“THE BEST Value for your money in Wailea / Makena Beach”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2013

We stayed at the Makena Beach and Golf Resort for 7 nights from April 12th to the 19th. Initially we chose Makena Beach Resort based on the facts that a) it was directly on one of the best, most prettiest beaches on Maui, and b) the Resort had a very good, highly ranked tennis facility. Alot of research on Trip Advisor solidified our choice. The rooms have all recently been tastefully renovated over the past 2 years and all rooms are very spacious. The resort has 310 guest rooms and all have been completely refurbished. The bed was very, very comfortable. While our room location was on the top floor and very close to the absolute beach front side of the building facing towards the Southwest side of the beach, and the gorgeous view from the room as can be seen from my pictures was as close to perfect as you can get, I am sure that all rooms have some views to the ocean as well. The Resort has at its centre, a stunning Japanese atrium garden complete with waterfalls, beautiful tropical flowers and foliage, and meandering streams filled with Koi fish - all in all a very Zen space. While we did not take advantage of any of the guest activities such as outrigger canoe lessons, intro snorkel and scuba lessons or the star-gazing program, all these and more were offered here. I will review the Makena Tennis Club separately but wanted to note here that complimentary shuttle service was offered to the Club and each morning almost without exception we took advantage of this quick service. Now for the staff, EVERYONE, from the valet staff, counter staff, Molokini Grill staff, and all cleaning staff exemplified the Mahalo spirit. We truly felt as though we were a part of the Makena family during our week stay there. I have been to other places in Hawaii and have felt this same level of service elsewhere, but I can genuinely see that all of Makena Beach Resort's staff truly love what they do and it shows. I do hope that you pass this feedback on to your staff in some way. I feel that the experience was absolutely 5 star in large part thanks to your amazing staff. Thanks to all of you for the very special memories, we will be back soon. Mahalo, George & Mary

Room Tip: top floor and as close to the ocean front point of the triangle shape is ideal.

Where to start? I read all the reviews I could find on Makena Beach & Golf Resort... and was a tad apprehensive with the complaints of the construction. etc.

Well, so very very glad we went for this place!

Here's the rundown of positives first: Just wonderful in every way! I dare say the staff at Makena is the friendliest on all the island! First class service with a smile all the way! Incredible value here at this resort and I sure hope they keep it that way! The breakfast was delicious- room service was top notch (not a wide selection, but fast- and very good food) The poolside bar was nice as well with LUCKY being our favorite bartender. Nice slice of beachfront at the resort and the sunsets were just incredible! Snorkeling was great- and we got to see turtles up close several of the days we were there. Off in the distance we also saw whales from our balcony. Our room was very well maintained. Bathroom well stocked with Tommy Bahama products- fresh bottled water and Starbucks coffee added daily was a nice little touch. Soft towels that were like new each day (just thought I'd mention this since it made an impression) the pillows were divine as well. Had a good working safe for valuables, and a little mini fridge for drinks- loved how the room was set up to where you don't hear the little fridge running at night. (again, little perks) The hotel is older but has been remodeled and maintained extremely well. Grounds were beautiful and kept up so nicely. Loved riding bikes around the area and resort! Outdoor activities were plentiful and most were of no to little charge. We worked out several times in the awesome gym on site. Free Yoga on beach and lots of other little activities for guests! Loved the whole approach at Makena! They are doing it RIGHT! We appreciated how it was far out from the hustle and bustle- and it felt like a private retreat. Although the pool area is a bit on the dated side- we liked the adult atmosphere.

Read all the reviews, people are not exaggerating here. It was just great! (Not great if people with little kids took over pool area, but that did not happen while we were here- and we only swam in pool one time- the beach and the ISLAND adventure is WHY we were there, we can swim in a pool at home) smiles

Negatives or drawbacks: Ok, here's the deal on the construction. The hotel has NO CONTROL over the construction going on in the private lot that borders their North side. However they have made every possible effort to accommodate guests on that side of the resort. We heard the noise only 1 day out of 7 days we were there. I am sure within time the construction will be over and this issue will no longer be mentioned, but until then- its only fair to warn fellow travelers that may be sensitive to this. If you stay in your room all day long- then yeah- being on the North side and seeing or hearing construction sounds would ruin your trip- but WHY would you stay in your room all day??? Smiles. The other possible negative would be how far out and secluded this resort is. If you love to be in the middle of it all- this is NOT the place for you. Stores are a good drive away and so are restaurants and other types of nightlife (or should I say daylife since its Hawaii) haha Its a good idea to stock up on things, make sure you have a rental car if you stay out this far. I would not personally recommend this resort to families with smaller children. It is more for adults and older kids that truly enjoy the beach. The poolside area is dated (lovely, but dated) and thus has little to offer for smaller children. Other than that- I honestly have no other negatives to mention!!

