“Perfect Beach, Great Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2013

It's pretty rare to find a great hotel on a perfect beach, but that's exactly what you can expect to find here.
A curved, white sandy beach gently laps the shore. Great snorkeling can be found just a few yards off the south end of the beach. Safe swimming for most kids, inviting for adults, I've rarely found a better family-friendly beach. And it's all just a few steps from your hotel room. The hotel itself has an understated elegance, less over-the-top than most of its competitors in nearby Wailea. The pool area is a little disappointing for such a nice property, but with a beach this good, who cares.

The hotel offers a lot. Our package included a fabulous buffet breakfast. Parking, Wi-Fi, all included and no resort fee. We appreciated the little touches like a really fun mini golf-course (free), food to feed the hungry koi fish (just ask), and classes like yoga, scuba, and star gazing.

Our one complaint? We were disappointed by the cost to rent an umbrella for much needed shade on the beach - $25/day seems awfully steep.

Overall, a quiet, well above average hotel with a gorgeous setting.

We stayed here for one week on our honeymoon - and loved every minutr of it. The resort is lovely - the staff all friendly and ready to give tips on sightseeing. The grounds are impeccable and beach is lovely powdery golden sand. Our room was very comfortable with a king bed, mini fridge, etc. Our travel agent recommended we add the breakfast to our package and we were glad we took her advice - a hearty buffet every morning! The hotel's location was perfect as it was a short drive into Kihei or Wailea or any of the island's sights, but far enough away from touristy hustle and bustle. We look forward to returning!

We just returned from a 15 day stay at this resort. This was our 3rd stay. Our first was when it was the Maui Prince, the second was during the week the ownership changed from the Maui Prince to the Makena Beach and Golf Resort. We have seen many improvements over the last 6 years and it is clear the Makena Beach and Golf Resort has become the Best Value on Maui; for example: 5 nights for 4, no resort fees, no parking fees, free shuttle service to Wailea, all rooms remodeled, beautiful beach front property, free clubs for golf, arrangements made for discount golf at Wailea golf courses, free breakfast buffet which included the tax and gratuity, reasonably priced Asian and Seafood buffets...and the list goes on.

To summarize:

Staff: Outstanding/commendable/extraordinary service from all valet/bell, pool, beach, restaurant and room service staff.

Breakfast Buffet: the free breakfast buffet includes the tax and tip making for an extraordinary value.

Printer: Inclusion of a printer with the lobby computers is a big plus for those of us who bring computers but don't have a print capability.

Buffets: the Asian buffet and the Seafood buffet were exceptional presentations of delicious food and were great values.

Golf: I was initially upset with the closing of the golf course (after I had made my reservations); however, the inclusion of the Eleair special and the free golf clubs (provided by Makena Beach) worked out extremely well.

Rooms: the bed was extremely comfortable. The bed room was clean, comfortable, and nicely decorated.

A couple of minor concerns:

Parking: I prefer, at times, to self-park. The self-parking spaces are now too far from the entrance because the valet service has reserved over 30 spots near the entrance to the guest parking lot.

Bathrooms: Are still not up to 4/5 star.. but, we understand the age of the hotel and difficulty in renovating bathrooms. Makena Beach has made the best of the situation and considering the VALUE the resort provides we can live with this minor inconvenience.

The main pool is still small; only one depth; but, the free cabana's and umbrella's combined with the excellent service and pool side restaurant makes up for the pool size... besides, most of our time was spent on the beautiful beach.

Overall: Makena Beach and Golf Resort offers exceptional value for the product vs. the cost... This was our 3rd stay and we were extremely happy to be their guests. We hope to return again soon.. Aloha and Mahalo.

