Great place to use the pool , if you are staying in town ! For 10 cuc a person , but get 7 cuc credit at the bar for food and drink ! Mind you , their prices are higher for product ! Staff was very friendly and had a great afternoon !

We stayed two nights at La Union. The best aspects were the helpfulness of the staff and the peace of the courtyards and interior balconies together with the restfulness and sunset views from the roof terrace. What was disappointing was the empty atmosphere of the restaurant in the evening (during high season) and the very average quality of the food. On the second night we enjoyed a much more social atmosphere amid other diners on the roof terrace The central position of the hotel was an advantage since it was close not only to the historic central square but too the commercial life of the city. Our room was spacious, clean and quiet. The public rooms and areas were also oases of calm. We looked at other hotels nearer the water on Punta Gorda but were pleased to have been based by our travel agency at La Union. .

We were bumped from our hotel on Punta Gorda because of overbooking and in reality we were pleased to be in the centre of Cienfuegos because it gave us access to the historic town and the theatre without having to take a taxi. The room was large and a little decrepit but it was ensuite and comfortable. Our dinner was a la carte, not a particularly high standard, and rushed by the staff, but the snack in the bar by the pool earlier in the afternoon was excellent and breakfast buffet the following morning very good. Reception was extremely helpful particularly as our transport arrangements had had to be altered. The ambience of the hotel is lovely around the courtyards and a large swimming pool. Well sited in the middle of the town.

This hotel sits just off Cienfuegos' gracious town square with its cathedral and historic Italian theatre. It is 140 years old, one of the oldest hotels in Cuba. The rooms are arranged around a series of interlinking courtyards, in one of which is a handsome swimming pool. We thought the dining room looked dark and dull so ate out. Our room was large and airy but would have benefited from a bit of maintenance. All the services, such as car parking and luggage handling, were all done cheerfully and efficiently. It all added up to a very Cuban experience.

Room Tip: People overlooking inner courtyards reported quieter nights than those on the street fronts

This is a lovey old building, the rooms and hotel are set around peaceful courtyards one of which has a fair sized swimming pool. It's in a central position just round the corner from the rather element town square.
We arrived by hire car and received a warm welcome, our car was taken care of and parked in a secure area just across the road. Our room was a reasonable size with excellent bathroom, the basin was set in a large marble top, plenty of room for our toilet bags and more. The furnishings are traditionally styled, the bed was large and comfortable, the air con worked well and the curtains kept the room fully dark. Plenty of hot water all the time. All though our room had a balcony overlooking the street it was quiet at night.
Service in the bar (one on the roof) was good as in the dining room. We stayed four nights bed and breakfast but chose to eat dinner in the hotel too. Our experience in Cuba suggests that hotels tend to offer the best food. I believe these government run hotels have a good level of hygiene and cleanliness. Food was fine, not really good or excellent but don't expect great food in Cuba anywhere. In all a charming hotel.
Cienfuegos is a pleasant and interesting city. Although its on the coast there no real beaches but a feeling of being at the seaside. We drove to Trinidad for a day's visit, an easy drive. We were glad we had not stayed there. It is a World Heritage Site and as such struck us as very much a mere museum with a few begging locals about. A long way from real Cuba.

Room Tip: If your not good with stairs ask for a room near the lift. Some are a little walk with a change of l...

The room I had was dark, it didnt more natural light as well as electric lights. The street noise was so bad that I had to keep the TV on to drown it out.
The curtains was dirty, dust was hanging off the valence over the drapes.

BUT the worst was the MOLD, dark black mold growing on the walls inside the closet.

Room Tip: Try to get a room inside rather than one on the street side.

The hotel has a colonioal shabby chic feel, with a pool. The rooms are clean though basic and the staff friendliness varies enormously. The hotel is not good value for money. There is a night club next door, which kept us awake until gone 4am each night. And the food we ate in the very expensive resutrant was the only meal in our two week trip that we complained about. If you do stay here don't waste your money eating here and go instead to the amazing Paladar Ache.