Room Tip: All rooms have a view, so nothing to fear there. North side has the temporary construction issues so...

The cleanliness and modernness of the room was fantastic. The lanai was a good size and grounds were well kept. The poolside and beach service is good. The pool itself is okay, but not great. The beach, though, is beautiful and I saw a turtle just feet away.

Kids could play all day here, w/ the beach, ping pong, shuffle board (not sure what it's called on the ground?), and pool. The beach had a choppy side and smoother side. Good for some easy boogie boarding, many were snorkeling.

Breakfast was included w/ my room and was good. A lot of fresh fruit and eggs to order.

Room Tip: Choose a room that is away from construction. In 2013, this was the south side. Pay the extra fee fo...

We spent 4 nights last week at this resort and really liked it. The location is amazing. It has a really stunning stretch of beach and isn't very crowded. The resort is on the older side but VERY well maintained. The food was good, the drinks were great, the pool was nice. They give you water every day. When lying on the beach, they come around and offer you fresh ice water. It's really nice. We would definitely come back!

The only downsides: They are doing construction next door so the equipment was very noisy when we were in our room. On the beach you couldn't hear it really. The people upstairs were constantly smoking (both cigarettes and weed) on the balcony so we had to constantly close our balcony door in the evening rather than let in the cooler night air. My husband wouldn't call and complain for some reason, so I'm not sure if it would have stopped if he had. It's supposed to be a smoke free resort though.

Room Tip: Try to stay on the left side of the building, away from the construction happening on the right side...

We spent 6 nights at Makena Beach Resort and had a very pleasant stay. Our room was located on the 5th floor in the south wing. We never heared anything from the constructions on the north side. The check-in was very welcoming and smooth. As we arrived very late, we ordered some food several days in advance, which was delivered right after we moved into the room. Thumbs up! The room was spatious and clean, with amazing view from our lanai.
Overall service and housekeeping were very friendly and effective, we felt us very comfortable all the time we spent in the hotel.
Valet parking and internet was complimentary at Makena Beach Resort and there was no resort fee!
The all staff was extremely helpful and friendly, e.g. we were given an audio guide CD for the car just after we mentioned that we are going on the Road to Hana!
The beach directly in front of the hotel is one of the best on Maui. The beach chairs and towels were provided. The famous Big Beach is just around the corner in walking distance.
The pool itself was kinda boring, so we never used it. As we usually left the hotel very early in the morning for our day tours, we never joined the breakfast. There is also a coffee shop in the lobby where you get some sadwiches and pastries all day (NB: Fiji bottled water in the small shop bext to it was cheaper than the "Hawaiian" there).
Overall an amazing expereience to stay at Makena Beach Resort! Definitely want to go there again and can strongly recommend to stay there while visiting beautiful Maui.

Room Tip: South wing, higher floor

Our stay here was very relaxing. The rooms are comfortable and the location is ideal. The beach has everything you need. You can swim, snorkel or lay out. Watching the sunset from above the beach is also wonderful.

We rented a kayak from the hotel. We had kayaked on other Hawaiian islands in the past, but the process was never easy. At Makena, you simply walk up to the kiosk near the beach, let them know your room number, and they will help you launch right there.

The hotel has an excellent buffet for breakfast. I highly recommend getting the buffet included with your stay. It is an excellent value. We primarily ate dinners at the restaurants nearby. There are several places with happy hours that make the price reasonable.

The rooms were clean. Starbucks coffee was provided complimentary for brewing in your room. The beds were comfortable. The view from the balcony was perfect.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. They accommodated all of our needs.

We stayed 5 nights here and everything was just perfect. The entire resort is just first class, and the staff is wonderful. Beach access is the best, and a very nice beach at that. We came on the "breakfast package" with an ocean view room, and this is an excellent Maui value. The breakfasts are truly sumptuous, and are varied every day, with so much to choose from. Anytime I am staying on the south shore, I would always come back here.