We have been to this resort twice and have been completely satisfied both times. The breakfast buffet is super. It has everything from made to order omelettes, eggs, waffles, french toast about 3 or 4 different yogurts fresh fruit, bacon and so may other things I can't remember them all. wish it went on all day!! Rooms are clean and up to date, staff is excellent. It is a beautiful spot!! One of the nicest spots on Maui. It was a little removed from everything which is what we liked! We rented a car and did things the island had to offer, helicopter ride, Hana Highway, shopping, walking swimming, went to the top of the volcano. Whale watching from the balcony is amazing! We are going back again!! Way to go Makena Beach Resort!!

Room Tip: Oceanfront- the whales are amazing! Be sure to take binoculars.

The Makena was more than we hoped for. Very large room and lanai with a partial view of the ocean which was perfect. Very private. We overlooked the grassy area on the south - beautiful view. We had a very reasonable rate which included breakfast (normally $25 @) which was a full out buffet by the koi ponds (omelette station, etc.). Also included was a free Makenna beach towel and canvas bag and a free Snuba (or scuba) lesson in the pool by Maui divers (Larry was great). The staff was exceptional including the concierge, Tamara. The open wall architecture and landscaping makes The Makena a beautiful resort. I have to mention the great beach and snorkeling and that this resort has its own catamaran in the cove with daily sailings to Molokini - closer than the Lahaina tours. Wish we'd stayed longer - we're now trying a B&B. We also recommend the Lokelani condos.

What could make ten days in Maui even better ? Staying at the Makena Beach &Golf Resort. We had a terrific time here this September. Right from the get go, complimentary Valet Service! Wow! I'm used to being gouged just for hotel parking everywhere these days, what a wonderful service. The valets were really helpful, ready with everything/detail/directions/suggestions you could want for/after a day trip. What a treat this service was. We had a large clean room, good views and excellent housekeeping staff. The Makena Resort (pronounced Mah-Ken-ah not Mah-kee-nah) grounds are massive and well cared for. I don't golf but I understood the main course is under construction, check with them for current status if this is an issue for you. The beach is fabulous, beach staff are quick to assist with recliners, umbrellas or cabanas. The snorkeling is first class, lots of fish and turtles every day. The staff are super attentive and exude the feeling of family working together. Juan and Lucky kept us more than happy and entertained at the pool bar and grill. They make a fabulous Frozen Coconut MOJITO that helped cool down the afternoons. Others raved about the fish tacos and the wood fired pizza. The Exc Chef runs a first class kitchen and Michael Morris the F&B Manager handled our diet issues with ease. I can't say enough about the Resort Staff! We met a number of people that have come back to this resort over and over again. It was common to hear that staff have been here for more than 20 years. It shows, this is a very special place. There were complimentary Lei making classes, complimentary snorkel/scuba lessons, even a complimentary 2 hour Star Gazing class with a very talented and entertaining Astrologer and his telescope for us to watch Saturn cross the sky. Thank You to The Makena Beach for a first class vacation. We would defiantly come back.

Great for snorkeling..Tons of reefs off the beach..Just a taste of what we saw snorkeling...Eagle Rays..Sea Turtles, Octopus, Humahumanuko...Moray Eel, etc..

Friendly staff everywhere you turn, very accommodating. The breakfast "Barrista" continental $20 credit worked out great for us..Cinnamon Rolls, Fresh Fruit, Yogurt, Great Banana Bread, etc..When we arrived, the hotel wasn't full so they upgraded us free of charge to a room with a view of the ocean. The Bellmen/Room Service was outstanding..The Molokini Bar & Grill restaurant was excellent, they even had Gluten Free Bread for my fiancé, Awesome! The hotel was quiet on, and around the area, but close enough to all the major activities. The beach was fabulous and very clean! Rental of Kayaks was very reasonable, and it even came with professional instruction from the beach boys.

They have computers/printers available for printing boarding passes out. We took advantage of their miniature golf, it was a very fun course! Parking was free or you could have a valet..security was present...it was nice to have a wall safe...and mini fridge..

We did an extensive search on line, and through "Maui Revealed" and this hotel seemed to give you the most bang for your buck...we would go back in a heart beat! The hotel/staff exceeded our expectations, and that's a rare thing these days...
