“Great hotel, but a little noisy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2013

Spent 5 nights in March. Very nice hotel room. One of best hotel buffet's I've had - felt like I was on an upscale cruise ship. Had cooks to grill meats (usually 4 choices of raw meats) at dinner - in addition to other dishes made back in kitchen - beware the Spanish apparently like meat cooked on rarer side (even the poultry) - so if you like no pink - you will need to indicate this to them. Usually also had a cook on crepes or waffles at desert station. Great salad bar. Breakfast equally impressive (although only 1 cooking station) rest made back in kitchen. Plenty of good food, you won't go hungry. Nice set up with ski lockers keyed to your room on lower level. Parking was fairly expensive 24 Euros/day. Room had large safe and heated floors - both main room & bathroom. They even had bottles of skin lotion which seems rare for European hotels. Small gym open 24 hours with 2 bicycles, a treadmill, an elliptical and several weight machines. The resort is one one end of the ski village - you can easily walk to lifts in 5-10 minutes. Only problem for me was walls, floors and door were all pretty thin. I often can hear TVs next door and scraping of chairs on hard floors from above, but at this hotel could not only here corridor noise really loudly, but even heard kids crying and having temper tantrums that were several rooms down across the hall (from multiple different rooms - this place seems popular with families) through closed doors (both mine & theirs). I was forced to wear earplugs every night which I don't like to do since I might miss my alarm in morning.

To start with, there seemed to be some problems with our reservation which were ironed out quite quickly by the friendly staff. The hotel has some fantastic amenities and we are going to head back to use the spa as we did not get the time to use this. The only complaint is the uncomfortable beds which meant none of us got a good nights sleep to prepare for skiing. Everyone is very friendly and the service is second to none.

As other reviewers point out, the location is very good. The public areas of the hotel are wonderful, the buffet meals are expensive but very good as is the spa.
We got a special deal for mid week in a standard room which made the accommodation good value. However, the standard rooms are very dated. Decor in itself is not a problem but the floors are tiled and therefore cold to walk on and make the rooms very noisy. The walls are thin and you can hear the guests next door and above you. If the hotel is full this could be a great problem. Although ski boots are not allowed in the rooms it sounded like the guests above us had disregarded this rule. No gowns or face cloths are supplied and there is no choice of pillows for standard rooms. If you like a particular type of pillow (eg. Feather) bring your own.
For non-skiers the town offers little so take lots else to do. There is free wi-if all over the hotel so an iPad is a great companion. The heating is turned off during the day in the rooms so if there is no sunshine then they get cold. The lounge is lovely and warm though.
If we were to return I would take the advice of another reviewer and upgrade to a premium room hopefully they are quieter.

The first great point is that the hotel is very easy to arrive to: no need to go all the way around the resort to get to the entrance, like for the rest of hotels, which is a true advantage.
The hotel as a whole is clean, modern and its situation just a minute away from the central plaza is perfect!
We booked half board and we have to admit both breakfast and dinner buffet are very good quality. A wide variety of food that can suit all need and diets (I personally tasted almost every bits, putting on a few kilos in the effort!), a waiting staff surprisingly nice and welcoming as well as good professionals.
The hotel offers a spa that really deserves to be tested! Huge pool areas, with Jacuzzi and water jets of all sorts and a great sauna and hot bath circuit. We were quite surprised at first to be obliged to pay for the experience; the service could be free in a hotel of such level (and price!). However, a 2 hours stay is THE perfect end for an exhausting day of snowboarding and did put us in a very good mood for the rest of the stay. So I highly recommend!
The only drawback that we experienced, if to mention one, is the big difference of level that exists between the standard rooms and the premiums!! The standards (one of which we stayed in) being slightly…. old fashioned compare to the premiums. The difference being so great that we shall not hesitate next time and pay the (not so big) difference and get a premium room.
Globally a great place to stay in Sierra Nevada, a bit expensive but worth it.

Room Tip: Premium at least

This is the 2nd time I've stayed in this hotel in 2 years. Both times have been for a lads ski holiday.
The rooms are clean and well appointed but dated. I wouldn't want to spend a lot of time in them. There no English channels to speak of but the web site says there are.
The spa is fantastic but over priced, €30 to have a swim.
It's perfect for a ski holiday as it is less than 5 minutes the main gondola and if you do go there to ski, Pepés Cafè at the bottom of the Aquila run is an excellent place to regroup. Next door is Pepés sons' ski hire shop which is perfect to leave your ski kit in after skiing and start the après.

This was a return trip for us after a fantastic family ski trip last year. We booked two family rooms together and a Double room separately, or so I thought! Turns out there are two Melia hotels in the resort, the other one just over the road which is older. The receptionist in Sol y Nieve was fantastic in getting our double transferred from the other hotel at no additional cost.
I can't speak highly enough of the management & staff who are all charming and helpful.
The family rooms were huge one having two separate sleeping area's. but each had only one tiny window and not much of a view. Our rooms last year were a bit smaller but better windows. The rooms were too hot until we turned off all the heating and just kept the towel rail going in the bathroom.
The buffet style food on half board is excellent, multiple choices of meat chicken and fish cooked as you wait, plus pasta's paella etc.,and excellent deserts. Although we found that with our children it may have been better to take breakfast only and feed them early doors at the very good pizza & pasta restaurant opposite.
the hotel bar and gym facilities are as good as you would expect in a 5 star hotel, but we felt the charges for adults to use the Spa or pool were pricey. That said, kids can use part of the area free if accompanied by an adult, so if you have kids you don't pay!
The location is approx 150 m to the two main cabin lifts and the main ski area and facilities are superb, particularly for beginners with a covered travellator taking them up the large nursery slope, and a number of easy green runs. There are very few black runs, we skied some great reds and cruisey blues including one down to the resort that has a champagne bar 2/3rds of the way down that is very welcoming. We used the British Ski School for the kids and I would recommend them and the ski hire at the same location.
Our weather last week was not very good apart from one day, last year at the same time it was sunny but cold every day to make fantastic skiing conditions.
This hotel was recommended to me by friends who live in Spain and use it regularly, as being for anyone who does not mind paying a little bit more for excellent quality.

Room Tip: 514 if you have a large family
