“A great substitute!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2012

We were supposed to stay at the hotel next door (Villa Montania) for a friends wedding. For about the same cost as their (Villa Montania's) cheapest rooms (far away from the beach), we were able to get an ocean front apartment at the Villa Tropical. We stayed at the M1 room and enjoyed our stay. Simple, basic, and very cost effective. Beautiful view, surfing, and near by reefs. A wonderful cost effective tropical experience.

Room Tip: we stayed in the M1. THe nice thing about this one was cost, as well as it was closer to the hotel n...

Just got back yesterday from Villa Tropical and was generally very happy with our stay. Granted we are a bunch of surfers on a surf trip, but we are all professionals who are over "dirting" it like we did twenty years ago.

By far, the best thing about most of these apartments is the view. We were constantly scoping out the surf and could jump in at a moments notice-the view was amazing(minus the palm tree obscuring the break a bit). As far as the actual unit goes, my second favorite part was the deck. Nothing like chilling on the deck, watching the surf while drinking a Medalla. Our unit had three bedrooms and two full baths as well as a full kitchen, den and dining room. The kitchen was great with plenty of cookware to make bfast and lunch etc. I stayed in one of the back bedrooms on a uncomfortable bed. I think this place could use all new beds. Again, not really a concern for us as our mission was surf.

All in all a great trip at a fantastic location. 10 mins to airport. Quick easy flights from NY. If higher end is what u want, stay at Villa Montana down the street-but not sure if that place is worth the cost.

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights because we saw good reviews and photos but was very small and difficult t find you really need to have a car to get there and go out to eat or to the supermarket because is nothing near by, the beach is not the best be careful there is a undertow and no one say anything to us we almost drowned but if you like surfing that's the place to be.

First off, if you're looking for a luxury resort you may want to consider another location. If you want a great price for a comfortable and clean apartment on a FABULOUS beach then try Villa Tropical. The staff is very friendly and the apartment (1B) was very cozy. The best part for us was being just steps from Shacks Beach. Most days of our weeklong stay we had the beach practically to ourselves. Villa Tropicals close proximity to Ola Lolas Garden Bar & Villa Montaña make it easy to get drinks or dinner within walking distance. If you want to stay in and make your own food the furnished apartments and really nice grill on the deck make it easy to get dinner done. We would definitely like to come back to this corner of Puerto Rico and would certainly stay here again.

Room Tip: Our stay in 1B was great, but if you're looking for a larger and more luxurious unit then VT has...

I am just disappointed by all the tripadvisor reviews that tempted me to book this place. The apartment we stayed in was Villa Rivero R1.

Even though it had a hall kitchen and bedroom, the hall was more or less unusable. The sofas were horribly uncomfortable and really old and not really for lounging around, the fan speed could not be changed very much nor was there an airconditioner in the hall. The kitchen which is part of the hall, had huge roaches that made an occasional appearance.

The bedroom seemed quite fine with a nice kingsize bed but we didnt really have a pleasant nights sleep. After a two nights stay we seemed to have developed tiny bites on our legs and we've been itching all over. Not really a $140 experience.

Ofcourse like all the other reviewers mention, the view was amazing and you do have an unhindered view of the ocean. There is great to snorkeling to be had thanks to reef close to the shore and there were many surfers and bodyboarders enjoying the water as well. The deck in front of the apartment makes for very pleasant reading and relaxing.

Room Tip: The single room at Villa Tropical (Back Studio) should NOT be booked. The air conditioning is so lo...

Based on everyone's reviews I had very very high expectations. It's a great out of the way get away. It would be ideal for families all wanting to stay together but their own separate places. It's next to other vacation rentals and homes but exclusive. You feel like it's your own private get away place. The view from the deck was fabulous. Keep in mind these are apartments so no room service. There's no one providing you new towels. The office is not open 24hrs. Our water heater didn't work the first day so we took cold showers. But they fixed it the next day when someone was in the office. The furniture is dated. It would be nice to see an updated couch and bedroom furniture. The furnishing were sparce on the inside but nice out outdoor funiture including a nice weber grill. The mattress was a little saggy and the one pillow didn't have pillow cases. Overall, it was clean and safe. I'd go with family since you can cook there and be comfortable. I wouldn't go again as a romantic weekend.

Room Tip: Get an ocean view room. We were on a budget so we didn't. The best part is the view so take adva...

If you're a couple or family who wants to get away and really spend quality time together then this is the place for you. Rooms are comfortable and very clean, location on the coast is perfect for hanging out or activities (for beginners or advanced) such as snorkeling, surfing, paddle boarding, etc. You can rent snorkeling gear for the week for $20 at the office... Within walking distance is the Tropical Trail Rides which I would highly recommend, as well as Ola Lola's Garden Bar (fantastic atmosphere). We picked up our own breakfast and lunch food on the way in. What we liked was that it is NOT a resort with all of the things (good and bad) that come with it. It was what life would be like if you owned your own little place on the beach in Puerto Rico... and we definitely felt at home. Can't wait to go back next year! Thanks Trevor... you're a riot....
