My family and I decided to do something totally different for the holidays and after searching the internet for accommodation options here in Nova Scotia we decided to book a cottage on Cape Sable Island.
There website was most appealing and after a bit of consideration we went ahead and booked. We had a great time and were very pleased with our choice. Upon arrival at Cape Sable we were quite taken by the rustic beauty that surrounded us. The cottage was immaculately clean, and as promised, was fully decorated for the Christmas season, indoor tree, wreaths, decorations etc....
The hosts had left a pitcher of homemade apple cidar and a Christmas card greeting on the kitchen table which we felt was a nice touch and the warm cidar was appreciated after a cold day of travel, delicious !!
The hostess came some time later that first day with a welcome Christmas basket with lots of goodies, we felt that was a very nice gesture. The cottage we chose was" The Sable Bay", a nautical themed cottage, and that it was, right down to the finest detail. I loved all the books available there in the cottage, shipwrecks, local history and folklore, maritime weather patterns etc.. It complimented the theme very nicely I thought and I enjoyed reading them and certainly learned a lot.
My favorite, which was brought to us personally from the main house by PJ the owner, was "Down in Nova Scotia " which I read cover to cover and when we headed out to explore it made it so much more interesting to know the facts and history of each place of interest nearby. PJ of course, like any proud local, gave us hints of places to visit, some off the actual beaten path and this certainly enhanced our experience.
We were blessed with good weather for December in Nova Scotia so we went for hours everyday exploring and sightseeing.
I highly recommend these area's "
Clark's Harbour and Clark's Harbour Wharf
The Stone Church made from local beach rock, very interesting !
The Hawk Beach, awesome place, huge expanse of sand and a nice trail that takes you by the "Sunken Forest" and to the Cape Sable Lighthouse which at 101 feet is the tallest in the province.
I made many trips to "The Hawk" it was really impressive to say the least.
The Pubnico's Windmill Generating System
Port LaTour and Baccaro.
South Side Beach
Arclelaus Museum, Centreville
Westhead, Stoney Island and Clam Point.
The cottage itself "
2 bedroom, 1 bedroom with a queen bed, very comfortable, nice antique furniture, a patio door to access the outdoor wrap around deck.
The other bedroom had 2 twin beds, mattress not so comfortable for my liking, nice furniture and another patio door which allowed you to access the rear of the cottage.
Bathroom was very well equipted with lots of VERY HOT water.
The kitchen had everything we could have possibly wanted, coffee maker with coffee and filters, microwave, stove, fridge, dishwasher, pots and pans and even a roaster to cook our Christmas turkey. Everything appeared fairly new and was in good working order. The livingroom was very nicely decorated, natuical all the way with a big bay window with excellent views of the bay directly outside and only feet away, loved it.
The deck we did not use much as it was winter, but it would be great in warm weather for relaxing and watching the water and sunrise's and sunsets which were spectacular !!
I'm an early bird so I didn't miss a one ..
When going to these type of cottages in my area, privacy is a big deal to me so I was very happy to see the way the cottages were designed, one in back, one in front, and so on which maximized the privacy for each cottage occupant. I do not care to be adjoined or on top of one another which I'm afraid many of the cottage setups can be here and elsewhere in the Maritimes.
Would I go again (?) for sure I would. I can't wait to go back when the temps rise to enjoy the beautiful beaches that surround this island, pure white sand and basically deserted.
Barrington Passage, the community before the causeway to Cape Sable Island has everything one would need, banks, major grocery chains, gas stations, fast food etc and then it's only a few short miles to Cape Sable Cottages
We were more than satisfied and enjoyed ourselves very much.
