“Excellent food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2013 via mobile

We , my partner and I, booked a Tuesday evening. From an excellent menu we choose the cod and chips which were excellent followed by coffee on the outdoor patio overlooking the river Wye , on an idyllic summer evening it doesn't get much better

A warm welcome to the River Café after a day spent Kayaking in the local area. My room was clean and comfortable over looking the river. A delicious Full English Breakfast with excellent coffee was served by the friendly staff in the morning.

Room Tip: A room overlooking the river.

This place is find. A diamond. The best place I have stayed in a long, long time. We booked based on a Times review which rated it as one of the best places to eat al fresco. We also wanted to go kayaking, which is available from next door. A perfect weekend.
The location is beautiful; right on the river bank in one the most tranquil locations in the U.K The ‘café’ is very nicely decorated leading to a tiered outside area that overlooks the river, lit up with fairy lights, lined with wooden tables which come with cushions and warm snuggly blankets so you can make the most of this magical setting they have enhanced.
The rooms are basic but wonderfully done; comfy beds, good sheets, good bathrooms, lots of hot water and perfectly clean.
The restaurant is excellent; the breakfasts are very good quality and such generous portions that you will not need anything else until afternoon tea – even when kayaking 11 miles! Freshly squeezed orange juice, home-made granola and a bottle of local (delicious) apple juice all to yourself. Proper coffee. Dinner was equally good; a scallop and chorizo salad followed by the most tender and tasty rib eye I have had for a long time, was well deserved after a day on the river. The wine is reasonably priced so you can afford that second bottle! The muffins are out of this world – we nearly turned around to get more on our drive home.
What makes this place ‘the best’ though is the service. It is the small touches; the complimentary drink on arrival, the bottle of juice with your name on it at breakfast. Nothing is too much to ask for. The staff are so friendly, it felt like staying with friends for the weekend.
I cannot fault this place AT ALL, which for me is a first. We have done the award winning restaurants and 5 start hotels many times before - this has proved, who needs all that stuff? Excellence is right here. Such good value, such a good place, I woudln't change a thing. I felt so content, happy and at peace there I really was very sad to leave. We are already looking for weekends to book again. As I said, a true diamond.

I stayed here on Saturday 31st of August. The room was spotlessly clean and decorated to a good standard.
The food was excellent, I had an evening meal, (Scallops and chorizo to start, followed by Fish and Chips with Lemon tart for dessert).
Breakfast the next morning was delicious (Full English/Welsh consisted of Bacon, Scrambled Eggs Black Pudding, Mushrooms, Vine Tomatoes and Toast). All the ingredients were fresh and where possible, locally sourced.
I read reviews on TripAdvisor for the River Cafe before I stayed and a few reviews were complaining about the service. My experience was service of the highest quality and attention to detail. All of the staff couldn't do enough to make me feel welcome. Especially the two waiters both called Alex and a guy with a ponytail. Top marks from me for service!
I will definitely be returning here soon.

Ten of us visited the Wye Valley Canoe centre on Sunday 4 August and had a great time despite the pooring rain. We kicked off with an excellent coffee and bacon sarny in the River Cafe and returned there for an excellent lunch after the paddling. The owner is very friendly and helpful and food was delicious. Ten clean plates and amazing homemade puds, Its worth going just to visit the River Cafe.

Room Tip: We didnt stay over

Wonderful garden, food, service, river view, a must stop if you pass this way! Rooms look great, Alex looks after all, service as it should be. 5 star !!! Canoes on the river and looks like expansion within the existing buildings.

Stumbled on this cafe after about an hour of driving looking for a pub by the river. We had given up and were returning, a tad disgruntled, to Hereford when we saw the name and thought this must be by water. We stopped and spent the next hour in a childhood story. Children swimming in the river, cooling off in the boiling heat, Dads skimming stones with their children whilst we watched and drank a welcome glass of chilled white and cold beer in the terrace overlooking a shallow river. And the white chocolate and raspberry muffin! Sinfully warm and meltingly sweet. We shared one, then another. The staff were very friendly and also pointed out that had we driven a different route we would have found a pub by the river......We were glad we didn't as this spot was perfect.
