We live in San Francisco and hadn't really considered staying somewhere so close to home, figuring it wouldn't feel like a real getaway to go somewhere only twenty minutes from our house. Wow, were we wrong! From the minute we drove up the hills through Mill Valley and reached the top of the road leading to the Mountain Home Inn, we couldn't have felt further away from everyday life.

The inn is incredibly striking as you drive up to the parking area yet looks deceptively small. Because it's built atop the hillside, the rooms are hidden from street view and hug the slope of the mountain facing San Francisco Bay and the lush, deep green vistas of Mt. Tam.

Once inside the rustic yet stylish lobby/gathering area, we found a beautiful bar, comfortable banquettes and tables for lounging around with a drink, and views so distracting it was hard to know which way to look. The inn also provides a huge selection of current, varied magazines and newspapers for guests to thumb through or take back to your room, as well as complimentary Peet's coffee in the afternoon as well as in the mornings.

The inn obviously has a gem of a chef and cooking staff judging by the pitch perfect breakfast included in the price of your stay. Peet's coffee, individual teapots of traditional teas or herbal tisanes and freshly squeezed orange juice are lovely touches, although the breakfast choices themselves steal most of the attention. With a huge selection to choose from, we managed to decide upon a wonderfully creative and flawlessly executed ham and onion hash on a bed of sinfully rich grits served with sourdough toast and preserves, as well as a top notch french toast strewn with ripe strawberries and maple syrup.

After a meal like this, a hike was definitely in order as our friendly and professional waitress advised, and the staff was prepared for all levels of requests for directions, including maps and explanations of which paths were for easy walks and which were more strenuous. Sam at the front desk couldn't have been nicer or more helpful, and Justin, the manager, has a lovely, easy charm and an attentive, calm manner. You know you are in great hands with the pros running the Mountain Home Inn.

Our room was Number 5, which I highly recommend. Not only is it spacious and cozy at the same time, but the views from the room as well as from the long wooden deck outside (with a table and chairs for reading, drinking coffee or just pondering the beauty of the forests and silvery bay) are beyond description. You really need to see for yourself to understand how easy it would be to lose yourself here and never want to go home.

Our room had an extremely comfortable king-size bed, extra pillows and robes in the closet, and a perfectly stacked bunch of logs for a fire that needed no more than a match to begin blazing and crackling instantly. All night we laid in bed with the doors to the deck open to the crisp air, only tearing ourselves away from our books and the warmth of the bed to throw another log or two on the fire. The inn bills itself as "tv free," and for those of you who read that and wonder if you might be bored or miss your favorite shows, I can say that television will be the last thing on your mind as you listen to the snap of the logs in the fireplace or wonder what kind of bird it might have been that you just heard outside your window.

I can't understand why this fabulous place is not more well known among locals. It has it all: unparalled views; utter solitude and quiet; fantastic food; and beautiful and comfortable design. We returned to San Francisco determined to spread the word among our friends and to return again as soon as possible. The only negative to the Mountain Home Inn is knowing it is so close to home and not making time to get back there again as soon as you can.

We booked the romance package for my husband's birthday and the manager gaciously accepted our request for an extra half hour massage for my husband in exchange for the roses included in the package. Well, it all went downhill from there.
1. Even thought the room included with the package was listed as one of the best rooms ($325/nite), the room was in dire need of maintenance (peeling wallpaper, cobwebs on every corner, dirty carpet, smelly pillows and comforter, thick layer of dust and cobwebs on heater vent, dilapidated doors to deck, extremely weather beatened deck furniture; spraying water on faucet (no washer), the list goes on and on..........

2. The masseuse was inexperienced and lacked the skills to give a good thorough deep tissue massage.

3. The dinner was good but was delivered cold and we were never given the wine pairing that was supposedly included with dinner. The worst offense was smelling the dirty damp carpet during the entire dinner.

4. Breakfast came with one piece of toasted sourdough bread with a greasy omelette. After a second request, we were given some grapes and strawberries.

All in all, the inn itself is beautiful with close proximity to a lot of fun outdoor activities (hiking, biking, etc.) and the chocolate cake for dessert was excellent, but I doubt that I will stay there again nor recommend it to any of my friends.

I was worried when I read the previous reviews here. But we came to stay at Mt. Home Inn with out of town guests this past weekend.

Our rooms were lovely and cozy, with FANTASTIC bedding including the best pillows ever (including a body pillow, which is a huge treat for me). Rustic but very comfortable. We enjoyed a WONDERFUL breakfast out on the deck which was delicious and huge! The service was excellent, it was all very comfortable and nice. We would absolutely go back.

Update to my review for the Mountain Home Inn in Mill Valley, California - The manager, Justin Flake, contacted me after reading this review and offered my money back and a free return visit. He seemed genuinely interested in my opinion about how the inn could improve.

