“Nice hotel but didn't feel 4 star”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2012

To be fair we only stayed there one night, and we booked last minute on hotwire for the last day of our 2 week Big Island and Maui vacation. We had stayed at the Sheraton Maui Resort in Kaanapali for most of our Maui trip, but we also did a night in Hana and wanted something near Wailea for our last day. For whatever reason, the hotel felt very quiet and didn't seem that upscale considering its rating and price. Compared to the Sheraton which benefits from gorgeous grounds and having great snorkeling out the back yard at Blackrock, this hotel seemed quite regular and the beach was not really connected to the hotel and the Makena area seemed very isolated. Access to the parking lot could also be improved. It might be good value compared to some of the very expensive resorts in Wailea (not sure), but we felt the Sheraton was a much better hotel.

Aloha. We thank you for your review of the resort. We are sorry to hear that you did not particularly enjoy your stay with us. We offer a very different experience than the Sheraton Maui and provide various qualities which designated a Summit rating by Preferred Hotels Group which is equivalent to a four star on a five star scale. Unlike other properties like the Sheraton in the Kaanapali area, our location away from the hustle and bustle provides a environment that promotes relaxation through peace and quiet with simple elegance that is a nod to old Hawaii. We are sorry that this was not quite the best fit for your vacation needs. Also Malauaka Beach fronting the Makena Beach & Golf Resort located just a few steps from the resort provides many great snorkeling locations, fronts turtle town which is the best place to see turtles, and has many features like underwater caves, sunken WWII landing crafts, manta rays and even dolphins when venturing farther out, again very different from the Kaanapali Beach. We also benefit from no other resort sharing the powdery white sand beach fronting our resort, thus it lends a feeling of having a private beach. We thank you for choosing to try out Makena during your stay and hope that when you are in need of a more quiet relaxing atmosphere that we may be able to welcome you again, til then we wish you a warm Aloha.

My husband I enjoyed our stay at Makena this past winter. We found the area perfect. The hotel is secluded, but only a 10 minute drive away to the more crowded Wailea, which has a wonderful Ruth's Chris, along with other numerous dining options. We had a package which included the breakfast buffet which was more than adequate. The hotel room is above average. It was not spectacular, but it was clean and renovated. This is not a five star resort, but you are not paying five star prices. Housekeeping services and other staff were always friendly and helpful. I did not choose the hotel for the room, but for the location, so I will share a little bit about that. The beach was never overly crowded, and chairs were always available. Humpback whales were visible from the beach everyday while we were there, including a mom and calf who stayed very close to shore. Snorkeling from the beach was excellent! I have never stayed at any beach resort where I could snorkel with huge green sea turtles right from the hotel beach! Snorkeling gear and kayaks were available for rental. Kai Kanani (I'm not sure of the spelling) also picks up directly from this beach which is convenient if you plan on snorkeling the Molokini crater or doing a whale watch tour. This place is a wonderful value for the area, and I highly recommend it for the adventerous traveler and families with children.

My wife and I have been coming to Makena for over 8 years and we consider ourselves extremely loyal guests. However, we are not blindly loyal -- and given cause, we would (and could) stay at ANY of the Wailea resorts. Given our years of experience with the Makena Beach and Golf Resort and our most recent stay, we will always consider staying at the Makena Beach and Golf Resort when we’re on Maui! We love this place!!

The Makena isn't a five-star resort, but it has never presented or pretended to be a five star resort. Our five star rating is based on OUR opinion of the resort and experiences. Most importantly, the Makena Beach and Golf Resort is what a Maui experience SHOULD be. You will not get the ‘faux-luxury’ of the other Wailea resorts, but you can have an absolutely wonderful and truly magical visit at the Makena - - without costing yourself wheelbarrows of money. If you have money to burn, by all means, stay at any one of the other beautiful Wailea resorts. But, if you’re looking for ‘Aloha’ and a truly memorable and ‘real’ Maui experience at a fair and affordable price, the Makena will more than deliver.

Looking for a very comfortable and clean room with great views and the best beach imaginable? Well, you’ve found the perfect resort!!! It may not be as polished as some of the other Wailea resorts, but the Makena is and always will be a BEACH resort. Quite simply – this is beach or ‘bare-foot’ elegance - not the Las Vegas style glitz of the other Wailea resorts. If you’re looking for ‘Las Vegas style’ amenities – this IS NOT the right place for you.

From the moment you arrive, you know there is something special in the air– the setting is absolutely and undeniably beautiful – a serene, soothing, and absolutely tranquil ambience exude from every square inch of the resort! Valet, front desk personnel, and the bellmen are courteous and helpful. The room is extremely comfortable – providing everything you might need for a great stay (a comfy bed, ample space, an impeccably clean and well-stocked bathroom, and a lanai with unrivaled views). Again, if you’re looking for a fancy pool with waterslides and waterfalls, you need to look elsewhere…however, with a beach like this: what are you doing at the pool?

