“Not your average stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2013

You need to think a little differently to stay here. You are not looking for the chips in the paint of marks on the walls when there are historic civil war bullet holes to be found and the original paintwork is being preserved. Sure if you want that kind of 'glossed over' version of this type of stay then you can find that and pay significantly more for it, but on a budget this is a great stay amongst the faded grandeur of a once very fine home and all the history that goes with it.

As has been said in reviews before, your host is amazing and will show you round her ancestral home and I suggest you have that tour as soon as you arrive so you appreciate why the room and the house are not up to the perfect 'Hilton standards' and some areas do have a bit of a musty smell if you have a sensitive nose, but then everything in them is antique - except the bed linen which, of course, was modern.

Where this stay really scores is in the quietness of the out of town location, no annoying ice machines or elevators near your room and just the sound of the (occasional) local animals and bugs like the cicadas outside; tranquil to a tee.

Be different and give this one a go, we did and it made a good break from the usual Quality/Hilton/Holiday/Drury/Staybridge etc etc.

Thank you for your kind words for Glenfield Plantation. We strive to have our guest enjoy their experience here while staying with us. Yes, a guest has to appreciate a true bed and breakfast. You must truly appreciate history and the authenticity of an antebellum home, it's historical features, and the tranquility of being in the country - yet only 1 mile from downtown. Thank you for the opportunity to host your stay while visiting the United States.

Why would you stay ANYWHERE else in Natchez when you could spend the night in an antebellum plantation, fall asleep in a 4-poster bed to the sound of whirring cicadas, and have breakfast with the most charming hotel owner this side of the Mississippi? One night here was like Fried Green Tomatoes meets Steel Magnolias meets Gone With the Wind. Trust me on this one.

It was unfortunate we only planned 1 night in Natchez:-( this was such a nice place to stay. My wife and I felt welcomed by Marjorie, the owner, who treated us with kindness, teached and advised us some southeren history lessons and touristic tips. She mades us a nice breakfast in the morning. The house was in old style, decorated with original antique, spacious and clean with a massive porch and garden. My wife and I will advise to stay there it is worth it!

The charm and sincerity of the owner alone is worth the stay! I had never stayed in a home or bed and breakfast, but with my husband being the history buff he is, we decided on Glenfield while staying over in Natchez, Mississippi. Everything was perfect, and the tour of the home is detailed in rich history. Our room was comfortable, clean, and quiet. The breakfast was served on the sun porch. Plated hot items including meat and eggs, coffee, juices, etc, were served that were very tasty and home cooked. This is a true Bed and Breakfast experience and one I very much enjoyed.

While conducting research for a notable book project as a companion to one of Discovery's hit TV shows based in Baton Rouge, I had to zip up to Natchez for the weekend to follow the book's primary subject. My lit agents -- based in Los Angeles -- were adamant about where I should stay...

"If you want the true and proper Natchez experience, lie, cheat and steal (or beg!) to get a room at the Glenfield Plantation." Apparently, this B & B's reputation precedes itself all the way to Southern California. So I made the call and, as luck would have it, they had one room available.

Let me sum up my experience there in one word: AMAZING!

Charming, elegant, comfortable... The vibe and visuals are all that you'd hope for and more when seeking a place to stay with history. But unlike so many others, Glenfield's decor and overall "feel" has not been molested or modernized in any way beyond some of the basic comforts (wi-fi, SAT TV) travelers have come to expect. And if it's a period destination you're seeking, the antiques throughout will transport you back a few hundred years just as well as a time machine.

However, don't confuse old with uncomfortable. There was nothing dusty, musty or unclean about my room and private bath. The words I'd choose: large, inviting, homey.

But the piece de resistance... Marjorie, Glenfield's owner and hostess. A doll of a woman, she embodies Southern charm and class. To top it off, she's also one heck of a tour guide.

After my homemade breakfast, Marjorie took me around and explained Glenfield's history, everything from the un-fixed bullet hole to the secret of the colored doorknobs to the, wait for it, ghost (or possibly ghosts) that some say occupy the property.

Sunday rolled around way too quickly for my liking. Rest assured, I'll be back.

So next time you're in Natchez, whether it's one night or a week, do yourself a favor... Book a stay at the Glenfield Plantation. You're missing out if you stay anywhere else.

Room Tip: Any room is a good room!
