I visit Longwood each time I'm in Natchez (generally twice each year). The mansion was nearing completion when the Civil War began. Northern workers headed home, leaving the home frozen in time. The family moved in to the completed basement level and lived there for several generations. Longwood was intended to be a unique mansion and it is, both in design and in its still unfinished state. I highly recommend that anyone interested in southern architecture and the Civil War tour the home.