Original review:

Where to start? We found the inn when we did a search for "romantic bed and breakfasts" when we planned a getaway for our 25th anniversary. We booked one of their "superior" rooms for well over $300/night (including the tax). Here's what went wrong:

1. The in-room CD player mentioned on their web page was just a bedside radio with CD which played very poorly, so we couldn't enjoy the romantic music we'd brought(in our first room; more on that later).

2. My husband had specifically asked if the jacuzzi tub in our room was large enough for two, and was told it was. Guess what? It was a one-person jacuzzi.

3. Because of the location of the faucets, the only way to fill the tub was to stand inside the tub. The valves that changed the water flow from tub to shower didn't work well - there were frequent drips. The configuration of the tubs/showers was very poorly planned.

4. We noticed a leak from the base of our toilet to a puddle in the middle of the bathroom floor. Yup, water was leaking out from under the toilet. The next morning we asked to change rooms, and were moved to a room without a leaky toilet but with similar shower issues. Upon checkout, we asked if consideration could be given for this very unpleasant experience, and we were given a 20% break on the second night's lodging.

5. We'd been shown a sitting room for guests' use where tea and hot cider were available. Imagine our surprise when the area held a business seminar all day on the Saturday we were there, not only preventing us from enjoying the space, but also dominating the sound environment of the entire inn. Beverages were not available in the room for 24 hours.

6. The food was OK. Breakfasts were a bit on the skimpy side. For instance, the "seasonal fruit" on two of our breakfasts was half a banana.

7. The staff was not warm and friendly, as one expects at a bed and breakfast. We didn't feel well cared for or pampered.

Despite the price, these are NOT luxurious accommodations. The location is breathtaking; the inn is not. We certainly didn't arrive in a frame of mind to find fault with Mountain Home Inn. We couldn't help it; there was fault to be found every time we turned around.

Management response from Justin Flake, General Manager
(Management representative)
Apr 20, 2006
I was completely disheartened to read this negative review. Not only by the fault that was perceived in us, but by the fact that our guest did not have an enjoyable stay. However, I feel that some of the comments were overly severe and incorrect. I find it necessary to respond, lest our potential guests are swayed from the opportunity of enjoying a stay at our inn.

It is true, that the toilet in the Redwoods Room, appeared to be leaking from it's base. If there was a way to foresee that such a thing might happen, we would have never booked this particular room. Our guest initially assumed and posted online, that “sewage was leaking from the toilet.” This was not the case. Water dripped from a radiant heater in the corner of the bathroom, overnight. Its path was obstructed by the ceramic base of the toilet, which gave an appearance of water leaking from the toilet. Whether a toilet leak, or not, I can understand why our guest was upset. We acted without hesitation. A new toilet was purchased and installed immediately. Later, the true cause of the problem was discovered and fixed as well.

The price of the room refered to, “well over three hundred dollars,” books for $295.00 plus 11% use and occupancy tax. The total cost is $327.45.

We hand comment cards to all of our guests upon departure. Breakfast is very highly rated. Out of “excellent,” “good,” “fair,” and “poor,” excellent is checked over 90% of the time.

I do agree with the review on a few accounts:

We offer refreshments in our Bay View lounge, from 7:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. The lounge was in use. Coffee and tea were offered in the restaurant, instead, and were available during the same hours. Occasionally, we book events on weekends in the lounge. Guests should be notified when events will be taking place. This will happen from this point forward. All guests will be notified if an event is taking place.

Jacuzzi bath tubs are deeper and a bit longer than a standard tub, but they are not step-in hot tubs. They are stated as “Jacuzzi bathtubs,” on our website. Two can fit tightly, and many use them this way, but the tub should not be called a two-person tub. Our staff has been advised of this.

The C.D./alarm clocks we use are high-quality. Our website simply called them C.D. players. Never did we intend to mislead anybody. We now refer to them as C.D./alarm clocks.

Some of the showers do drip, when transitioning from shower to tub. Since this, we have identified these showers and have begun to fix them. However, never have any of them dripped on a regular basis, when turned off.

The most difficult part of this review for me was the comment about our customer service. Couples have been staying with us for Anniversaries and Birthdays for years. We go out of our way to make the stay a special one, including putting complimentary bottles of champagne in the room. That she felt our staff was not “warm and friendly,” and did not feel cared for or pampered,” is very disappointing. A meeting of our entire staff was held to address these issues, and training has been instituted to prevent their happening again.

Thank you for reading, and I hope you'll join us.

I stayed here in December for my B-Day and had a great meal, great service and an amazing sleep. I stayed in room #6 with a jacuzzi, fireplace and king bed. Soo comfortable especially going to sleep after a big tub (me AND my partner) with a fire roaring!
Lots of updates since my last stay 3 years ago. Much better.. loved the hike.
