pack a lunch. Enjoy!!

“Hidden Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2013

Bring your beach chairs, an umbrella and a boogie board. This is a beautiful, quiet beach and nice waves. You can park along the road and look for the light green staircase to access the beach. This is a hike down, but worth it. There is some snorkeling there, but more for playing in the waves.

“Makena state park is great.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2013

Really nice area with some great beaches. Head down a little further and take a look at Oneuli beach. Amazing black sand and great sunsets as well, with some surprise turtles popping in every now and again.
