I read reviews and postings on this hotel and it met all expectations. The courtyard/atrium is really well done. Loved the breakfast buffet with amazing friendly service there. We had oceanfront a must as far as I'm concerned in whale season. Rooms along the south side would be good too. I would avoid the north side all together. Construction is going to be a big issue for them I think. We heard blasting on our last morning for a short time. I didn't know you couldn't have alcohol on the beach in Maui so no pina coladas on the beach. The pool is downright pathetic but we will always opt for the beach anyway. Bathrooms have been mentioned as a problem but ours was fine. Our water pressure was excellent! I also like the temperature things on the shower. Beds are comfortable. Our patio furniture was in good shape. They should add a chaise lounge, plenty of room for one. The weak areas are the pool, lunch area was overlooking the pool (no view of the ocean). The beach furniture was old but I saw some that looked new so maybe they are slowly getting new stuff. Overrall a 4 star hotel that met expectations. Excellent service in the breakfast area. Front desk was efficient but not overly warm.

Highly recommend Makena Beach and Golf Resort. We came to take advantage of discounted golf rates and free rental clubs for resort guests. Enjoyed the golf course which has wonderful views. Resort used to have 2 golf courses but they have apparently sold off one. However, they still show the sixteenth fairway that runs along the ocean on the sold off south course on the hotel's website. They should update. Resort guests can have complimentary second rounds. But it's hard to do in February as locals get good discounted rates in the afternoon and sunset is about 6pm.

We also liked that they have free parking, including complimentary valet parking, free internet, complimentary use of hybrid bicycles, and no resort fee. The hotel rate is what you pay. So much nicer than hotels that find ways to add on fees. Had originally considered using Marriott points for 5 of 8 days at the Wailea Marriott, but Marriott's fees made the cost at Makena Beach attractive. Tripadvisor reviews of Makena were also better than the Marriott. Reviews of Makena Beach turned out to be right on.

The resort sits on one of the best beaches in Hawaii. The resort is way south on Maui and the beach isn't crowded at all. The pool is small but we didn't have any problem getting lounge chairs with umbrellas. Do think that they should add a hot tub. We had dinner at KO at the Fairmont Wailea one evening and walked down to their beach. Makena beach was so much bigger and better.

We had the fifth night free with breakfast package. Gratuity was included with the breakfast package. The breakfast buffet was excellent. Ordering from the menu looked like it would cost as much as the buffet so they were encouraging everyone to take the buffet. The breakfast restaurant has a beautiful setting with many of the tables outside.

The room was plain and some tropical pictures or paintings on the walls would have helped. The water temperature in the shower varied somewhat, but was bearable. The hotel did look a bit worn in places, but didn't detract from our visit. Having a refrigerator in the room was great for keeping cold drinks on hand for the watching the sun set from the lanai.

On our last day we couldn't get a late checkout, but they let us use the facilities during the afternoon and then let us use their hospitality room to shower and dress for the trip to the airport.

Noticed on our way to the airport that there is a Costco, with a gas station, on the road to the airport so bring your Costco card. Grocery stores sell wine and liquor so I imagine Costco does as well.

Room Tip: South side rooms are probably the best choice.

This resort was recently redone and they have put a lot of effort into staff training. Everyone addresses you by name and they are so friendly and helpful. The little extras that make it nice - they offer you ice water while your lounging at the beach, they ask if you need any towels or water for the day when you take your car out, they give you a bottle of water everyday as well as the standard beach towels and chairs. They do charge for beach umbrellas. Breakfast buffet was very good. Dinner at the Molikini Bar & Grill was a good value on the nights they had a special (3 course prime rib dinner on Sunday) but was not exceptional. But after a big day when you're tired it's nice to just use the resort restaurant. Catching the catamaran right on their beach to go snorkeling on Molikini or whale watching was really great. It was very windy every afternoon while we were there so going in the early morning was best.

I could not be more pleased with this Hotel/Resort! My wife and I stayed here for 6 nights and we had the best experience! The staff was so friendly and helpful. Lucky, the bartender at the pool bar, was amazing and gave great tips and makes the best Mai Thai ever! It combines the luxury of a top resort without the tacky, over the top, style of many beach resorts. The staff is there when you need them, but they don't feel on top of you. The beach feels like your own, and the snorkeling is top notch less than 50 yards from the beach front. After three days, we've decided to make the Makena Beach and Golf Resort our new annual Hawaiian vacation spot!

This was a fine hotel for the price. I agree with the majority of the other reviews. What I was most pleasantly surprised with was the excursion from the beach on the Kai Kanani catamaran. I am not sure if they are affiliated with the hotel but it can be purchased from the hotel concierge or the tiki activity hut on the beach. We did the 9am-1pm snorkel trip. I was suspect when they asked $125/person for this excursion but I wanted to see Molokini Crater and this was convenient from the hotel. I have done a number of these snorkel excursions in different countries and they typically lack enthusiasm and the staff just focuses on quick travel, dishing out snorkel equipment, and getting us off the boat so they can be finished. That was NOT the case with the three staff members that hosted the tour. They were so personable; stopping to watch whales, explaining whales life, spending extra time at turtle town to find turtles for us, acting as bar tenders for everyone for adult drinks, answering questions about Maui and its secretes. The breakfast food was just rolls and juice, however there was plenty for all and they were fresh and delicious. Lunch was a cold cut platter with and assortment of buns and sides (chips, potato salad, macaroni, etc…). The premium to go with this tour was well worth it!

Room Tip: Breakfast buffet was disappointing, however dinner buffet and menu items where very good. Nightly li...

Wow, what a great place! Best location on Maui, out of the way of the crowds from Ka'anapali. Our room was comfortable with a large bathroom area. The beds were as good as Westin's Heavenly Beds! Lanais all have a nice view of the gardens, pool, or beach. Every staff member at the resort was friendly and helpful - they became like friends!

We had a hotel, breakfast & car package via Expedia, and it worked out really well. Our car was practically free. The breakfast package at Makena included $20 per room per day at the cafe counter where we could pick from Starbucks coffee, doughnuts, a bacon cheese croissant, fruits, juices, and much more. It was really convenient and all the food was very good.

The beach is lovely - rent snorkel gear and swim out around the black rocks! We watched a sea turtle swim around all the lovely fish. Since it was late February, we also spotted humpback whales jumping at sunset! Amazing. The pool area is also pretty and the kids' pool allows for a safe spot for the smaller children to swim while the parents watch from a cozy cabana. Everything about the Makena was paradise.
