“Makena has location, location.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2012

Makena Beach and Golf Resort is not the fanciest place on Maui, but the location and the staff make up for any needed upgrades. Beach is great, golf course is super, pool probably needs to be upgraded, but suffices. food choices at the property are a little sparse, but what they do have it pretty good. I was only there for 4 days during the week, so i missed some weekend activities and food choices. i loved the place.....so relaxing; and thats what i look for in a maui vacation.

Room Tip: all rooms are great

Our stay was brief, but amazing. Room was extremely clean and the breeze was so pleasant we never turned on the air conditioning. The courtyard was beautiful with towering trees and a koi pond where numerous fish roamed the water. Pool was small, but very clean and we noticed it was thoroughly cleaned each morning around sunrise. The jogging trail was solid with numerous hills and along the beach road. Great value!

We go to this hotel every Mother's Day for their excellent brunch. We weren't disappointed, it gets better every year. We also appreciate the recent updates to the property. The layout of the resort is very friendly and so is the staff. If you want a feel for the relaxed and lovely feeling of old Hawaii this is the place. The grounds are georgeous and the beach access is excellent with a grassy picnic area under trees and steps down to a sandy beach. There also are bathrooms nearby.

Room Tip: The scenery is either ocean or the beautiful upcountry greenery. A partial ocean view is probably t...

My family and I had a wonderful time over the Christmas season here. All in all everything was excellent. My wife and I still talk about how friendly and helpful the staff was, it really made the stay.

We took the breakfast buffet package with our trip and I would recommend it, there seemed to be something for everyone.

We plan on doing the exact same trip this coming christmas as well, we were that pleased.

Spent a week here and had an overall good experience. The staff was friendly and helpful and except for a glitch with the room, things went fairly smooth. The property has a lot of things going for it such as no hidden fees, no charge for valet parking or internet service, no charge for the pool cabanas, a great beach just steps from the pool area and spectacular views if you opt for an oceanfront room.

On the subject of oceanfront rooms vs. ocean view rooms, be sure that you are guaranteed the type of room that you are booking. This hotel is in the shape of a letter "V" with the tip of the "V" cut off flat. This flat area is the only part of the hotel that faces the ocean and has the direct oceanfront rooms. There are only about eight of these rooms per floor and some of them are suites. If you have a room in one of the other wings then you will either have a garden view or an ocean view room. We booked and paid for an oceanfront room but when we arrived they tried to give us a room in the wing with an ocean view room. We declined that room and after some discussion at the desk we were able to get an oceanfront room (231).

The breakfast buffet was fantastic and you should consider including it in your room package. The birds were a bit of an annoyance but if you opt for an indoor table instead of an outdoor one then you should be okay.

The open atrium area of the hotel is truly a work of art with lots of plants, trees and flowing water. There are giant fish that occupy the pond areas and there were many children who enjoyed feeding them with small bags of fish food.

If I had one complaint about this property it would be the pool facilities. There used to be a spa (hot tub) by the pools but it was removed and has never been replaced. In addition, although the hotel has a pool heater it was either broken or never turned on. The water temperature in both the main pool and kiddie pool was cool at best. If the management spent some time looking at the reaction of the guests who either tested the pool water or tried to get in it then they would know that this is a situation that needs to be addressed.

The beach is one of the better ones on the island. There is a shack where you can get your beach towels and rent various water sports equipment. For some strange reason, the towels and beach chairs are provided at no charge but if you want an umbrella then it will cost you $25.00/day. As the beach is very close to the pool area you can simply set up camp at the pool, where the umbrellas and cabanas are free and then walk to the beach area when you want to take a dip in the ocean.

Overall, a good experience and I would recommend this property to anyone looking for a quiet relaxing vacation away from the hustle and bustle of the Lahaina area.

Aloha, we are glad that you had an overall good experience at the Makena Beach & Golf Resort. In regards to resort rooms categories, the unique shape of the hotel provides our room with varying views of the pacific ocean. Given that Maluaka beach is much wider than the apex of the resort structure some of our rooms not directly located on the apex of the resort's V structure are indeed oceanfront rooms. How we categorize the room depends both on location and what can be seen from a room's balcony and from the interior parts of the room. If the beach or ocean can been seen from all the interior parts of the room (minus the vanity and bathroom areas) than the room is most likely an ocean front room. Just because a room is located on the wings does not necessarily exclude it from an oceanfront category room, in a lot of case the unique position of the resort in relation to Maluaka Beach, ensures that some of the ocean front rooms located on the wings provide more varied and beachfront ocean views than those on the apex of the resort structure. In addition, each year we reassess the categorization of our rooms to ensure the views match the marketed room type.

Regardless, all our rooms provide great ocean views and simply elegant accommodations. We are glad that you enjoyed the room you ended up with. Outdoor dining anywhere in Hawaii has to content with birds, and we looking into ways to help alleviate the annoyance at the outdoor patio seating near the koi ponds and manicured gardens.

Your comments regarding the temperature of the pool has been forwarded to our engineering department, and has raised the temperature of the pool, we hope that for future guests this will longer be a problem.

Due to variable winds and the largeness of the umbrella's, unlike beach chairs and towels, these umbrellas need to tethered to into the sand, which is why they are only readily available request. As you mentioned the pool area provides complimentary umbrellas and cabanas.

We thank you for your review and hope to welcome you back to the property again soon. Til then we wish you a fond Aloha A Hui Ho.

We added this resort at the last minute to our itinerary because we arrived early due to a flight change and our resort was not able to add an additional night for us. We LOVED it and wished we were able to spend at least one more night here. It was quiet, beautiful property, clean comfortable rooms, good breakfast and friendly staff. We were welcomed with a plate of cookies which were very much appreciated as it was late and we needed the treat. The snorkeling on Maluaka Beach right out front was tremendous. Next time we come, I think we might stay two or three nights here before heading up west.

My wife and I stayed in room 411 and the updgrade to partial ocean view was fantastic, as good as full ocean view. Our room was spacious, flat screen tv, good bed and well appointed with a decent patio. The service and friendly staff are the best you will get. We especially enjoyed the large and well equipped fitness room which was our daily warm up for the equally impressive breakfast buffet. We thought the food a bit pricey, good thing the breakfast was included at $50 for 2 ppl, but if you like buffets this one will do you well and the fish pond waterscape is really natural, very cool. The hotel is a bit of a drive from Kihei, but thats the beauty of this resort, its peaceful and away from the buzz of Kihei and even Wailea is only 5 min. up the road. The beach is spectacular and even thought we did not golf, the courses look great and provide that spacious relaxed feeling all around. The pool is great, some complain it needs an upgrade but its fine and the lounge chairs are all padded, unlimited towels, good bar (see Lucky) and Jen (pool deck) for good conversation and the best service. Highly recommend this place for a relaxing vacation. Average age we saw there was mid 40's to 60's, some families and younger ones, but pretty laid back. We would have liked to play volleyball, but there was no other takers.

Room Tip: ask for the upgrade to partial ocean view at least. South side was quiet and good views.

Aloha! We are glad that you were able to get the most of you stay at Makena. The resort offers a much different experience from the resorts in the Wailea and Kaanapali areas of Maui. More laid back and natural in setting the resort is ideal for those looking to get away from it all. We are glad that this is exactly what your perceived and received from the resort. We hope to welcome you back to the property on your next Maui vacation. Til then we wish you warm Makena skies and a fond Aloha on behalf of the Makena Ohana.
