“Gorgeous home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2013

Ranked number one place to stay in Natchez but we chose a hotel closer to the Visitor's center. Was glad we stopped by. Very nice home and grounds even for a quick stop to see it. Close to Melrose and local eateries and downtown Natchez.

Room Tip: Just drove by on the way to see Melrose. Gorgeous grounds and friendly staff.

Its a bit of a sleepy backwater, but if you're into the fantasy of being an ante-bellum plantation-owner surrounded by fancy china and white glove servants providing for your every whim, then this is the place for you. Totally over the top. The bed was bigger than my whole apartment.

We were on a driving holiday from New Orleans to Savannah and decided to spend 2 days at Monmouth. Having stayed all over the world at many of the best resorts and hotels, this is definitely high up there for us.

We stayed in the old mansion in one of the old but very beautiful and comfortable antebullum rooms. Full of character and history. I normally prefer state of the art new hotels like Westins but I really enjoyed the charm and character of our room in the main house.

We also loved the gardens and woods. Truely beautiful and we spent many hours just walking and sitting there in the cool of the day reading and relaxing.

They have a beautiful restaurant on site with lovely white table clothes, great wine and excellent food.

We really loved sitting in the beautiful courtyard around dusk with a glass of wine and enjoying the atmosphere.

Lastly the people are very friendly and helpful.

Only downside is Natchez is a very quiet town so there is not much to do there - so bring a good book and prepare to relax and unwind.

We stayed during labor day for four days. Loved the place and people.
Our room was the pond cottage 49.
Hal, Roosevelt, George, Shirley, and all others made our visit so special. I wish I could remember all names. We are going back for Christmas. Maybe I will get all names then.
Loved having coffee while rocking on the front porch. We could count on the ducks and cats for amusement. The raccoons strutted their stuff at night. I did get to see a dear also.
The food and service is outstanding.
Thank you all for a wonderful visit.

Rita and Dennis.

Room Tip: Pond cottage or Quitmans retreat.

We'd never stayed at a southern Inn-type property before and arrived here on our wedding anniversary. The staff were very welcoming and pleasant and we had a long briefing from the concierge on the property and it's facilities. We were allocated what appeared to be a hut in the grounds but it proved to be air-conditioned and fairly ok. No fridge and slightly suspect security given the surrounding area of downtown Natchez which is not overly affluent.
Were invited to the evening wine reception but were slightly surprised to receive a check for this - everywhere else we've been the reception is complimentary.
Forewent the overly formal dinner and opted for dinner in the courtyard, which was very pleasant.
Grounds are pretty and the owners were present and great in providing some perspective on restoration of the estate, which has to be hugely expensive to maintain.
Downtown Natchez has some great properties to visit as well as, for those suitably inclined, casinos along the river.

Room Tip: Stay in the main house if you can.

I have read some of the negative reviews, and I simply do not understand. My husband and I come here every May for our anniversary. I can not say enough wonderful things about this place. Breakfast is the best breakfast I have ever eaten. The french toast is out of this world! The staff is extremely attentive and the rooms are fantastic! Very spacious, and the beds are super comfortable. We have stayed in several different rooms, and they have all been unique and wonderful. Take it from somebody who has stayed multiple times....this is THE place to stay in Natchez!!!

The title says it all. The location of Monmouth is mostly an asset. Other hotels might be closer but it's unlikely you'll come to Natchez without a car; it only takes a few minutes to get anywhere downtown and parking was not a problem. Monmouth is so quiet and peaceful and the beautiful grounds lend themselves to quiet walks. OK, we were there at a quiet time so getting downtown/parking during a busier time might take some planning. If it's during the festival and all you plan to do in your room is sleep, then perhaps somewhere closer to downtown might be advisable. But if you plan to enjoy your room, your meals, the hospitality, then Monmouth is definitely worth some extra effort.

Meals at the restaurant were excellent. Except for the gumbo (that was a bit bland to our taste), everything else was superb! And if you've never eaten fried french toast with cream cheese filling... a little crispy, a little sweet, and so very good!

Thanks, Monmouth, for a great visit :-)
