“Very nice, with a couple of caveats”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2013

While traveling with our Cocker Spaniel, Pearl, we stayed two nights at Devereaux Shields. As specified in our email confirmation, I called on the afternoon of our arrival to inform the host, Eleanor, that we would be arriving after the 6:00 p.m. check-in deadline, lest we be assessed a "late check-in fee". We arrived at 7:45 p.m., and I was greeted by Eleanor, who provided us with two recommendations for dinner, calling both restaurants on our behalf. She then showed us our room, Elmo's, a short walk down the street in Aunt Clara's Cottage and offered us a glass of wine which enjoyed on the front porch. Very nice touch. The king bed in Elmo's was quite comfortable.

Eleanor had told us that breakfast would be served at 8:30 a.m. only - a lack of flexibility which, as seasoned travelers having spent a good many nights at other B&Bs, we had never encountered. The breakfast itself was fine.

On the second evening of our stay, we enjoyed another glass of wine with Eleanor's husband, Ron, this time in the small private courtyard behind the cottage. Again, very nice touch.

When we returned from dinner, we discovered that the narrow driveway, which is the only parking provided for the cottage, was full with three cars in a line. We had to park on the street which made us a bit uncomfortable. The silver lining was that those actually parked in the driveway found it necessary to jockey for position to leave the next morning. We packed up our stuff on the street.

All in all, Devereaux Shields represents a very good value, and for us the pet-friendliness was a big plus.

Room Tip: Pet owners are required to stay in Aunt Clara's Cottage. On the plus side, Aunt Clara's is...

Since my wife's family is from Natchez, we have visited here many times. This was the first time that we had stayed at a B&B. We chose the Devereaux Shields House due to the many fine reviews on TripAdvisor. We couldn't have been happier with our choice. We stayed at Aunt Clara's Cottage which is a few doors down and on the other side of the street from the main house. We were in the Alice Room, which had two double beds; one with a canopy. The beds were very comfortable and had the softest sheets. The house itself was in great condition and beautifully decorated. The hosts Ron and Eleanor were very pleasant and most helpful. The two breakfasts we had were quite tasty and the whole experience was very enjoyable. In part due to the other guests we met at breakfast and in the evening after we returned to the house. Rather than going back to our rooms, we sat on the porch with two other couples and talked and laughed for a couple hours. The environment was very compatible to having a good time. Aunt Clara's Cottage was just a wonderful place to stay while visiting Natchez. We will be back.

After our long bike ride of 440 miles from Franklin, TN to Natchez, the Deveraux Shields house was such a welcome site. We felt pampered to the very max. The bed was a beautiful high bed that I had to use a stool to get up on. But I felt like the princess and the pea on it. Our Inn Keepers were so accommodating and helpful. Got us to our rental car. Allowed us to keep our bikes in their garage. Had the most wonderful breakfasts. I was THRILLED to get to stay there for two nights. Would definitely go back again and again. Lovely stay

Room Tip: Our bathroom was a tad bit cool but they provided a heater. It's next to the wall that does not...

We actually stayed in Aunt Clara's Cottage just down the street from Devereaux Shields but owned by Nancy and Ron. Aunt Clara's was very charming. The room was large and very clean and had a very nice bathroom. Nancy and Ron were very charming and hospitable and the breakfasts were wonderful. We were a little concerned at first because we had to go through what appeared to be a bad part of town but once we got to the location we were very pleased. We would actually stay there again.

Room Tip: All of the rooms we saw looked very nice

Dear “Pilgrimage to Natchez” Guests,

We appreciate your kind comments regarding our beautiful B&B, luxury amenities and the fine southern hospitality that we strive to provide our Natchez guests. We do wish to help educate you further on your characterization of Natchez and perhaps better appreciate our city. The current structure of Natchez housing is an outgrowth of its historical beginnings and subsequent development. Our many large antebellum homes, the most surviving the Civil War within the U.S., were originally constructed upon very large plots of land. Small homes were initially constructed near the antebellum homes to support working staff, which planted the seeds for both whites and blacks to live together. You did explain that some countries such as South Africa may have different practices. As Natchez developed, additional homes were subsequently built as smaller pieces of land were sold off throughout the city as times became harder due to post-Civil War events, Depression and decline in the strength of the region’s cotton industry. Our beautiful city of today enjoys a rich history that benefits from contributions of many cultures, including the Natchez Indians, French, British, Spanish and finally our early Americans. We will be celebrating these many contributions in our tri-centennial in 2017 as the first settlement on the Mississippi River with many plans in the works. We look forward to helping you to enjoy your return stays and appreciate our Natchez heritage.

Everything you would expect from a top class B&B in a historic house - stayed in Victoria room at Aunt Clara's cottage which was delightfully furnished. From the welcoming drink when we arrived, to the tour of Ron's model railway before we left, the whole experience was exceptional.

Breakfast was a high spot, as others have noted and a special mention must go to the staff, who were helpful, friendly and efficient.

Natchez is a charming place, Ron and Eleanor are the perfect hosts and they will ensure you get the best out of your stay.

Our family of 4 was so happy to find accomodations in Natchez at a Bed and Breakfast that allowed us to stay together in one room. Our girls aged 13 and 9 loved the antiques and the 4-poster canopy bed in Aunt Clara's Cottage which is just down the street from the main house. Our hosts were so nice and helpful and the breakfast was just delicious. There were other people in the cottage but it was quiet unless you wished to go out and visit in the common room. We hope to go back again one day.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Alice Room. It has one queen bed and one double.

We found Devereaux Shields on the internet and wasn't sure what to expect. Although the pictures were beautiful they didn't do justice to the charm and beauty of Devereaux Shields. As we drove up to the house, there were candles glowing in all the windows to welcome us. The grounds were emaculate with beautiful landscaping and the peaceful sounds of waterfalls and fountains. As we entered the house the charm and beauty of the south surrounded you everywhere....The level of excellence was evident in every room as even the smallest details were tended to from the cleanliness of the rooms to the aroma of fresh brewed morning coffee on the table outside our room awaiting us each morning. We stayed in the Rose suite and it was absolutely wonderful. The rooms were spacious, the beds were comfortable and the southern decor was charming. Ron and Eleanor were wonderful hosts. The breakfast was excellent and beyond what we expected. Eleanor's recipes were fabulous. We enjoyed the whole experience.