The breakfast buffet is delicious (complete with a full omelet bar, exotic fruits, ample protein selections, and baked goods including waffles and French Toast, accompanied by a wide assortment of juices, coffee, etc..)! The staff is incredibly and genuinely warm-hearted and welcoming – this is true Aloha spirit at its finest! The beach is the best (quite simply the best) on Maui --- which should be more than sufficient to help validate and confirm your Makena decision. We don’t have any idea what more anyone could possibly expect…for the money, this place is unbelievable!!

No resort fees, no valet parking fees, an all-inclusive breakfast, and delicious food offerings from the Pool Grill, the Golf Club, or the Molikini Lounge (not to mention, ample activities including putting greens, bicycle riding, shuffleboard, ping pong, star-viewing, sailing and other water-activities) what more could you want? Given everything else, it is the beach that absolutely ‘sells’ Makena. Just spend a few minutes with the folks attending the beach cabana and you’ll learn so much (i.e. what time to see the turtles, where the best fish and coral are located, how the currents move on and off the beach, etc).

So, if you’re looking for one of the best BEACH experiences with exceptionally friendly staff and comfortable accommodations…look no further! The Makena can and will deliver a wonderful vacation experience!! If you’re looking for glitz…you’ll be disappointed. If you want a nice room, good food, exceptional and welcoming staff with a lot of value for your dollar – the Makena Beach and Golf Resort is the perfect choice!!!

The 'new' ownership has a done a wonderful job and we wish them all the best as they pursue more and exciting new options! We’ll be back and would whole-heartedly recommend the Makena Resort to anyone looking for a tranquil, serene, and quiet resort on a fantastic beach

Room Tip: Fifth Floor overlooking the Pu'u O'Lai provides awesome views and absolute serenity! You ca...

We recently stayed at the Makena Beach and Golf Resort after visiting here many times for their wonderful Sunday brunch (back from the Maui Prince days). We were delighted with our stay. The staff was wonderful from the front desk to the valet staff, beach staff and housekeepers. We had booked a partial ocean view, but were upgraded to a full ocean view room on arrival. Our room was very comfortable (though the shower controls were a little weird) and well supplied. After having stayed at another resort for the first part of our stay, it was a pleasure to not be nickled and dimed for everything. There were no extra fees to use lounge chairs by the pool or on the beach. They were generous with toiletries and kept our room supplied with water and coffee. For a couple from the Pacific Northwest, it was nice to have a barista bar in the lobby for our morning espresso fix.

Another delightful surprise was that golf club and shoe rentals were thrown in for free at the Makena golf course for resort guests.

And just to reiterate, the Sunday brunch is still excellent! We were delighted with our stay.

We stayed here for three nights during our honeymoon and were very disappointed in the environment for several reasons, and its far far away from anything five star that is for sure. Although the front desk and bell personnel were excellent (Bernard in particular) and friendly other aspects of the environment weren't so friendly. This place is under a new ownership and it shows, the beach chairs were all beat up, you have to pay to rent an umbrella and just about everything else except for the shabby towels. The rooms are well appointed and I liked the skin lotion but that is about it. It certainly is not the best of Maui and overall it deserves a poor review not just because of our experiences.

This place is missing some ambiance and there were other strange issues like they took out the hot tub and the pool side bar closes at sunset. That did not make any sense what so ever and the employees were not happy about it. The pool area is strange and small overall and again employees here were kind of unhappy and out to lunch. The table on our Lani had broken glass on the edges and we were supposedly upgraded to a multiple view room but it really wasn't. Keep in mind you pay for this hotel before you even arrive.

We did not know that it was a totally non smoking environment and the guest above us complained about our smoking on the outdoor lanai. Security attempted to call us but every time we got to the phone the caller hang up after the second ring, this happend three times. However, security was quick upon us and when they came to our door after trying to call us we had a very bad experience. The security dude (Russel, who probably is a member of the Maui police department) was outrageously aggressive, loud, offensive and in my view completely out of control. He even made my new wife shake his hand and promise not to smoke. If the hotel is completely non smoking then why are they selling cigars and cigarettes in the lobby store? I asked for a call with Russel the next morning and he was again rude, obnoxious and thought his behavior was OK. His behavior at the door was like that of a policeman addressing a domestic violence incident, when in fact it was only the first complaint about our smoking. In my twenty five years of business and pleasure travel I have never experience anything like this from any security person in any hotel. So if you go here don't smoke and if you want the best on Maui go to the Four Seasons just down the road. This is far from the best and while writing this I noticed two reviews giving this place five stars, those reviewers must regularly stay at Best Westerns.

The Manta restaurant was not much better, although I did have a good Mahi Mahi dish but the mixed grill was pretty much disgusting overall. We did like the bar and the pineapple bacon pizza. The breakfast buffet is good along with the complimentary breakfast at the lobby Starbucks. Again if you want a good meal for a fair price go to Duos at the Four Seasons. Overall a disappointing environment and not a great value, how about a campfire with smores at night for $25 per person? Are they kidding. The location is great, next to Makena beach and turtle bay. If you want the best don't go here and get disappointed.

