“FABULOUS HOTEL, DEFINITELY GOING BACK....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2014

Let me start by saying, WE LOVE MAUI.... and we are definitely going back to this hotel again, within the next year or so. Our trip startd off on Thanksgiving Day 2013, and we flew to Maui, HI. Although we have been to two islands in Hawaii, this was the first time in Maui. We read about the Makena Beach and Golf Resort on TripAdvisor, and there were so many good reviews, we defintiely knew we found our hotel. When we checked in, we were given a room, next to the construction area, but it was a holiday, so no one was there anyhow. We were told that the next morning, if we wanted to move, we could - so we did. We actually upgraded our room to the beachfront, which was very very nice - great views. Although it was not whale season, it was still a great room, very clean and comfortable - but to be able to see whales from the hotel would have been exceptional [planning on going durng month of February next time].

When we checked in, Caryl was the person who helped us, and she was very nice and friendly - much like everyone. However, the next day I had the pleasure of dealing with Gail @ the front desk, who was fantastic. She was so pleasant, and friendly, and a joy to talk to. We actually stopped to visit her throughout our stay, even just to say 'hi'. Then the next day at breakfast, we had Thomas take care of us, and he was very nice and sweet - pleasure to talk to as well. But "Faiz" was another gentleman that came up to our table and started talking to my husband and I. He was extremely nice, funny, and gave us some local input aobut the island that we did not know. We actually looked for him on other days, because he was so nice.

At the pool restaurant we were delighted to be taken care of by both Big C and Helen - who were both very nice and friendly. Like I stated before, EVERYONE at this hotel was so nice and friendly to us and we could not have asked to be at a better place. Along with the people mentioned above, we also had the pleasure to deal with Andy, Ron, and the hotel manager - Mr. McCarthy.

From the resort location, the pool, restaurants, fitness center, beach, decor, atmosphere, and the fact that they just started to decorate for Christmas - made this trip exceptional. We had a great tme, easy to get around the island, and everyone was very helpful with directions, towels, and greeting us - that they made us feel special, each and everyday.

I cannot say how much we enjoyed our stay, and how much we are looking forward to going back, and actually talking and planning our details now.

Room Tip: All rooms are great, but oceanfront or view if you want to wake up to heaven everyday!

We stayed at the Makena for our wedding and family vacation. We booked rooms for our entire family, and in general were all very satisfied with our stay and the wedding coordination. The hotel is located at the south end of the island. We found the beach to be great with exception of high surf, but that's a product of Mother Nature! The hotel staff was exceptionally friendly and courteous. Fe and Roey in Concierge were fantastic, and Roey put an extra touch on our honeymoon dinner reservation at Spago by letting them know we were newlyweds, thanks Roey! We loved our ocean front room on the 4th floor, and spent mornings watching whales and evenings viewing sunsets from our lanai. Tip: the lower the floor, the larger the rooms. Don't be afraid to book a first or second floor ocean view room, they are spacious and the views are great as long as you are on the south side of the resort. Unfortunately the north side of the resort has a construction zone view, which is off resort property and beyond control of the hotel. The hotel manager was able to accommodate all our guests on the good side of the hotel, and everyone was happy with their room by the end of their stay.
Holly, our wedding coordinator was wonderful to work with, and she made sure everything went according to plan. My only complaint was that the sound person started pulling plugs before we were finished with post wedding celebrations, and our guest lei were a bit mixed up, but those were minor things compared to the overall experience. If you are doing a wedding there, I recommend Scott Drexler for photography (fun person, and beautiful photography), and Heather Green for hair and make up (a true artist!). If its a small wedding like ours, the Makena Point venue is just lovely! We were treated to breaching whales at the end of our ceremony-magical!
As far as amenities at the hotel go, food was good, and the dinner restaurant was touch and go with service. We enjoyed breakfast, where you can either get the buffet or order off a menu. The poolside bar and restaurant food was great (mahi mahi tacos my favorite, and pizzas the favorite of others), but the service was inconsistent. We found one waiter in particular to be a fun person, but not so great in efficiency ( I.e. forgot to turn our order in to the grill twice!). We recommend going off property for dinner, the Monkey Pod being our favorite, as the resort shuttle will take you there and pick you up. The shops at Wailea have many good restaurants, and the larger hotels do as well. The lobby lounge at the Four Seasons is worth a visit, and try their signature Mai Tai! Other guests recommend a trip to Keihi for lunch and dinner as well. One guest tried the beachside massage and said it was heavenly!
My husband being an avid being avid golfer, we can't wait to return when the course is finished. It's in a beautiful location, and I was able to run the cart paths in the mornings during our stay to get a feel for what the finished product will be. My husband and guests golfed at the nearby Gold and Emerald courses, and had the time if their lives--challenging courses with breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean.
All in all we had a fantastic experience. Thank you Makena, for making our special day memorable!

