“Just okay ....”

We stayed at Jagua Hotel as part of an educational tour. In this part of Cuba, the hotels are limited and it is my understanding that Jagua is one of the better hotels .... but, be warned, it smells a little musty and damp, beds are far from plush and the decor is very dated. But, if you want to visit the area, there are not too many great choices.

Our room was quiet enough and the A/C worked so for 2 nights, it worked out.

Stayed 3 nights at the Jagua Hotel as part of a Road Scholar (formerly Elderhostel) tour of Cuba. It was completed in 1959. We were in a room a few doors down from where Fidel stayed in 1960 (sign in the 6th floor corridor). Yes, the hot water wasn't hot except in the AM, there was some mold on the grout, and the mattress was quite firm (just as I like it), and there were no pool towels, but the outstanding feature of the hotel was that the decor is 100% authentic 1950's, to the last detail. Just like the TV series "Mad Men", it brought back fond memories. We didn't eat there except for breakfast, but there are good restaurants with plenty of atmosphere within easy walking distance.

Great location at the end on the "spit" leading out of Cienfuegos to the south. Hotel is on the beach with great views. Walk back into town is longish but do-able. The reception is vast with a bar that is busy in the evenings.

We had rooom 501 which was spacious and had great views from the balcony back into town. The room door dragged on the floor and from the scratch it left - it had been doing so for ages. The twin beds were large, a/c was efficient and the room had plenty of storage. Safety box was 2 CUC/day. TV was modern with good channel selection. Toilet/shower - large and spacious with shower unit in one corner. It was tiled and clean. Water was warm to cool!

Morning buffet was quirky/chaotic as nothing was where you'd expect it to be - you had to search everything out. On the second morning there was no butter as they'd run out. Local cheeses were very good - expecially the "blue". There was only 1 chef at the egg counter so as you can imagine queues were longish. Table cloths could be cleaner too!
Evening buffet was a replay of breakfast - food was average - except for the pork that was very good.

Gardens were nice although the pool did have a scum of suntan lotion on it. There were plenty of loungers. The pool bar did give a fair ammount of noise at night. The lobby bar was also quite lively at night and a mojito was 4 CUC

Room Tip: Get a low numbered high floor room - for the views. You might get some night noise from the pool bar...

Beds and pillows are very hard, but didn't interfere with my getting to sleep. Water only reached a lukewarm level, no matter how long you let in run. Suggest before jumping into filling your plate, sample the varied dishes; some look good but lacking in flavor. Nightclub in the hotel, that might keep you from sleeping.

I spent three nights here. The lobby is very impressive with hanging plants and comfy seating, but the room was disappointing as it was very tired looking and badly decorated, probably 20 years ago by a blind painter. Worst of all the bathroom was not very clean and the shower was mouldy. However, when I complained about the state of the floor a maid came and washed it, but it still looked dirty. The wardrobe doors were difficult to slide open but there was a safe operated by the room key. There were no mattress covers and the sheets were too small!
The balcony overlooked the attractive pool and sitting area with side views out to the bay. The dining room buffet provided a varied selection to choose from and the food was good. The croissants are the best I have ever had! There was some good live music by the pool in the evenings and in one of the bars. The staff was helpful and friendly.

Room Tip: Take care on the stairs as they can be very slippery and due to lack of colour contrast would be dan...

The Jagua Hotel in Cienfuegos has a lovely, peaceful and restful location near the end of the bay of Cienfuegos. Whilst a little way out of town, it is only 4CUC (£3) for a taxi into the centre. There is a short walk along the sea front to the small park at the end of the peninsula - do it in early evening for the spectacular sunset over the sea and admire the well preserved colonial houses along the way. The hotel is modern, clean, with well designed and equipped rooms, though accessed via rather concrete corridors. If you're lucky you get to sleep in the same room that Fidel Castro once slept in. Safes cost a few CUC a night, payable at reception, your room card then operates it. The pool area, with bar and jetty into the sea, is lovely, and enlivened by some good Latin music from the resident band. Inside, the hotel lacks atmosphere, but the buffet was a very good one at both dinner and breakfast.

Room Tip: If you like a shady balcony to sit out on, ask for a room with a pool view.

Spent 2 nights here as part of escorted tour of Cuba. This hotel is adequate and the room had a balcony with view across the harbour, but the whole place feels a bit tired and dated. The pool is nice.
The hotel bar had some excellent live music, but apart from this, there was really no atmosphere. The restaurant could not cope with the number of guests and it was imperative to arrive early for breakfast and dinner, before large queues formed and food, coffee etc ran out.
Architecturally, the hotel is a square featureless slab, amongst some very attractive French colonial buildings. Staff were bored and disinterested. When coach parties came and went, the reception area was impassable. Some sort of organisation is needed in order to process these, which make up the majority of guests, so that existing guests can also receive service.
Location-wise, the centre of Cienfuegos is walkable.

Room Tip: Higher floors probably have better views.