Room Tip: Forget this place and spend the extra dollars at the Four Seasons you can hear nearly everything fro...

Aloha guest, we thank you for taking the time to write about your experiences at Makena. We are very surprised to hear about your characterization of the resort, as your experiences described are not typical of the guest experience. Though we do not claim to be a five star resort, we are characterized as such by reviewers who consistently provide four and five star ratings on review sites such as this, thus we do our best and strive to provide five star services, accommodations and most importantly experiences. For this reason, we are very sorry to hear that your experiences at the resort were not as you would have hoped.

Over the past decade Hawaii lawmakers have imposed very strict and clear direction on smoking laws which protect against second hand smoke. Hawaii law states that smoking is prohibited in any public areas that has a roof or are within 20 feet of any entrances, exits or windows. For this reason, as well as to be considerate of the health and safety of others guests (both smoking and non-smoking), we have designated all our rooms as non-smoking and provided many appropriate smoking areas around the resort, in compliance with Hawaii law. We have tent cards on the desks provided in all the rooms that specifically state that our guest rooms are non-smoking and that a $200 fee will be imposed if guests are caught smoking in the guest rooms. I think you will find that this regulation is similar to many if not all the properties on Maui including those you have suggested in your review. Because the hazards of second hand smoke and the standing of Hawaii law, we take guest complaints about in-room smoking seriously. However, our intention when investigating these concerns are not to be aggressive or offensive and are sorry to hear that this was the impression left with you. Our hotel managers have a many years of experience and training in handling such difficult situations in the hospitality, thus we are saddened by such characterizations as they are not typical and indicative of how we treat any of our guests. We thank you and your travel companion for being very considerate of our the other guests on property by not smoking in the rooms after being informed of our non-smoking rules.

We are sorry to hear as well that you did not favor some of our dining offerings. We do feel and continually work to improve our food offerings while still providing a value. As a correction, our fireside stargazing activity is complimentary for all guests. However, our restaurant provides a way to enhance the experience by offering a three course meal for only $25 which includes a entree feature the Hawaii local favorite Mixed Plate, featuring grilled fresh mahi mahi, breaded chicken cutlet (called a chicken katsu) and teriyaki beef, and a to go s'more kit and after dinner apertif to take with you to the stargazing activity.

We are sorry our property was not a great fit for you and hope that you still were able to enjoy your Maui honeymoon regardless. We wish you congratulations on your nuptials and wish you happier future travels. Much aloha from the Makena Ohana.

We don't typically like the resort areas when we vacation. Makena Beach & Gold Resort has the best of both worlds though. They are the southern tip of resort row and are far enough removed that there weren't alot of non-resort guests that visited.

The snorkeling from the beach can be the best in the area. Watch the water before you journey out. We had one great day where we snorkeled with a turtle and saw lots of fish. On another day, we journeyed out to discovered the water was so cloudy it was hard to see anything. Just be careful snorkeling and read the area first. On our first trip out, we followed the other snorkelers to find that they snorkeled over the shallowest area of the reef. While snorkeling my husband tried to convince me that it was deeper than it looked...but I could have swam into it by accident. I asked the activity staff about it and they told me that people routinely get too close and that the reef is actually above water when the tide goes out. The current can also be rough, so just watch the conditions before you journey out.

When we dined for breakfast, they always used our names and they had friendly service everywhere. We used the shuttle, used valet, etc. Everything was great.

Best of everything...we signed up for the hotel rewards program and got a free upgrade on our room. It was 421, partial ocean view. It looked to me like the best view from the whole resort, so I'm not sure how it is "partial". To top it all off, they have the best sunset watching. We enjoyed it most nights, either from the rocking chairs by the beach or from our balcony.

Room Tip: Spring for some sort of ocean view, even partial.

Thank you for the complimentary review of the property. We are glad that you enjoyed our rooms. Due to the unique shape of the hotel all our rooms feature spectacular views, with some partial ocean view rooms seemingly better than most ocean view rooms for other properties. If you liked the view from room 421, you'll love the views from our ocean front category rooms. We hope will visit us again soon, til then we wish you a warm Aloha on behalf of the Makena ohana.

From the complimentary valet service to the cheerful greeting at the front desk I was blown away by Makena before I even got to my room, and the view of the open air courtyard sealed the deal.

The room itself was perfect and had a stunning view of the beach. The bed was large and comfortable and I had everything that I needed in a room... including a basket of fresh fruit, YUM!

Perhaps even better than the accommodations was the service of the staff members at Makena. An answer to a question was always a phone call away and they were always so happy to make my stay more comfortable.

The grounds of the resort were just amazing and I will never forget to snorkelling experience from the outrigger canoe of Makena.

Perfect hotel!