Room Tip: Book on the south side of the hotel, and larger rooms are on the lower floors. There are no bad view...

We decided to travel to Maui to celebrate our 20th anniversary. After carefully study of trip advisor reviews we chose to stay at the Makena Beach & Golf Resort. We chose the hotel because of reviews, location, and the value the hotel offers to its guest. Our room was on second floor with a good ocean view. The room was very large and had a double sliding glass door to outdoor patio. You could hear ocean and see whales from the room. The bathroom included Tommy Bahama bath products, tub, plus a walk in shower. Hotel offers no resort fee, free valet, free in room wifi, free bottled water, and an incredible breakfast buffet was included in our room package. Pool area was small but had food & bar service. Beach was incredible very similar to Big Beach which was a few minutes away. Kai Kanani Boat picks up guest at beach for snorkel, whale, and sunset cruises. We enjoyed our stay and will definitely come back on our next visit to Maui.

Room Tip: 2nd floor rooms are larger than rooms on 3rd - 5th floor. Rooms closer to middle of hotel have best...

Great location and the beach is wonderful. The staff was great and always took care of our requests. Great value for your money. Grounds are perfectly manicured and well kept. One of our favorite things was the "Singing Barista" at Barista 5400. What a delight to meet such a wonderful lady. Our little girl loved her!!

I chose this resort because I wanted to stay in Wailea and didn’t want to pay the outrageous prices of the other hotels. Previously, we’ve stayed at Four Seasons (twice) and the Marriott; so much of what I compare is to those hotels. Just to give an idea of price difference, I was able to get an ocean front room at Makena, plus the cost of our inter-island fare, plus the Jeep rentals on both islands for LESS THAN the cost of a garden view room at the Four Seasons.

We were told we had the ‘best room’ at the resort - 5th floor, ocean front on one side and due to their unique configuration, you were treated with a super awesome view of Haleakala when you walked out your door. What other hotel can offer that?

The first day we arrived around 4 pm and by the time we were getting settled, sunset was close, so we chose to order room service and eat on our lanai. Seriously, I don't know of another spot on the island with such magnificent views from a 5th story like that. (Also, food was delish)

Their pool bar drinks cost $11 compared to FS $16 when we visited. If you like your Lava Flows, that adds up. Plus, their other food was less expensive compared to the other hotels. Our package included bfast - which WE LOVED!! Always a delightful meal to sit outside and enjoy your coffee.

We rented the cabanas on the beach a couple times - very nice to have. We also rented snorkel gear from them for an hour (no need to get elsewhere if all you are doing is messing around for an hour) and I rented a paddleboard, which was a learning experience in the ocean for me! But the nice part is you don't need a tour or anyone to guide you - just do your own thing!

You won't be disappointed with this hotel.

The Makena Beach resort was a really fun place to stay. The staff was friendly. The beach was perfect for getting a tan and swimming. We got the package with the breakfast, and the staff there was very friendly. The food was good too. Great omlettes, crispy bacon, and tropical fruits. Yum. Our family really enjoyed the resort and the trips to Kihei.

If you're looking for action, head to the other end of Maui. This is a somewhat isolated resort at the quiet end. The staff was great from the front desk to the valets to room service they were courteous, helpful and ever smiling. Our room was clean and well maintained during our holiday stay. A shuttle is available at no charge to take you to any place in Wailea and will return to pick you up. A car is a must if you want to venture further. Be aware that one side of the building while having an ocean view also looks over a construction site which seriously detracts from the romantic setting one might expect. We found the concierge staff willing to help but quickly recognized that their information regarding conditions at the volcano summit was of limited value and their restaurant recommendations may not be the best. This website was far more useful. Lastly and our only major complaint deals with the practice of claiming chairs at the pool. It was so humorous yet frustrating that we took time stamped photos of empty chairs claimed by water bottles, tennis shoes, towels, hats, books or the family matriarch for four hours or more before a human sat in them. Most chairs were "claimed" by an inanimate object by 7am and not occupied by a walking, talking human being until sometime after 9am. While we thoroughly enjoyed the matriarch who spent an hour and a half arranging the five chair family nest before any one else arrived or the couple who claimed their chairs with books and towels before leaving for two hours or the shoes that claimed a chair with no visible human owner for four hours we did feel that a human occupancy rate of less than 20% with 100% of the chairs claimed was ridiculous.

Room Tip: Rooms that don't overlook the construction site.
